DESCRIPTION:This spring\, NOMA presents an eight-part mindfulness course with Dr. Jayashree Rao.  \nThis series of classes will develop skills to help individuals: \n\nCope with the stress\, pain\, and challenges of everyday life\nDeal with distressing events with grace and composure\nBe present and alive in the here and now\n\nThis eight-week course is held on Saturdays in NOMA’s Woldenberg Boardroom. Through guided meditation and brief exercises\, participants will learn to develop mindfulness that will help them experience the present moment during everyday activities. \nAlthough there is no specific promised outcome\, participants typically report feeling more focused and more “in-tune” with themselves and others. To start off this new year\, we are offering a yoga sculpt class centering themes of renewal\, rest\, and mindfulness.  \nThis class\, led by instructor Arielle Hunter\, is a beginner-friendly\, dynamic\, and physically challenging workout that combines traditional yoga poses with strength training exercises. In this class\, participants enhance muscle tone and overall strength while still incorporating yoga’s mindfulness and flexibility aspects. \nIt offers a well-rounded fitness experience with a focus on building core stability\, balance\, and cardiovascular endurance. Participants can expect a supportive environment\, guidance on proper form\, and modifications to suit their fitness level\, making it a great choice for those looking to boost both their physical and mental well-being through a structured and invigorating practice.  \nPlease bring your own mat and towel\, as the class will be held on the grass.  \nEnter the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Enrique Alferez Drive\, go right\, and follow the path past the pavilion to access the North Lawn. \nClass will be canceled if temperatures are below 50ºF or inclement weather occurs within two hours before the program. Registrants will be notified if the class is canceled due to inclement weather. \nAdvance registration is sold out. She will clarify what is and what is not ‘Mindfulness’; share how to incorporate the practices into daily life; and discuss the observed effects on how we live our lives and manage our stress and illnesses. It is characterized by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics.\n \nThis workshop will be led by Rose Bratcher who is an ensō painter and a monk at the New Orleans Zen Temple. SUMMARY:ZaZen in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Collins\, an abbot in the New Orleans Zen Temple\, for a meditative ZaZen session in the serene setting of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The precise meaning and method of zazen varies from school to school in the Buddhist tradition\, but in general it can be regarded as a means of insight into the nature of existence. Cushions will be provided for participants.  \nThis program will be offered in conjunction with the exhibition Teaching Beyond Doctrine: Painting and Calligraphy by Zen Masters\, on view in the Arts of Japan Gallery on NOMA’s third floor.
