This Lynda Benglis brooch is one of the only extant examples of Benglis’ work in the medium of jewelry design. Made for New Orleans resident Jean Taylor in the 1980s or 1990s, the form mimics the triple knot of one of Benglis’ most iconic sculptural forms, one of which is currently in NOMA’s collection. Given Benglis’ interest in the body and feminism, this singular jewelry piece reveals much about how Benglis thought about her work in relationship to the human form, and the way her work responded to questions of femininity and the idea of the decorative—both of which were derisive terms in the art world of the 1970s and 1980s in which the ideas of minimalism and conceptual art held sway.
