NOMA will screen Ruben Östlund’s  2017 Swedish satirical movie The Square, starring Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss, and Dominic West. The film centers around Christian, the prestigious curator of a Stockholm museum who finds himself in times of both professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit, “The Square.” The installation invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings, but as the movie’s storyline makes clear, it can be difficult to live up to your own ideals. Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum’s public relations agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square.” The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis. Movie critic Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times wrote: “The Square may be many things — a high-wire ensemble comedy, a vivid character study, a tirelessly sustained volley of ideas — but it is no one’s idea of sanctuary.” (Rated R | 2 hours, 31 minutes | Watch the trailer)
