His photographs and film installations have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. Bey’s work has been the subject of numerous solo museum exhibitions\, including Dawoud Bey: An American Project organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art (2020-2022)\, and Elegy at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2023-2024) and New Orleans Museum of Art (2025-2026); and Dawoud Bey: Street Portraits at the Denver Art Museum (2024-2025). He has been the subject of several monographs\, including Elegy (Aperture/VMFA\, 2023)\, which chronicles Bey’s history projects and landscape-based work. Bey is the recipient of numerous awards including five honorary doctorates\, and in 2024\, the artist was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  \nBey lives and works in Chicago and New York. She writes: “These were collage book albums\, ostensibly made as paper doll houses\, which featured double-page spreads representing different rooms in a house. The cover of a given album served as the front door\, the next pages represented the front hall\, and so on into the inner rooms of the home and garden. The furnishings of the rooms consisted of images cut out from trade catalogs\, newspapers and other visual material\, which was ubiquitous in the late 19th century. On display are vibrant monochromatic photographs of the color of water made under the surface paired with dramatic black-and-white landscape photographs made along the banks of the Mississippi and its tributaries—from Louisiana and across the country. Floc’h documented the entire span of the Mississippi during a 2022 Villa Albertine artist residency in the United States in collaboration with the Camargo Foundation and Artconnexion. Join curator Mel Buchanan for a discussion of the catalogue on Thursday\, October 17. \n\nAbout the Speakers\nZella Palmer\nZella Palmer is a professor\, food historian\, cook\, author\, and filmmaker. She serves as the Chair and Director of the Dillard University Ray Charles Program in African-American Material Culture in New Orleans\, Louisiana. In 2019\, under Palmer’s leadership\, Dillard University launched a Food Studies academic program. Palmer is also the author of Recipes and Remembrances of Fair Dillard: 1869–2019 (2019) and Ed Mitchell’s Barbeque (2023). \nAlex Sanchez\nAlex Sanchez is a New Orleans–based gas chromatography chemist in the Natural Resources Division of SGS North America. He has more than ten years of experience in an industrial laboratory setting and employs specialized instrumentation for analyses of organic samples for quality and purity determination. Sanchez holds a degree in chemistry from the University of New Orleans.  \n\nABOUT THE EXHIBITION AND CATALOGUE\nOn view through February 10\, Sand\, Ash\, Heat: Glass at the New Orleans Museum of Art explores how one material has inspired innovation in the arts and science from ancient civilizations to today. An accompanying 176-page catalogue—Glass: Sand\, Ash\, Heat—is published by Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers. DESCRIPTION:Join the New Orleans Museum of Art for a presentation on contemporary West African masquerade\, in advance of the upcoming exhibition New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\, opening at the museum in April 2025. \nThe program will include a panel presentation and discussion with the exhibition’s curators; a first look at immersive documentary film clips from Sierra Leone\, Burkina Faso\, Nigeria\, and Cameroon; a signature West African-inspired cocktail; drumming performances; an opportunity to meet Dr. Aimé Kantoussan\, Research Director of the Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar; and a virtual presentation from Cameroonian artist Hervé Youmbi. \nAdditional members of the New African Masquerades research team will present their developing scholarship and discuss the project’s ethical methodologies and foundational artistic\, community\, and institutional collaborations. \nThis program is free with advanced registration. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\nIn New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\, an international team of scholars and artists present the stories of four individual masquerade artists\, their motivations\, artistic choices\, and the patronage and economic networks with which they engage in order to make clear that masquerade is fundamentally contemporary. The show offers fresh research models for contemporary masquerade\, bringing to the fore issues relating to restitution\, ownership\, and research ethics. This is the first major exhibition on contemporary West African masquerade artists to focus on individual creators rather than the typical presentation of masquerades as products of entire cultures\, which undermines the nuanced and layered stories that individual artists and masquerades tell.  \nThe exhibition team is led by Amanda M. Maples\, Françoise Billion Richardson Curator of African Art at NOMA. Co-curators include Jordan A. Fenton\, Associate Professor of Art History at Miami University Ohio\, and Lisa Homann\, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Aimé Kantoussan\, Research Director at the Musée des Civilisations Noires/Museum of Black Civilizations (MCN) and Hervé Youmbi\, a leading contemporary artist in Cameroon\, are research collaborators and contributing authors.
