SUMMARY:Honoring Juneteenth at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NOMA for a day of activities to honor Juneteenth—the annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States—and support the ongoing movement for justice\, equity\, and liberation. Come together on the Museum steps for family art-making; experience a moving dance performance co-presented by Edward Spots and Magnolia Dance & Company; view a photographic banner created by students at New Harmony High School; and delve into online programming. Stop by throughout the day to share what honoring Juneteenth means to you. \nAll events and activities are free. To reserve your free ticket for admission to NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, click here.  \nJuneteenth refers to June 19\, 1865\, when Union general Gordon Granger read out federal orders declaring that all people previously enslaved in Texas were free\, nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Through grassroots efforts\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 from a day of unheeded military orders as the first celebration of “Juneteenth” a year later in 1866\, and it continues as a celebration for Black liberation across the country. To learn more\, see  “What Is Juneteenth?” by Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. \n  \n\n\n\nPrograms and Events\n\nEdward Spots: Motion to Move\n\n\n 2 pm and 4 pm\n\n\n Lapis Center for the Arts\n\n\n \n\n\nMotion to Move is a performance event by renowned dancer and choreographer Edward Spots with Magnolia Dance & Company. All orders of the Music Meal Box for this concert must be placed by 5:00 pm on Wednesday\, April 21. A bar by Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group will also sell select beverages during the performance. Outside food and drink will not be allowed in the sculpture garden during this program. \nView the Menu and Place an Order \nAbout Alexey Marti\nAt the zealous age of 16 years old\, the expressive Cuban-born percussionist\, composer\, and bandleader\, Alexey Marti\, began formal percussion studies under the passionate guidance of Maestro Oscar Valdes\, percussionist and singer for the famous Cuban group\, Irakere. The mentorship blossomed into a deep-rooted professional relationship\, allotting Marti a tenured-position as percussionist for Valdes’ renowned Afro-Cuban ensemble\, Dia.kara. \nIn 2008\, Marti took a tremendous leap of faith\, moving to and residing in the musical and historical city of New Orleans\, Louisiana to propel the advancement of his musical aspirations and trajectory. Marti’s multi-faceted expertise on percussion and piano garnered him the opportunity to join the University of New Orleans Jazz Program\, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in percussion & piano. During this time\, Marti founded one of NOLA’s in demand Latin-funk-fusion quintets\, Alexey Marti and Urban Minds\, garnering him the slot of opening act for the world famous Chucho Valdes in concert in 2012. On three occasions\, Marti was nominated for the New Orleans Big Easy Music Award in both Latin and World music categories from 2014-2018\, winning best performer in the category in 2018. \nMarti’s audience-participatory performances and celebratory spirit has captured the hearts of music lovers in New Orleans and in turn has maintained Marti’s ensemble as a featured regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival since 2009. Some of the notable artists for which Marti has recorded for and/or performed with include the following: The Headhunters\, Platinum (2011)\, Delfeayo Marsallis (2016)\, Orlando Maraca Valle\, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez\, Jim Walker\, Hubert Laws\, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra\, Bill Summers\, Davell Crawford and Jason Marsallis\, to name a few. Most recently\, Marti expanded his vocation\, working as a percussionist for digital media and films. His recent accolades include recording percussion for the new TV series\, Roots (2016) and serving as film composer for two documentaries: Chasing Dreams: A Leah Chase Story and Codigo Color Memorias (Cuban documentary). \nMarti shares his music with the release of two compelling albums\, Travesia\, (2017) and Mundo (2019). These recordings sonically capture the impetus of Marti’s musical compositions and arrangements – to provoke both music listeners and musicians to dare and dream of newfangled ways of cross-pollinating musical traditions\, pay respect to the past\, celebrate the present\, and create a new sound for future generations to enjoy. The music crosses between the folkloric and current musical traditions of Cuba meshed with the spiritual bata drumming of West Africa\, and seasoned with hints of United States dixieland\, second line\, blues\, jazz and funk\, creating a fresh approach within the genre of Latin Jazz. \nAbout Mahmoud Chouki\nMahmoud Chouki is a master guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer living and working in New Orleans. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. As artistic director of Rencontre Orient-Occident at Chateau Mercier in Sierre\, Switzerland\, Chouki has brought together a wide range of international musicians to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West\, with music often the only common language between performers. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. In these times when folk music has meant rigidly sticking to a cliched format or collecting hackneyed stylistic features\, the klezmer all stars have attempted to challenge and stretch boundaries…but without sacrificing the most exciting features of social music; driving rhythms\, passion\, and clear melodies that are sublime but remain memorable. \nUsing the inspiration of the city where they began\, the band has formed a unique approach to traditional melodies and\, even more unusual\, a way of writing in the style that leads to a sort of Yiddish Impressionism– keeping audiences dancing but cutting to the depths of their cultural imaginations\, even where they didn’t realize they had one. \nThe Klezmer Allstars have grown into their name and are frequently seen with many of New Orleans’ greatest musicians\, including: Mean Willie Green\, Stanton Moore\, Benjamin Ellman\, Jonathan Freilich\, Joe Cabral\, Glenn Hartman\, Doug Garrison\, Dan Oestreicher\, and Aurora Nealand. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. SUMMARY:A Choice of Weapons: Photography\, Surveillance\, and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Parks famously stated that photography was his “choice of weapons” against racism\, intolerance\, and poverty. While photographs have certainly been used to document and advance social justice causes in the past\, the use of photography in recent protest movements has demonstrated one of the dangers of the medium. While protest photographs have amplified these movements’ messages and visibility\, those very same photographs have been used against their makers by other authorities. This panel will explore the new emerging chapter in the ethics of photography\, considering how the digital\, social world has made photography an instantaneous and global “weapon” that can slip easily from one hand to another\, and offering guidance on ethical and inclusive approaches to protest photography. \nPanelists include Caroline Sinders\, Brian Palmer\, and Tara Pixley. The program will be moderated by Russell Lord\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings at NOMA. \n  \nREGISTER FOR THIS VIRTUAL PANEL \n  \n  \nAbout Creative Assembly\nCreative Assembly is a community engagement initiative by the New Orleans Museum of Art that uses neighborhood-based participatory art experiences as a vehicle for personal exploration\, community collaboration\, and social change. At the New Orleans Museum of Art\, we are committed to connecting to people both within and beyond the museum walls\, and dedicated to developing sustained relationships with the individuals\, organizations\, and diverse communities of New Orleans. Bringing together community members\, artists\, community-based organizations\, and museum staff\, the Creative Assembly Initiative facilitates community-generated art projects and programs in New Orleans neighborhood spaces and at the museum. \n  \nVisit NOMA\nSee the exhibition New Photography: Create\, Collect\, Compile at NOMA through June 6\, 2021 \nRESERVE TICKETS \n\n  \n                                \n  \nNOMA’s Creative Assembly Community Engagement Initiative is supported by the Wagner Foundation. SUMMARY:Helen Gillet in Virtual Concert for Mending the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archaeologist who explores synthesized sounds\, textures\, and rhythms using an acoustic cello. For Mending the Sky\, Gillet will weave together a soundscape using cello\, drum machine\, sounds in nature\, loop pedal\, poetry and storytelling. Across a series of three solo performances\, Gillet will explore the vibrations of sonic disturbance: the tipping points where swollen rivers of human tension and natural imbalances flood the banks of an unsustainable society. Responding to quarantine\, friction and trauma\, Gillet’s performances will search for homeostasis and seek to create spaces for empowerment as she responds musically to the artists and ideas explored in the show. \nEach of three solo performances will take place within the exhibition galleries for Mending the Sky and stream for free across NOMA’s social media channels to offer a wide audience an intimate musical experience at a time when few opportunities for live music exist. \nJoin us on NOMA’s YouTube channel and the home page of this website. \nView previously recorded concerts on October 11 and December 6. \nVirtual programs at NOMA are made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n  \n  \n  \n\n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. \nBest known as a founding member of jazz/funk band Naughty Professor\, Noah Young is one of the most sought-after bassists in New Orleans. Having moved to the city to study jazz with a who’s who of local legends\, Young has stayed busy in his 8+ years of activity in the music scene composing\, recording\, and performing with numerous artists\, including: David Shaw\, George Porter Jr.\, Chali 2na\, Big Freedia\, Ivan Neville\, Eric Bloom\, Mike Dillon\, Sasha Masakowski\, Nigel Hall\, Russell Batiste\, Dee-1\, The Stooges Brass Band\, Leroy Jones\, and many more. No wonder he garnered a nomination for “Best Bassist” in 2017 from OffBeat Magazine\, New Orleans’ largest music publication. \nTicket Limits\nThe purchase of Member tickets is limited by your membership level. \nIndividual: Limit 1 \nFriends & Family: Limit 2 \nSustaining\, Benefactors\, Young Fellows\, and Friends of the Sculpture Garden: Limit 4 \nFellows and Circles: Limit 6 \nTo upgrade your membership\, please contact the membership office at membership@noma.org or (504) 658-4130. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community.
\nJoin us on NOMA’s YouTube or Instagram channels or the home page of noma.org. \nAdditional live-streaming concerts will be held on Sunday\, December 6\, 2020\, and Sunday\, January 31\, 2021\, at 6 pm. \nVirtual programs at NOMA are made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr.
