SUMMARY:Celebrating Juneteenth at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:On June 19\, 1865\, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America\, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay\, Texas\, with news of freedom for over 250\,000 African Americans. With the principles of self-determination\, citizenship\, and democracy magnifying their hopes and dreams\, those Texans held fast to the promise of true liberty for all. \nOne year later\, in 1866\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in recognition of Black liberation nationwide\, continuing the celebration and lobbying for the federal holiday status granted in 2021. \nJuneteenth is a time to gather with family and community\, honor the present\, and reflect on shared history and tradition. Recognizing the legacy of liberation that Juneteenth represents\, NOMA invites you to reflect on the theme of “movement” as you engage with artworks in the galleries and Besthoff Sculpture Garden. \nIn celebration of Juneteenth\, NOMA is free to the public on Sunday\, June 18. \n\nActivities\n\nFreedom at the Mat\n10:30 am | Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, Sculpture Pavilion\nCelebrate Juneteenth at the New Orleans Museum of Art Sculpture Garden by expressing your freedom in community with others in a 60-minute joy of freedom movement & mindfulness experience presented by Freedom At The Mat. \nSIGN UP NOW \nMusic in the Garden\n2 pm | Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, Pine Grove\nDue to excessive heat\, Music in the Garden will move inside NOMA’s Great Hall. \nEncounter the sounds of local New Orleans musicians while strolling through the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden on select Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 pm. \nJoin us on Sunday\, June 18\, for a performance featuring Amine Boucetta. The concert will take place in Pine Grove\, the first green space by the main entrance on Dueling Oaks Dr. \nLEARN MORE \nArt-Making Activity\n10 am–4 pm | Great Hall\nExplore freedom of expression in a figure drawing art-making activity with NOMA educators. Live models will be present every hour on the half hour.

SUMMARY:Maya Symposium Keynote Address and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the keynote event of the 18th annual Tulane Maya Symposium\, Mapping Inequality: Lessons from Central Mexico with Barbara E. Mundy\, Robertson Chair in Latin American Art\, Tulane University. A reception for all attendees will follow the lecture. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Advance registration for the keynote address is encouraged but not required. \nRegister Here \nThis page is for keynote event registration only. For more information about the 18th Annual Tulane Maya Symposium: Inequality Among the Maya and to access the full symposium registration\, please visit their website. \n\nKeynote Abstract\nPainted manuscripts of Central Mexico often present images of historic migrations\, led by elites\, and genealogies of ruling families\, set against a backdrop of territory. Cartography\, then\, offers a visual record of the inequality implicit in social hierarchies. At the same time\, as physical objects that had to be created and cared for\, maps depended upon the involvement of a range of social actors and were shaped over time by evolving practices. In this talk\, I turn to a selection of maps from Central Mexico to show levels of social complexity implicated in objects that seem\, on their surfaces\, to offer direct records of inequality. \n \nAbout Barbara E. Mundy\nBarbara E. Mundy’s scholarship dwells in zones of contact between Native peoples and settler colonists as they forged new visual cultures in the Americas. She is particularly interested in the social construction of space and its imaginary\, which was the subject of her first book\, The Mapping of New Spain. Her most recent book\, The Death of Aztec Tenochtitlan\, the Life of Mexico City\, draws on Indigenous texts and representations to counter a colonialist historiography\, and to argue for the city’s nature as an Indigenous city through the sixteenth century. With Dana Leibsohn\, Mundy is the co-creator of Vistas: Visual Culture in Spanish America\, 1520-1820\, an NEH funded project. \nShe serves the editorial board of Estudios de Cultura Náhuatl\, and The Americas\, as well as on the advisory board of the Society of Fellows in Critical Bibliography. Mundy is the past president of the American Society for Ethnohistory (2021-22) and was the 2021-22 Kislak Chair at the Library of Congress. She has received fellowships from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Art (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art\, and the John Carter Brown Library in support of her work.

SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Celebration with Ecos Latinos
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ecos Latinos\, NOMA hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration featuring a night of music in the Lapis Center for the Arts. Performers include violinist Ángel Ríos\, Bodoma Garifuna drummers and dancers\, Patrice Fisher and Arpa\, Mariachi Jalisco\, and Mexico Y Sus Raíces dance group. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm\, and performances begin at 7:00 pm. \n$10 general admission | $5 for NOMA members \nSold Out \n\nAbout the Performers\nÁngel Ríos\nHonduran violinist and composer Ángel Ríos mixes elements of traditional Garifuna Afro-Caribbean music from his country with jazz. Born in San Pedro Sula\, Ríos began to study violin at the age of seven\, and he continued his musical studies at the Victor Lopez School of Music and Tiradientes College. He is a graduate of Francisco Morazon University in music. He has recorded three albums and performed as a soloist and with an orchestra around the world. Ríos currently lives in Miami\, where he directs his own Camay Orchestra and uses his classical training to arrange and compose music that expresses the culture of Honduras. \nBodoma Garifuna Group\nCarlos “Bodoma” Norales is a Garifuna singer\, drummer\, and composer who\, through his music\, connects youth with ancestral traditions. Bodoma was born in La Ceiba\, and at the age of thirteen\, he traveled to San Pedro Sula to study. He became interested in Garifuna cultural activities and began composing in the rhythms and style of Garifuna cultural traditions. In 2007\, he met Latin jazz composer Patrice Fisher\, and they started an ongoing collaboration involving Honduran\, Garifuna\, and New Orleans-based musicians. \nPatrice Fisher and Arpa\nLatin jazz harpist Patrice Fisher favors the music of Brazil and Cuba\, saying that\, not only is the harp “comfortable” harmonically with the music\, but that she herself is drawn to the rhythmic complexities and syncopations: “that’s what makes you want to dance.” Fisher is a graduate of Tulane University and the University of New Orleans. She lives in New Orleans\, where she has been composing and performing since the 1980s. She has also appeared at local and international jazz festivals with her group Arpa\, in locations such as Germany\, Brazil\, Mexico\, and Guatemala. \nMariachi Jalisco\nEl Mariachi Jalisco was started in Baton Rouge in 2010 as the first mariachi group in the state of Louisiana. Eider Martinez and other group members decided to revive the Mariachi Jalisco Havana Cuba\, a musical group that they had in their native Cuba. All the members have over ten years of experience in this genre of traditional Mexican music and are graduates of various musical conservatories. They have performed ten times at the International Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara\, and made various television appearances which have been broadcast throughout Latin America and the United States. \nMexico Y Sus Raíces\nMexico Y Sus Raíces is a Mexican folkloric dance group that shows the beauty of local dances in Jalisco\, Mexico\, through music and colorful mariachi costumes. \n\nAbout Ecos Latinos\nEcos Latinos is a monthly performance series featuring Hispanic musicians\, poets\, dancers\, and visual artists—both local and international—at schools\, hospitals\, libraries\, and festivals in Louisiana. Additionally\, Ecos Latinos produces professionally edited documentary videos showcasing the music of Louisiana composers. \nLearn More \n\nAdditional Credits\nThe Ecos Latinos Hispanic Heritage Celebration is supported by grants from Arts Council of New Orleans\, City of New Orleans\, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy\, Louisiana Division of the Arts\, South Arts\, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation\, National Endowment for the Arts\, and the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund.
