Students engage with art from many cultures and time periods during a visit to NOMA. Guided discussions about works of art encourage students to make observations, build connections, and think critically.

1. Select Guided or Self-Guided Visit

Guided Visits Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30, 10:00,10:30, 11:00 a.m.
Knowledgeable docents engage small groups in age-appropriate discussions. Tours are interactive, conversational, and are aligned with state and national educational standards for visual arts, language arts, science, and social studies. For the best tour experience, a maximum of 60 students per time slot can be scheduled. Available October 1, 2019 – May 29, 2020.

Self-Guided Visits Available during regular museum hours year-round.
Design and lead your own tour at NOMA. Visual art, language arts, history, science and math can be explored in NOMA’s extensive permanent collection, compelling temporary exhibitions, and outdoor Sculpture Garden. Explore the online Educator Toolbox to find information and lessons related to the collection. For an advantageous tour experience, please visit NOMA in advance of your class visit.

2. Select Your Tour Topic

Choose from our thoughtfully designed tours that approach selected works from visual art, language arts, science, or social studies perspectives, or visit a featured exhibition. With one month’s notice, you may request a customized tour to compliment your curriculum. See our tour topics listed below.

3. Make Your Reservation

Please arrange your visit at least two weeks in advance. E-mail grouptours@noma.org or call (504) 658-4128 to schedule your visit, or fill in the request at the bottom of this page and our staff will follow up with you to confirm the reservation.

Please have the following information ready:

• Group leader’s name
• Group leader’s cell phone number
• Group leader’s email address
• School’s name, address, and phone number
• Number of students / Number of chaperones
• Grade level of students
• Preferred date & time, alternate date & time
• Tour topic for Guided Visit or Self-Guided Visit

ADMISSION

FREE for scheduled school groups, including students, teachers, and one adult chaperone per 10 students. Two weeks notice is required for guided tours, 24 hours notice is required for self-guided groups.

UPON ARRIVAL

Buses can pull into the circle drive in front of NOMA to drop students off and pick them up. Parking is available along Lelong Drive.

Plan to arrive 5 – 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled tour in order to exit the bus, be greeted by a NOMA staff-member, and get into small groups for tours.

TOUR TOPICS

Visual Art Approach

Elements of Art Examine how artists utilize the building blocks of art-making — line, color, shape, form, texture, and space — to create a boundless visual language.

Methods & Materials Discuss how objects are made and what decisions artists make to express their ideas. Compare and contrast a variety of media such as paint, clay, glass, and photography.

Language Arts Approach

What’s the Story? Using clues from works of art, students imagine what might happen outside of the frame as they develop stories with characters, setting, and plot in NOMA’s galleries.

Describe it! Students develop observation skills and build descriptive language as they use synonyms and adjectives to describe works of art.

Social Studies Approach

History Detectives Sleuth through the ages exploring art objects from NOMA’s permanent collection. The history detectives will discover what it was like to live in a different era by exploring details in works of art.

My Country, My State The rich cultural heritage of Louisiana is highlighted as students consider how artists represent place and investigate objects from different eras of our nation’s history.

Scientific Approach

Art and Ecology Artists have explored environmental themes in their works throughout the centuries. Search NOMA’s galleries and discuss the relationship of  man to nature.

STEM + Art Explore how artists employ science, technology, engineering, and math to create works of art. How is creative thinking influenced by the sciences and vice versa?
