Although her aunt\, uncle\, and younger cousin Anna welcome her with open arms\, it’s only very slowly that Frida begins to get used to her new home in the countryside. Striking a careful balance between narrative and atmosphere\, writer-director Carla Simon paints a vivid portrait of a light-filled summer when a little girl has to face the loss of her mother and integration into a new nuclear family. DESCRIPTION:This fall NOMA presents a series of eight mindfulness classes. Mindfulness is defined as experiencing the present moment with open curiosity\, without judgment\, and with a willingness to be with what is. \nMindfulness training teaches skills to help individuals \n\nCope with the stress\, pain\, and challenges of everyday life\nDeal with disturbing events with grace and composure\nBe present and alive in the here and now.\n\nAbout mindfulness classes at NOMA \nThis eight-part mindfulness series will be held on Saturdays from 10–11:30 a.m. beginning August 25. Classes will take place August 25\, September 1\, 8\, 22\, 29\, October 6\, 13\, and 20. There will be no class on September 15. \n $70 nonmembers | $50 NOMA members \nMaximum class size is 30. Participants sign up for the series not per class. Participants will meet in the second-floor Woldenberg Board Room.  \nThis class is SOLD OUT and the waiting list is full. \nParticipants will learn to develop mindfulness through guided meditation and brief exercises that will help them experience the present moment during everyday activities. Although no specific outcome is promised\, participants typically report feeling more alive\, more “in-tune” with themselves and others. In addition\, research has shown significant beneficial effects in dealing with stress\, anxiety\, high blood pressure\, depression\, chronic pain\, and diabetes. \nAbout the instructor: \nDr. Jayashree Rao is a retired pediatric endocrinologist\, who spent thirty years teaching\, researching\, and practicing medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center and Children’s Hospital. For the past several years\, Dr. Rao has practiced and led others in practicing mindfulness\, employing techniques learned in the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course offered by Dr. Dave Potter.

Puerto Rico) is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist\, educator\, curator\, and co-director of the outdoor project space THE FRANKLIN. She is invested in creating and providing visual and educational models propelled by empathy and generosity. Her recent projects—motivated by civic and social actions—focus on fostering relationships with a wide range of communities. Soto’s work has been shown at the Pérez Art Museum in Miami\, Hunter East Harlem Gallery in New York\, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha\, and DePaul Art Museum\, UIC Gallery 400\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (IL). Most recently\, Soto was awarded the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship\, the DCASE for Individual Artist Grant from the City of Chicago\, and the 3Arts Foundation Make A Wave Grant. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, where she is a lecturer in the Contemporary Practices Department\, and bachelor’s degree from Escuela de Artes Plastics de Puerto Rico. \nThis talk is sponsored by The Helis Foundation.

For this exhibition\, NOMA has commissioned Andry to create a a site-specific installation that addresses the uneven urban development in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Her project will connect the city’s rapid and sometimes controversial recent evolution to more historical examples of redevelopment\, combining imagery and text drawn from documentary materials such as maps and development plans with her own imagery and designs. Focusing particularly on the impact of construction and infrastructural development projects such as the creation and expansion of the Interstate 10 elevated expressway\, which leveled a prominent middle-class African American neighborhood in the city\, her installation\, Diverge Divest Deny (repeat)\, sheds light on the lingering ramifications of such projects on African American communities across New Orleans. \nABOUT BY INVITATION ONLY\nNew Orleans filmmaker Rebecca Snedeker explores the insular world of elite white Carnival societies and debutante balls in By Invitation Only.
