It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! In addition to monthly book discussions\, the Book Club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor more information on the NOMA Book Club please contact NOMA’s Curator of Education\, Tracy Kennan\, at tkennan@noma.org or (504) 658-4113.\n \nREGISTER NOW \n  \nJANUARY\nNinth Street Women: Lee Krasner\, Elaine de Kooning\, Grace Hartigan\, Joan Mitchell\, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art by Mary Gabriel\nBack Bay Books\, 2019\, ISBN: 9780316226172 \nSet amid the most turbulent social and political period of modern times\, Ninth Street Women is the impassioned\, wild\, sometimes tragic\, always exhilarating chronicle of five women who dared to enter the male-dominated world of twentieth-century abstract painting—not as muses but as artists. From their cold-water lofts\, where they worked\, drank\, fought\, and loved\, these pioneers burst open the door to the art world for themselves and countless others to come. Lee Krasner\, Elaine de Kooning\, Grace Hartigan\, Joan Mitchell\, and Helen Frankenthaler changed American art and society\, tearing up the prevailing social code and replacing it with a doctrine of liberation. In Ninth Street Women\, acclaimed author Mary Gabriel tells a remarkable and inspiring story of the power of art and artists in shaping not just postwar America but the future. \nCURATORIAL PROGRAM | FRIDAY\, JANUARY 15\, 12 pm with Katie Pfohl\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art \nBOOK DISCUSSION | FRIDAY\, JANUARY 29\, 12 pm

SUMMARY:Helen Gillet in Virtual Concert for Mending the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archaeologist who explores synthesized sounds\, textures\, and rhythms using an acoustic cello. For Mending the Sky\, Gillet will weave together a soundscape using cello\, drum machine\, sounds in nature\, loop pedal\, poetry and storytelling. Across a series of three solo performances\, Gillet will explore the vibrations of sonic disturbance: the tipping points where swollen rivers of human tension and natural imbalances flood the banks of an unsustainable society. Responding to quarantine\, friction and trauma\, Gillet’s performances will search for homeostasis and seek to create spaces for empowerment as she responds musically to the artists and ideas explored in the show. \nEach of three solo performances will take place within the exhibition galleries for Mending the Sky and stream for free across NOMA’s social media channels to offer a wide audience an intimate musical experience at a time when few opportunities for live music exist. \nJoin us on NOMA’s YouTube channel and the home page of this website. \nView previously recorded concerts on October 11 and December 6. \nVirtual programs at NOMA are made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n  \n  \n  \n\n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. SUMMARY:A Choice of Weapons: Photography\, Surveillance\, and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Parks famously stated that photography was his “choice of weapons” against racism\, intolerance\, and poverty. While photographs have certainly been used to document and advance social justice causes in the past\, the use of photography in recent protest movements has demonstrated one of the dangers of the medium. While protest photographs have amplified these movements’ messages and visibility\, those very same photographs have been used against their makers by other authorities. This panel will explore the new emerging chapter in the ethics of photography\, considering how the digital\, social world has made photography an instantaneous and global “weapon” that can slip easily from one hand to another\, and offering guidance on ethical and inclusive approaches to protest photography. \nPanelists include Caroline Sinders\, Brian Palmer\, and Tara Pixley. The program will be moderated by Russell Lord\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings at NOMA. \n  \nREGISTER FOR THIS VIRTUAL PANEL \n  \n  \nAbout Creative Assembly\nCreative Assembly is a community engagement initiative by the New Orleans Museum of Art that uses neighborhood-based participatory art experiences as a vehicle for personal exploration\, community collaboration\, and social change. Bringing together community members\, artists\, community-based organizations\, and museum staff\, the Creative Assembly Initiative facilitates community-generated art projects and programs in New Orleans neighborhood spaces and at the museum. \n  \nVisit NOMA\nSee the exhibition New Photography: Create\, Collect\, Compile at NOMA through June 6\, 2021 \nRESERVE TICKETS \n\n  \n                                \n  \nNOMA’s Creative Assembly Community Engagement Initiative is supported by the Wagner Foundation. In these times when folk music has meant rigidly sticking to a cliched format or collecting hackneyed stylistic features\, the klezmer all stars have attempted to challenge and stretch boundaries…but without sacrificing the most exciting features of social music; driving rhythms\, passion\, and clear melodies that are sublime but remain memorable. \nUsing the inspiration of the city where they began\, the band has formed a unique approach to traditional melodies and\, even more unusual\, a way of writing in the style that leads to a sort of Yiddish Impressionism– keeping audiences dancing but cutting to the depths of their cultural imaginations\, even where they didn’t realize they had one. \nThe Klezmer Allstars have grown into their name and are frequently seen with many of New Orleans’ greatest musicians\, including: Mean Willie Green\, Stanton Moore\, Benjamin Ellman\, Jonathan Freilich\, Joe Cabral\, Glenn Hartman\, Doug Garrison\, Dan Oestreicher\, and Aurora Nealand. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. All orders of the Music Meal Box for this concert must be placed by 5:00 pm on Wednesday\, April 21. A bar by Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group will also sell select beverages during the performance. Outside food and drink will not be allowed in the sculpture garden during this program. \nView the Menu and Place an Order \nAbout Alexey Marti\nAt the zealous age of 16 years old\, the expressive Cuban-born percussionist\, composer\, and bandleader\, Alexey Marti\, began formal percussion studies under the passionate guidance of Maestro Oscar Valdes\, percussionist and singer for the famous Cuban group\, Irakere. The mentorship blossomed into a deep-rooted professional relationship\, allotting Marti a tenured-position as percussionist for Valdes’ renowned Afro-Cuban ensemble\, Dia.kara. \nIn 2008\, Marti took a tremendous leap of faith\, moving to and residing in the musical and historical city of New Orleans\, Louisiana to propel the advancement of his musical aspirations and trajectory. Marti’s multi-faceted expertise on percussion and piano garnered him the opportunity to join the University of New Orleans Jazz Program\, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in percussion & piano. During this time\, Marti founded one of NOLA’s in demand Latin-funk-fusion quintets\, Alexey Marti and Urban Minds\, garnering him the slot of opening act for the world famous Chucho Valdes in concert in 2012. On three occasions\, Marti was nominated for the New Orleans Big Easy Music Award in both Latin and World music categories from 2014-2018\, winning best performer in the category in 2018. \nMarti’s audience-participatory performances and celebratory spirit has captured the hearts of music lovers in New Orleans and in turn has maintained Marti’s ensemble as a featured regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival since 2009. Some of the notable artists for which Marti has recorded for and/or performed with include the following: The Headhunters\, Platinum (2011)\, Delfeayo Marsallis (2016)\, Orlando Maraca Valle\, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez\, Jim Walker\, Hubert Laws\, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra\, Bill Summers\, Davell Crawford and Jason Marsallis\, to name a few. Most recently\, Marti expanded his vocation\, working as a percussionist for digital media and films. His recent accolades include recording percussion for the new TV series\, Roots (2016) and serving as film composer for two documentaries: Chasing Dreams: A Leah Chase Story and Codigo Color Memorias (Cuban documentary). \nMarti shares his music with the release of two compelling albums\, Travesia\, (2017) and Mundo (2019). These recordings sonically capture the impetus of Marti’s musical compositions and arrangements – to provoke both music listeners and musicians to dare and dream of newfangled ways of cross-pollinating musical traditions\, pay respect to the past\, celebrate the present\, and create a new sound for future generations to enjoy. The music crosses between the folkloric and current musical traditions of Cuba meshed with the spiritual bata drumming of West Africa\, and seasoned with hints of United States dixieland\, second line\, blues\, jazz and funk\, creating a fresh approach within the genre of Latin Jazz. \nAbout Mahmoud Chouki\nMahmoud Chouki is a master guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer living and working in New Orleans. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. As artistic director of Rencontre Orient-Occident at Chateau Mercier in Sierre\, Switzerland\, Chouki has brought together a wide range of international musicians to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West\, with music often the only common language between performers. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. We require that all registrants to this event wear face masks as per CDC\, state\, and city guidelines. SUMMARY:Book Club Group Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! In addition to monthly book discussions\, the Book Club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. Books are selected in advance and planned for the entire year according to the exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the selected titles. Meetings are held in person or via Zoom\, determined at the beginning of each month. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor more information on the NOMA Book Club please contact NOMA’s Curator of Education\, Tracy Kennan\, at tkennan@noma.org or (504) 658-4113. \nREGISTER NOW \nMAY\nApeirogan: A Novel by Colum McCann\nRandom House\, 2021\, ISBN: 1400069602 \nBassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They inhabit a world of conflict that colors every aspect of their lives\, from the roads they are allowed to drive on to the schools their children attend to the checkpoints\, both physical and emotional\, they must negotiate. But their lives\, however circumscribed\, are upended one after the other: first\, Rami’s 13-year-old daughter\, Smadar\, becomes the victim of suicide bombers; a decade later\, Bassam’s ten-year-old daughter\, Abir\, is killed by a rubber bullet. Rami and Bassam had been raised to hate one another. And yet\, when they learn of each other’s stories\, they recognize the loss that connects them. Together they attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace—and with their one small act\, start to permeate what has for generations seemed an impermeable conflict. This extraordinary novel is the fruit of a seed planted when the novelist Colum McCann met the real Bassam and Rami on a trip with the non-profit organization Narrative 4. McCann was moved by their willingness to share their stories with the world\, by their hope that if they could see themselves in one another\, perhaps others could too. \nBOOK DISCUSSION GROUP | THURSDAY\, MAY 27\, 12 pm \n\n  \n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr.
