Description

At New Orleans' Newcomb Pottery (part of Newcomb College, Tulane's coordinating women's school), men shaped and fired pottery, producing blank ceramic forms for female students to decorate. The Newcomb Pottery was a social experiment to teach young Southern women how to support themselves financially as artists, and the results are still celebrated works of art. Newcomb forms are traditional shapes, but the women's glazed designs capture both the artistic philosophies of the English Arts & Crafts movement and the unique flora of the Gulf South region.
