Friday Nights at NOMA: Lecture with Leon A. Waters

This Friday night, Leon A. Waters will be giving a lecture on the Butler Greenwood Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. NOMA’s current exhibition A Louisiana Parlor: Antebellum Taste & Context celebrates the recent acquisition of the rococo revival parlor from the Butler Greenwood Plantation.
- 5-8 pm: Art on the Spot
- 5:30-8:30 pm: Music by Arpa Quartet
- 6-7 p.m.: Lecture with Leon A. Waters: “Transactions, Successions, Letters, etc. from the Butler Greenwood Plantation.”
- 6:30-7:30 pm: Artful Palate with Chef Chris Montero, Café NOMA and Napoleon House
About Leon A. Waters and “Transactions, Successions, Letters, etc from the Butler Greenwood Plantation”
Mr. Waters will focus on the business commerce of the Butler Greenwood Plantation and its political connection with the state machinery. Through the perusal of historical plantation documents, Mr. Waters will illuminate the revelations evidenced by the family’s records. The parlor of the Butler Greenwood Plantation was one of the ares of the main house where financial deliberations, agreements and arrangements were made.
Leon A. Waters is the Chairperson of Louisiana Museum of African American History and Manager of Hidden History LLC, a publishing, touring and research company. Mr. Waters is a native of New Orleans; he completed his studies in Business Administration at Xavier University. He is the publisher of On To New Orleans: Louisiana’s Heroic 1811 Slave Revolt. This 300 page book is the story of the largest slave revolt in the United States that happened here in St. John the Baptist Parish, St. Charles Parish, and Orleans Parish. He has been active for a long time in the struggle for complete liberation for the African American nation and the social emancipation of the working class. He is married to Aleta Cornin Waters. They have three children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
About Artful Palate
Café NOMA’s Artful Palate summer cooking series returns in 2015 with seven art-inspired cooking demonstrations led by Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group chefs. NOMA’s exhibition A Louisiana Parlor: Antebellum Taste & Context celebrates the acquisition of a superb rococo revival parlor from the Butler Greenwood Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. In honor of the exhibition, the Artful Palate demonstrations will feature Creole-inspired dishes and traditions. Chefs from Café NOMA, Ralph’s on the Park, Red Fish Grill, Brennan’s, Heritage Grill, Napoleon House and café b will lead the demonstrations, along with local guest chefs and purveyors as well. Artful Palate is free of charge and open on a first come, first served basis.
