SUMMARY:Architecture and Design Film Fest Sneak Peek
DESCRIPTION:The Architecture & Design Film Festival (August 23-26) celebrates the unique creative spirit that drives architecture and design. With a curated selection of films\, events and panel discussions\, ADFF creates an opportunity to entertain\, engage and educate all types of people who are excited about architecture and design. With well-attended screenings\, legendary panelists\, vibrant discussions and events in New York\, Los Angeles and Chicago\, it has grown into the nation’s largest film festival devoted to the subject. The ADFF also programs for international film festivals as well as cultural institutions and private venues. \nNOMA partners with the Louisiana Architectural Foundation for a preview screening of the short film Visions Not Previously Seen: The Groundbreaking Design Work of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon\, followed by the feature-length documentary Design Is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli.  \nThis screening is co-sponsored by NOMA and Knoll. \nABOUT VISIONS NOT PREVIOUSLY SEEN: THE GROUNDBREAKING DESIGN WORK OF BARBARA STAUFFACHER SOLOMON\n“To design is to see as in foresee; to draw visions not previously seen\,” says the groundbreaking designer Barbara Stauffacher Solomon in a new short documentary film about her work and life. A dancer-turned-graphic designer\, Solomon was born in San Francisco but trained in Switzerland at the Basel Art Institute. Combining hard-edge Swiss graphics with California Abstract Expressionism\, she defined “California cool” in the 1960s. (2018 | 15 minutes) \nABOUT DESIGN IS ONE: LELLA AND MASSIMO VIGNELLI\nTwo of the world’s most influential designers\, Lella and Massimo Vignelli’s work covers such a broad spectrum that one could say they are known by everyone\, even by those who don’t know their names. Adhering to self-proclaimed motto\, “If you can’t find it\, design it\,” their achievements in industrial and product design\, graphic and publication design\, corporate identity\, architectural graphics\, and exhibition\, interior\, and furniture design have earned worldwide respect and numerous international awards for over 40 years. After Massimo brought the Helvetica typeface to America in 1965\, he and Lella moved on to a diverse array of projects\, including New York’s subway signage and maps\, the interior of Saint Peter’s Church at Citicorp Center\, Venini lamps\, Heller dinnerware\, furniture for Poltrona Frau\, and branding for Knoll International\, Bloomingdales\, Saks Fifth Avenue\, Ford and American Airlines. Luminaries from the world of design—from architects Richard Meier and Peter Eisenman to graphic designers Milton Glaser\, Michael Bierut\, and Jessica Helmand—bring us into the Vignellis’ world\, capturing their intelligence and creativity\, as well as their humanity\, warmth\, and humor. For this exhibition\, NOMA has commissioned Andry to create a a site-specific installation that addresses the uneven urban development in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Her project will connect the city’s rapid and sometimes controversial recent evolution to more historical examples of redevelopment\, combining imagery and text drawn from documentary materials such as maps and development plans with her own imagery and designs. Focusing particularly on the impact of construction and infrastructural development projects such as the creation and expansion of the Interstate 10 elevated expressway\, which leveled a prominent middle-class African American neighborhood in the city\, her installation\, Diverge Divest Deny (repeat)\, sheds light on the lingering ramifications of such projects on African American communities across New Orleans. \nABOUT BY INVITATION ONLY\nNew Orleans filmmaker Rebecca Snedeker explores the insular world of elite white Carnival societies and debutante balls in By Invitation Only. Questioning their racial exclusivity\, she takes an unprecedented insider’s look at the pageantry and asks: what does it mean to be the queen of the masked men in a krewe? As she examines her own place in an alluring tradition\, Snedeker challenges viewers to reflect on the roles we all play in our lives. Snedeker will be present for a Q&A session following the film. (2006 | Not rated | 56 minutes) \nFriday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. SUMMARY:Picturing Us Film Series: Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories\, NOMA presents six documentary films exploring the people and places that make New Orleans home. The films will be screened as part of Friday Nights at NOMA programming. \n\nFriday\, July 6\, 7 pm: Tchoupitoulas\nFriday\, July 20\, 7 pm: The Sons of Tennessee Williams\nFriday\, July 27\, 7 pm: Mr. Cao Goes to Washington\nFriday\, August 3\, 6 pm: Prejudice and Pride\nFriday\, August 10\, 7 pm: Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together\nFriday\, August 17\, 7 pm: By Invitation Only\n\nABOUT PIANO PLAYERS RARELY EVER PLAY TOGETHER\nFilmmaker Stevenson Palfi’s portrait of three great New Orleans pianists—Isidore “Tuts” Washington\, Henry “Professor Longhair” Byrd\, and Allen Toussaint—was filmed in 1982. The documentary examines how these men influenced one another’s music. The documentary takes viewers through the very personal and sacred New Orleans tradition of a jazz wake and funeral procession for Professor Longhair\, which was taped at the encouragement of his widow\, Alice. Also included is footage of a concert with Toussaint and Washington\, who turned the event into a tribute to “Fess.” Released to critical acclaim more than 35 years ago\, Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together is considered by many to be one of the most important and exciting explorations of New Orleans’ musical tradition ever made. The film is the winner of more than twenty awards. Documentary film editor\, producer\, and writer Tim Watson will be present for a Q&A following the screening. (1982 | Not rated | 1 hour\, 16 minutes) \nWatch a clip from the film: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz14h8kQAGE \n
