SUMMARY:Helen Gillet in Virtual Concert for Mending the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archaeologist who explores synthesized sounds\, textures\, and rhythms using an acoustic cello. For Mending the Sky\, Gillet will weave together a soundscape using cello\, drum machine\, sounds in nature\, loop pedal\, poetry and storytelling. Across a series of three solo performances\, Gillet will explore the vibrations of sonic disturbance: the tipping points where swollen rivers of human tension and natural imbalances flood the banks of an unsustainable society. Responding to quarantine\, friction and trauma\, Gillet’s performances will search for homeostasis and seek to create spaces for empowerment as she responds musically to the artists and ideas explored in the show. \nEach of three solo performances will take place within the exhibition galleries for Mending the Sky and stream for free across NOMA’s social media channels to offer a wide audience an intimate musical experience at a time when few opportunities for live music exist. \nJoin us on NOMA’s YouTube or Instagram channels or the home page of noma.org. \nAdditional live-streaming concerts will be held on Sunday\, December 6\, 2020\, and Sunday\, January 31\, 2021\, at 6 pm. \nVirtual programs at NOMA are made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. Taylor Foundation;  Dr. Scott S. Cowen; The RosaMary Foundation; The Azby Fund; the Louisiana Division of the Arts\, Office of Cultural Development\, Department of Culture\, Recreation & Tourism\, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts\, a Federal agency; The Collins C. SUMMARY:Lecture: Herbert Bayer and the Bauhaus Legacy in America with Benjamin Benus
DESCRIPTION:NOMA invites artists\, curators\, and other special guests to speak throughout the year. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nBenjamin Benus\, an associate professor of art and design history at Loyola University in New Orleans\, specializes in the history of twentieth-century art and design\, with a focus on Central Europe in the years between the world wars. His research examines connections between avant-garde art\, scientific illustration\, and data visualization during this period. This talk will be held in NOMA’s boardroom on the second floor. \nAs director of the Bauhaus printing and advertising workshop from 1925 to 1928\, the Austrian-born artist Herbert Bayer helped to shape the school’s distinctive approach to graphic design. This talk\, presented in conjunction with the exhibition An Ideal Unity: The Bauhaus and Beyond\, considers how Bayer\, following his immigration to the United States in 1938\, continued to explore and develop Bauhaus design principles within a variety of media\, including book illustration\, advertising\, and exhibition design. \n
