Gallery Talk: A Queen Within with artist Joanne Petit-Frére

Wed, February 21st, 2018 at 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Joanne Petit-Frére is among the designers represented in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes. She takes sculpture into new realms with her incredibly complex hair designs, which call upon influences as diverse as math, nature, engineering, chemistry, garment construction, Old World architecture, Africa, and the Americas. In 2017, her work was at the center of a media controversy after the architectural braided crown she created for singer Solange Knowles was airbrushed out of the Evening Standard magazine’s cover story. The publication apologized after the singer posted the image on social media and referenced her own song, “Don’t Touch My Hair.”
