ABOUT OPERA NOUVELLE AND CARMEN
In advance of a full-scale production of Carmen in October by the New Orleans Opera Association, singers from the company will visit NOMA to present selections from this famous opera by Georges Bizet. Carmen was first performed by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalized audiences. The opera is written in the genre of opéra comique with musical numbers separated by dialogue. It is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen.
Friday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. Worner Charitable Trust; New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation; and the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council.
