SUMMARY:Celebrating Juneteenth at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NOMA for a day of activities to celebrate Juneteenth—the annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States—and support the ongoing movement for justice\, equity\, and liberation. Come together for special programs\, performances\, guided tours\, and art-making activities for all ages. Stop by throughout the day to share what celebrating Juneteenth means to you. \nPrograms and admission are free to the public. \nRegister Now \nPlease note that reservations with a timed ticket are required to view Queen Nefertari’s Egypt during this day. \n\nFaith\, Emancipation\, and Hope!\nPresented by the New Orleans Opera and OperaCréole\n2 pm\nThis 50-minute program centers on the contributions of classical and operatic composers of the African Diaspora\, highlighting those from New Orleans. The program includes the music of Edmond Dédé\, Ernesto Lecuona\, and more! \n \nDetroit Brooks Sr. Trio\n11:00 am\nDetroit Brooks\, famed session and touring guitarist of the New Orleans music scene\, has the most recognizable face in the city. Often admired by guitarists world-wide\, Brooks’ laid-back demeanor masks one of the most heralded and sought-after performer\, songwriter\, and session men of our time. \nHe began his career at an early age\, touring with his famous family which includes his world-famous sister Juanita Brooks\, of “Juanita’s Gospel Express\,” as well as his acclaimed father\, George A. Brooks\, Sr.\, of the famous “Masonic Kings.” Like many accomplished guitarists\, Detroit mastered his craft on the road where the performances were “long\, free and continuous.” His skill\, technique and experience brought him quick recognition and the opportunity to play with gospel greats like Clarence Fountain & the Five Blind Boys\, Dorothy Norwood\, Reverend Ernest Franklin\, Albertina Walker\, Raymond Myles and The Rams and the famed Zion Harmonizers. \n \n  \nGuided Tours of Queen Nefertari’s Egypt\n10:30 am\, 1:00 pm\, and 3:30 pm\nJoin a tour of Queen Nefertari’s Egypt designed for all ages. There is limited capacity for each time slot. Please sign up at the admissions desk when you arrive. \n \nArt-Making Activity: Freedom News\n10 am–4 pm\nOn the first floor of the museum\, participate in an art-making activity led by NOMA museum educators inspired by the history of Juneteenth. \n \nFree Admission to the Museum and Queen Nefertari’s Egypt\n10 am–5 pm\nOn Sunday\, June 19\, enjoy free admission to NOMA\, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, and the special exhibition Queen Nefertari’s Egypt. #ExploreNOMA with our complimentary mobile guide\, which explores the theme of freedom throughout the museum. \n \n\nAbout Juneteenth\nJuneteenth refers to June 19\, 1865\, when Union general Gordon Granger read out federal orders declaring that all people previously enslaved in Texas were free\, nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Through grassroots efforts\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 from a day of unheeded military orders as the first celebration of “Juneteenth” a year later in 1866\, and it continues as a celebration for Black liberation across the country. We explore what City Park’s land has looked like in the past—tracing Indigenous histories\, stories of enslavement and emancipation\, segregation and Civil Rights\, all the way to the present day. By looking thoughtfully and critically at these histories\, we set the stage for an interactive art project that envisions what City Park should look like in the future. Come join the conversation!  \nGrow Dat Youth Farm\, located in City Park\, is dedicated to nurturing a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing food. Sculptures in the garden help tell the story of New Orleans’ relationship with water through this interactive walk for families. At each stop\, you’ll look closely at artworks to think and learn about all things water—from the river’s formation to flood management\, green infrastructure\, and more! \nThe Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans seeks to build a diverse network for all impacted by flood risk by focusing on equitable practices to sustainably live and thrive with water. Learn more about the Water Collaborative at nolawater.org. \nArt-Making: Eco-Futurisms with Alaina Comeaux\n10 am–3 pm | Coleman Courtyard\nWhat do you dream of for our ecosystem’s future? Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli\, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin. The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition\, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues\, jewelry\, vases\, papyrus\, steles\, wooden coffins\, and stone sarcophagi\, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina\, home to those who created the royal tombs. \nLearn More \nCovid-19 Safety Guidelines\nNOMA’s primary concern is the health of our visitors\, staff\, and community. SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art 2021: Enduring Care
DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans Museum of Art is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2021 by presenting ENDURING CARE\, a video program highlighting strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. The program features newly commissioned work by Katherine Cheairs\, Cristóbal Guerra\, Danny Kilbride\, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey\, Beto Pérez\, Steed Taylor\, and J Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project. \nFrom histories of harm reduction and prison activism to the long-term effects of HIV medication\, ENDURING CARE centers stories of collective care\, mutual aid\, and solidarity while pointing to the negligence of governments and nonprofits. The program’s title suggests a dual meaning\, honoring the perseverance and commitment of care workers yet also addressing the potential for harm from medications and healthcare providers. ENDURING CARE disrupts the assumption that an epidemic can be solved with pharmaceuticals alone\, recasting community work as a lasting form of medicine. \nDrop by NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts anytime between 10 am and 5 pm on Wednesday\, December 1\, to view the video program. This program is included with museum admission\, and on Wednesdays\, Louisiana residents receive free admission\, courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nReserve Tickets \n\nDive into the following discussion guide to further investigate the topics\, themes\, and ideas explored in ENDURING CARE. \nDownload \n\nAbout the Films\nKatherine Cheairs\, Voices at the Gate\nVoices at the Gate juxtaposes the bucolic landscapes inhabited by women’s prisons with archival and contemporary audio recordings of poems\, essays\, and interviews produced by women of color in the early 19990s at the intersection of incarceration and HIV & AIDS activism. \nKatherine “Kat” Cheairs is a filmmaker\, educator\, curator\, activist and community artist. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Production from the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. Kat’s new project\, In This House\, currently in development\, is a video installation exploring HIV/AIDS narratives through the Black body. \nCristóbal Guerra\, Nobleza(s) de Sangre\nTwo fragmented interviews with artists living with HIV in Puerto Rico mediate an audiovisual invocation of the late Boricua poet Manuel Ramos Otero who passed away from complications of the virus in 1990. He is the founding Director at Thinking Film\, a not-for-profit organization that exists to provide marginalized communities with a voice and tell stories that challenge the way people see the world.  \nAbdul-Aliy A. In 2018\, his docu-series “Tlaxcala Indigena” received an honorable mention from the National Journalism Prize. \nSteed Taylor\, I Am a Long-Term AIDS Survivor\nThrough a chorus of voices\, Steed Taylor will explore the difficulties of being a long-term AIDS survivor and the unexpected health problems facing many senior survivors. \nSteed Taylor‘s art includes public works as well as art for gallery settings. SUMMARY:Honoring Juneteenth at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NOMA for a day of activities to honor Juneteenth—the annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States—and support the ongoing movement for justice\, equity\, and liberation. Come together on the Museum steps for family art-making; experience a moving dance performance co-presented by Edward Spots and Magnolia Dance & Company; view a photographic banner created by students at New Harmony High School; and delve into online programming. To reserve your free ticket for admission to NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, click here.  \nJuneteenth refers to June 19\, 1865\, when Union general Gordon Granger read out federal orders declaring that all people previously enslaved in Texas were free\, nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Through grassroots efforts\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 from a day of unheeded military orders as the first celebration of “Juneteenth” a year later in 1866\, and it continues as a celebration for Black liberation across the country. Outside food and drink will not be allowed in the sculpture garden during this program. \nView the Menu and Place an Order \nAbout Alexey Marti\nAt the zealous age of 16 years old\, the expressive Cuban-born percussionist\, composer\, and bandleader\, Alexey Marti\, began formal percussion studies under the passionate guidance of Maestro Oscar Valdes\, percussionist and singer for the famous Cuban group\, Irakere. The mentorship blossomed into a deep-rooted professional relationship\, allotting Marti a tenured-position as percussionist for Valdes’ renowned Afro-Cuban ensemble\, Dia.kara. \nIn 2008\, Marti took a tremendous leap of faith\, moving to and residing in the musical and historical city of New Orleans\, Louisiana to propel the advancement of his musical aspirations and trajectory. Marti’s multi-faceted expertise on percussion and piano garnered him the opportunity to join the University of New Orleans Jazz Program\, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in percussion & piano. During this time\, Marti founded one of NOLA’s in demand Latin-funk-fusion quintets\, Alexey Marti and Urban Minds\, garnering him the slot of opening act for the world famous Chucho Valdes in concert in 2012. On three occasions\, Marti was nominated for the New Orleans Big Easy Music Award in both Latin and World music categories from 2014-2018\, winning best performer in the category in 2018. \nMarti’s audience-participatory performances and celebratory spirit has captured the hearts of music lovers in New Orleans and in turn has maintained Marti’s ensemble as a featured regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival since 2009. Some of the notable artists for which Marti has recorded for and/or performed with include the following: The Headhunters\, Platinum (2011)\, Delfeayo Marsallis (2016)\, Orlando Maraca Valle\, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez\, Jim Walker\, Hubert Laws\, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra\, Bill Summers\, Davell Crawford and Jason Marsallis\, to name a few. Most recently\, Marti expanded his vocation\, working as a percussionist for digital media and films. His recent accolades include recording percussion for the new TV series\, Roots (2016) and serving as film composer for two documentaries: Chasing Dreams: A Leah Chase Story and Codigo Color Memorias (Cuban documentary). \nMarti shares his music with the release of two compelling albums\, Travesia\, (2017) and Mundo (2019). These recordings sonically capture the impetus of Marti’s musical compositions and arrangements – to provoke both music listeners and musicians to dare and dream of newfangled ways of cross-pollinating musical traditions\, pay respect to the past\, celebrate the present\, and create a new sound for future generations to enjoy. The music crosses between the folkloric and current musical traditions of Cuba meshed with the spiritual bata drumming of West Africa\, and seasoned with hints of United States dixieland\, second line\, blues\, jazz and funk\, creating a fresh approach within the genre of Latin Jazz. \nAbout Mahmoud Chouki\nMahmoud Chouki is a master guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer living and working in New Orleans. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. As artistic director of Rencontre Orient-Occident at Chateau Mercier in Sierre\, Switzerland\, Chouki has brought together a wide range of international musicians to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West\, with music often the only common language between performers. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community.
