SUMMARY:Kolaj Fest at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:Kolaj Fest New Orleans—a multi-day festival and symposium about contemporary collage and its role in art\, culture\, and society—heads to the museum for a day full of conversations\, tours\, and more. \nThe event brings together collage artists and art professionals to elevate the status of collage through panel discussions\, exhibitions\, and activities. Attendees will meet\, network\, and share community\, camaraderie\, and fellowship\, all while developing new ideas for artmaking\, writing\, and curatorial projects. \nGet inspired to champion collage in the year to come.  \nLEARN MORE ABOUT KOLAJ FEST \nThis event is free with museum admission. Museum visitors are invited to join in on the day’s programs.  \n\nSchedule\nDaily Collage Congress: Welcome to Kolaj Fest\nLapis Center for the Arts\n10:15 am\nHear from a number of artists about projects and exhibitions taking place during the festival. Andrea Lewicki from the Special Agent Collage Collective will introduce the Locative Collage Project taking place during the festival. The tour will include some works in the New African Masquerades exhibition as well as works in the Afropolitan: Contemporary African Arts at NOMA exhibition. Varnado-Brown is a 2024-2025 Creative Assembly artist-in-residence. “NOMA’s Creative Assembly residency promotes community engagement by welcoming artists to collaborate throughout the year with the museum’s permanent collection\, special exhibitions\, and programs.” During the Sacred Mother Space Gallery Walk\, Varnado-Brown will share her experience as a resident artist.  \nPreserving Family History workshop with Nayla Maaruf\nSecond Floor\, Frederick R. Weisman Galleries\n11:30 am –12:15 pm\nNayla Maaruf\, NOMA’s Conservator of Photographs and Works of Art on Paper\, will share her knowledge on disaster preparation at home for family photos and documents\, which also applies to artists with a paper-based practice. Maaruf will also entertain questions from artists who have material concerns about their artwork.  \nVictorian Scrapbook House for Paper Dolls with Beverly Gordon\nLapis Center for the Arts\n1:00 pm –1:30 pm\nDuring her thirty-year career in academia\, Englewood\, Florida artist\, writer\, and educator Beverly Gordon focused a global lens on art identified as domestic and “women’s work”. In this session\, Gordon will present on collages found in late Victorian scrapbook houses. She writes: “These were collage book albums\, ostensibly made as paper doll houses\, which featured double-page spreads representing different rooms in a house. The cover of a given album served as the front door\, the next pages represented the front hall\, and so on into the inner rooms of the home and garden. The furnishings of the rooms consisted of images cut out from trade catalogs\, newspapers and other visual material\, which was ubiquitous in the late 19th century. Scrapbook houses are related to Victorian photocollage\, but the genre stands alone as a particularized tradition.” \nGallery Tour of Nicolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan\, Mississippi Watershed with Curator Brian Piper\nSecond Floor\, Zita and Luther Templemann Galleries  \n1:oo pm \nBrian Piper\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings\, will lead a gallery tour of the exhibition Nicolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan\, Mississippi Watershed. French artist Nicolas Floc’h’s Fleuves-Océan project traces the movement of water across our planet\, exploring its flow through varied habitats and representing the ways we are all connected by water cycles and systems. On display are vibrant monochromatic photographs of the color of water made under the surface paired with dramatic black-and-white landscape photographs made along the banks of the Mississippi and its tributaries—from Louisiana and across the country. Floc’h documented the entire span of the Mississippi during a 2022 Villa Albertine artist residency in the United States in collaboration with the Camargo Foundation and Artconnexion. This exhibition\, organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art\, illustrates the importance of a network of water that links people across the entire continent. Floc’h’s photography translates important scientific concerns—such as climate change and the looming water crisis—into an overwhelming aesthetic experience\, without sacrificing any urgency or insistence. \nLearn more about the exhibition here. \nSymbols on a Cave Wall: Storytelling & Collage with Andrea Lewicki\, Carolyn E. Oliver\, Jordan Cerminara\, Kirk Read\, and Erica Trabold\nLapis Center for the Arts\n1:45 pm – 2:45 pm \nStorytelling is a fundamental part of the human experience. Every culture does it\, sometimes in wildly different ways. From painted symbols on a cave wall to role playing video games\, people are telling stories but also sharing vital information\, conveying ethics and morality\, or building a cosmology that explains the world in which we live. In this panel\, we will hear from artists whose practice is deeply involved with storytelling and collage. \nDocent guided Tour of New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\nFirst Floor\, Ella West Freeman Galleries \n2:00 pm \nNew African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations is a major exhibition presenting the works of four contemporary artists working in cities across West Africa: Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa\, Sheku “Goldenfinger” Fofanah\, David Sanou\, and Hervé Youmbi. Learn more about the exhibition here. \nFor collage artists and enthusiasts\, New African Masquerades is an opportunity to see artwork by contemporary African artists whose practice is rooted in ancestral traditions\, embedded in communities\, performed live for people in performances\, processions\, and other ceremonies. “Looking at these artworks through the lens of collage\, we can see how the artists are creating a bridge between the past and the present\, mixing contemporary media with a traditional visual language\, and creating dynamic experiences for the viewers they encounter. What does it mean to think of art objects as living entities?” said Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour. “The exhibition also invites us to reflect on how we think about historical and contemporary art from Africa and how these objects make their way into European and North American institutions.” \nWhere are we?: Collage Artists & a Sense of Place\nLapis Center for the Arts\n3:00 pm – 4:00 pm \nIn Lure of the Local\, Lucy Lippart wrote\, “When we know where we are\, we’re in a far better position to understand what other cultural groups are experiencing within a time and place we all share.” Where are we? Modern life is fundamentally diasporic in nature. Understanding place is critical to survival and resilience in the 21st century where hostile factors of climate change\, late-stage capitalism\, and rising authoritarianism threaten community cohesion already stressed by Modernity.  \nEach of the four artists in the New African Masquerades exhibition contribute to a sense of place in their communities. They draw on traditions\, folklore\, and religious practices. They use symbols and imagery familiar to their communities. Their performances bring people together and offer the opportunity to connect with ancestral traditions and create shared memories for the future. All of these things foster a sense of place. And each of these artists operate from the now\, putting that sense of place in conversation with the Modern lives in which their communities exist.   \n In this session\, we will hear from four artists whose work also speaks to a sense of place. \n\nAbout Kolaj Institute\nKolaj Institute is a 501c3 Louisiana-based\, non-profit organization whose mission is to support artists\, curators\, and writers who seek to study\, document\, & disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium\, a genre\, a community\, and a 21st century movement. The institute also publishes Kolaj Magazine\, a quarterly\, printed\, art magazine reviewing and surveying contemporary collage with an international perspective.

SUMMARY:Soul-Sip at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:NOMA is committed to offering innovative experiences for learning and interpretation and uniting\, inspiring\, and engaging diverse communities and cultures. Throughout the year\, the museum provides an after-hours inclusive programmatic mix of unique experiences in response to art from across time and place. This summer\, NOMA presents Soul-Sip\, an art and wine series blending the sacred and social elements of guided meditation and wine appreciation to relax the mind\, elevate the seven senses\, and savor delicious sips of wine.  \nPerceptions about the cultural practices in museums are ever-changing. However\, one thing consistent within the culture of museums is receptions that include wine. Wine is among humankind’s oldest beverages\, regularly appearing in museums and pictured in paintings authenticated by ancient distilling pottery. It is the beverage of choice to mark exhibition openings\, closings\, receptions\, and other special occasions. \nThe evening includes guided meditation\, wine-tasting instruction\, a curated wine flight\, small bites from Cafe NOMA\, a discussion of select wine-related artwork from NOMA’s permanent collection\, and a little lagniappe! \nGeneral Admission $95 | NOMA Members $75 \nRegister Now \n\nAbout Soul-Sip®\nThe soul is the immaterial part of a human being\, the actuating cause of an individual life. A sip is the act of drinking by taking small mouthfuls. Soul-Sip blends the sacred and social elements of guided meditation and wine appreciation in a 60-minute class designed to relax the mind\, elevate the seven senses\, and savor delicious sips of wine. \nSense of Place Mat\nWhen you sit for meditation\, you use a mat\, cushion\, or chair to help create a calm\, sacred space for your practice. Soul-Sip classes use a placemat as your practice space; doodle\, decorate\, take notes\, roll it up at the end of class\, and take it with you!  \nWine Flights\nAligning what is in a wine glass with who is holding the glass opens a direct path to mindfulness. Soul-Sip wine selections represent an appreciation for the people\, places\, and vineyards who share the journey of sipping. The Vine Life Group curates wine flights for Soul-Sip. \nAbout the Instructor\nDr. Redell Hearn\, Ph.D.\, is Chief Educator at NOMA and the creator and instructor of Soul-Sip. SUMMARY:Collaborating Across Continents: Developing a Contemporary Masquerade Exhibition for North American and African Audiences
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Orleans Museum of Art for a presentation on contemporary West African masquerade\, in advance of the upcoming exhibition New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\, opening at the museum in April 2025. \nThe program will include a panel presentation and discussion with the exhibition’s curators; a first look at immersive documentary film clips from Sierra Leone\, Burkina Faso\, Nigeria\, and Cameroon; a signature West African-inspired cocktail; drumming performances; an opportunity to meet Dr. Aimé Kantoussan\, Research Director of the Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar; and a virtual presentation from Cameroonian artist Hervé Youmbi. \nAdditional members of the New African Masquerades research team will present their developing scholarship and discuss the project’s ethical methodologies and foundational artistic\, community\, and institutional collaborations. \nThis program is free with advanced registration. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\nIn New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\, an international team of scholars and artists present the stories of four individual masquerade artists\, their motivations\, artistic choices\, and the patronage and economic networks with which they engage in order to make clear that masquerade is fundamentally contemporary. The show offers fresh research models for contemporary masquerade\, bringing to the fore issues relating to restitution\, ownership\, and research ethics. This is the first major exhibition on contemporary West African masquerade artists to focus on individual creators rather than the typical presentation of masquerades as products of entire cultures\, which undermines the nuanced and layered stories that individual artists and masquerades tell.  \nThe exhibition team is led by Amanda M. Maples\, Françoise Billion Richardson Curator of African Art at NOMA. Co-curators include Jordan A. Fenton\, Associate Professor of Art History at Miami University Ohio\, and Lisa Homann\, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Aimé Kantoussan\, Research Director at the Musée des Civilisations Noires/Museum of Black Civilizations (MCN) and Hervé Youmbi\, a leading contemporary artist in Cameroon\, are research collaborators and contributing authors.

SUMMARY:Monuments and Memorials to Queer History
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Pride Month\, join us for a conversation about how artists might create monuments to queer community and history. In a discussion moderated by Charlie Tatum\, Director of Marketing and Communications\, historian Robert Fieseler and artists Ryan Leitner and Ryan “phlegm” Gilbert will share their own practices and reflect upon how they consider celebration\, remembrance\, and the past in their work. \nThe program will also consider other works\, including Jim Hodges’s Craig’s closet\, first created for the New York City AIDS Memorial Park and installed in front of NOMA in June 2024\, and Skylar Fein’s Remember the UpStairs Lounge\, which commemorates the arson of a popular gay bar in New Orleans on June 24\, 1973. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Louisiana residents receive free admission every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. \n  \n\nAbout the Panelists\n\nRyan “phlegm” Gilbert\nRyan “phlegm” Gilbert\, a New Orleans-born and -based multidisciplinary artist\, uses mixed-media self-portraiture in works called “ritual dramas” that serve as affirmations of their personal Black universe. phlegm says\, “My work aims to more firmly connect my Black spiritual concept of time\, connecting the past to the present and the present to the future. It’s communally sacred\, personally precious. It attempts to tie all the loose ends of Black ethos\, Black influence\, and Black inspiration into one braid. It is at its core\, an affirmation of life: my life\, the life of my ancestors\, and the life of my community. My work (and by extension my life) makes a production about the necessity and value of Black spiritual presence.” They also penned the mantra “Everything You Love About New Orleans Is Because of Black People.” \n\nRyan Leitner\nRyan Leitner (b. 1986\, South Carolina) is an artist and writer who lives and works in New Orleans. He received his M.F.A. From The Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in 2016\, holds a B.F.A. From Regents College of London\, and was a participant at the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in 2023. SUMMARY:Motion to Move 2024
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Juneteenth\, dancer and choreographer Edward Spots presents Motion to Move 2024 in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts. \nThe performance is the latest in a series of works by Spots exploring themes of freedom\, movement\, justice\, and the spark of change. \nAdvanced registration has closed\, additional seating will be available on a first-come first-serve basis. \n\n\n  \nFrom the Artist\n“On June 19\, 1865\, nearly two years after the legal emancipation of enslaved Africans in the United States of America\, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay\, Texas\, with news of freedom for over 250\,000 African Americans still enslaved. One year later\, in 1866\, the proud descendants reclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in recognition of nationwide liberation. After decades of lobbying\, the date was granted Federal Holiday status in 2021. \nAs a proud native of the City of New Orleans\, I am honored to continue the legacy of Minister John Mosley and my first dance teacher\, Mama Baderiwna Rolland. They believed in embedding the history and meaning of Juneteenth into our city’s consciousness. This year’s Juneteenth celebration is a testament to their vision and our progress. It will be a vibrant showcase of Black excellence in the arts\, featuring Black artistic expression in music\, film\, dance\, poetry\, acting\, and visual design. It’s a celebration that entertains and educates\, informing the audience about the profound significance of Juneteenth.” \n\nAbout Edward Spots\nEdward Emanuel Spots was born and raised in the city of New Orleans. Spots has led choreography showcased at the New Orleans Museum Of Art\, the New Orleans Jazz Market\, Tulane University\, Audubon Park\, and digital platforms. Spots is currently on the board of the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival. He has been featured in films\, commercials\, music videos\, press\, and television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance\, Dance Moms\, Bulgaria’s Dancing With The Stars\, Claws\, and a leading role in the movie America directed by Garrett Bradley. Spots was featured in Gambit’s 40 under 40 and has received a Proclamation from the City of New Orleans for his work. Spots teaches at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts\, Loyola University\, the New Orleans School of Ballet\, Ashé Cultural Arts Center\, and Dancing Grounds.

SUMMARY:Assemblage in New Orleans: Artists in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Kolaj Fest New Orleans\, NOMA will host a panel discussion highlighting the artistic practices and cultural traditions of assemblage and collage in New Orleans. In conversation with Kristina Kay Robinson\, artists Soraya Jean-Louis\, Ryann Sterling\, and Ashley Teamer will share insights into their practices and approaches to assemblage and collage as art forms and cultural connectors.  \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n  \n  \n\nAbout the Panelists\n\nKristina Kay Robinson\nKristina Kay Robinson is an artist\, writer\, and scholar born and raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Her writing in various genres has appeared in Art in America\, Guernica\, The Baffler\, The Nation\, The Massachusetts Review\, and Elle among other outlets. Robinson is a 2019 recipient of the Rabkin Prize for Visual Arts Journalism. Currently\, she serves as the New Orleans editor-at-large for the Atlanta-based Burnaway magazine. \n\nSoraya Jean-Louis \nSoraya Jean-Louis is a Haitian-born\, Harlem- and Brooklyn-raised artist\, independent visual scholar\,/educator\, doula\, and medical anthropologist. Jean-Louis utilizes archival and modern media to honor personal and collective ancestors\, reflect on present realities\, and imagine expansive possibilities through collage\, assemblage\, abstract expressionism\, surrealist paintings\, installation\, writing\, and the natural healing arts. She explores speculative possibilities within Black Feminist Futurist frameworks\, lived experiences\, ancestry\, culture\, interiorities\, identity\, and more. \n\nRyann Sterling \nRyann Sterling is a southern Louisiana artist who takes the viewer through a sacred and sometimes secret journey through collages\, mixed media\, sculpture\, and photography. Sterling’s experiences and the delicate intersection of art\, the feminine\, and southern black spirituality\, connects the past to the future while reminding the viewer to remain present.  \n\nAshley Teamer \nAshley Teamer’s collages explore the relationships between the body\, nature\, space\, and time. Teamer uses painting\, sculpture\, photography\, and sound to creatively intervene with indoor and outdoor architecture\, revealing the malleability of our built environment. Through layering images\, Teamer’s invented landscapes reveal relationships between divergent moments. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2014) and the Joan Mitchell Center (2018). Teamer received a BFA from Boston University in 2013 and an MFA from Yale University in 2022. \n\nFeatured Image Credits: Ryann Sterling\, Rites Through Passage\, 2021.
