The artist arrives without paints or ambition and Estelle is worried. Despite problems of her own\, she encourages him and he eventually paints several family portraits\, one of which assures his fame. A century later\, Anne Gautier struggles to start a career as an artist in New Orleans while restoring an old house she inherited. From an old journal she learns about Estelle\, Edgar\, and her Creole ancestors. A portrait of Estelle causes trouble\, and Anne is forced to confront truths about people she knows as she establishes her life in the 1970s. She likes to call her music “New Orleans Swag” because it is influenced by and mixes in the traditional rhythms of the Second Line\, R&B\, funk\, and Mardi Gras. Jones’s music also celebrates legendary artists\, such as Deacon John and Allen Toussaint\, who made available to people worldwide New Orleans’s soulful and spirit-filled culture\, the bayou landscape\, and a colorful and diverse heritage. Jones mixes in all these traditions to produce songs that honor love\, well-being\, ancestry\, family\, and good times. \nNew Orleans Public Library\n\nWith origins dating back to 1843\, the New Orleans Public Library has grown from a single French Quarter house with a few volumes into a city-wide system serving all of the Orleans Parish with locations spread across the city. The Library has a long and rich history of serving the public by providing access to a wide range of educational\, informational\, and recreational materials\, programs\, and activities for all ages.

Jones brings to the stage a star-studded cast: Lakeba Angelle\, Tiffany Morris\, Jamal Baptiste\, Xavier Molina\, and Cameron Watson. \nTRUST invites us to let our guard down and believe in our own power. Jones and Angelle use art as a tool to influence positive action and impartial respect for all life. They indulge the art(s) of music\, spoken word\, visual art\, dance\, culinary art\, leadership\, altruism\, and reciprocation to spread their message of egality and civility. \n\n\n\n\nKelly Love Jones\nJones’s artistic\, creative\, and cultural work is centered at the heart of healing\, empowerment\, and forgiveness. She likes to call her music “New Orleans Swag” because it is influenced by and mixes in the traditional rhythms of the Second Line\, R&B\, hip-hop\, and folk. Jones’s music also celebrates legendary artists and their traditions\, like Deacon John and Allen Toussaint\, who through their musicality and songwriting made available New Orleans’ soulful and spirit-filled culture\, the bayou landscape\, and its colorful heritage to people around the world. Jones’s music is a good bowl of gumbo\, mixing in all these traditions to produce songs that honor love\, well-being\, ancestry\, family\, tradition\, and good times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLakeba Angelle\nCo-producer Lakeba Angelle is a chef\, dancer\, traveler\, educator\, speaker\, consultant\, writer\, and poet. She’s a well-respected liaison in the artist community in many rights\, and her heart is sincere. Described as an “aggregator of resources\, regarding financial matters in particular\, Lakeba’s knowledge and agility in that arena has more often than not made the difference between success or failure of a venture. Lakeba brings a degree of poise and integrity to every project she’s connected with\, that it automatically helps improve the business posture of the artist moving forward” (Lilli Lewis Project). Angelle is a cum laude graduate of Tulane University and a NOWFE bronze medalist.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTiffany Morris\nBassMonsterTiff\, guru of the bass guitar\, has been mastering for more than two decades. She is a graduate of Xavier University and was born in Slidell\, Louisiana. Tiffany has shared many stages with acclaimed artists such as Ellis Marsalis\, Kelly Love Jones\, Joy Clark\, and Cyril Neville’s Swamp Funk Band. BassMonsterTiff is also the resident bassist at Beacon Light Church of Laplace\, Louisiana. BassMonsterTiff appreciates live collaboration with other musicians\, but she also has a strong passion for creating original pieces of her own in her home studio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJamal Baptiste\nNew Orleans’s own Jamal Baptiste is a master percussionist and multi-instrumentalist who has traveled extensively throughout the world. DESCRIPTION:NOMA is excited to present a virtual Way of Tea demonstration led by Naomi Yoder (they/them)\, Japanese Way of Tea Practitioner\, Urasenke Lineage. This program will occur on Friday\, October 15\, at 6:30 pm. Advance registration is required\, and registration is free for all! \nThe demonstration will be filmed in NOMA’s Japanese art gallery\, where visitors can currently see Rural Occupations: Images of Work in Edo-Period Art. \nVideography and streaming services for this program are provided by MAPL. \nREGISTER TODAY! \nAbout Naomi Yoder\nNaomi has been a student of the Urasenke Way of Tea since 2009. After attending a demonstration at the Japanese teahouse in the Japanese Garden at the Seattle Arboretum\, Naomi became drawn to the ritual and the incredible complexity of the “simple” act of making a delicious bowl of tea. Naomi studied with Bonnie Mitchell Sensei in Seattle\, and then Meiya Wender Sensei in Marin County\, California\, before moving to the Gulf South. Now Naomi is a member of the Birmingham\, Alabama\, Tankokai (chapter of the Urasenke school)\, and studies with Ritsuko Asano Sensei. Naomi currently holds a Shikaden level license to study. \nNaomi has given Way of Tea demonstrations at various events\, including twice at Japan Fest in the New Orleans Museum of Art. They also serve on the Board of Directors of the Japan Society of New Orleans\, and are active in Mid-City Zen\, a Soto Buddhist practice center. Naomi has lived in the Gulf Coast and New Orleans region since 2013\, and is employed as Staff Scientist at the regional non-profit Healthy Gulf.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of music\, activities\, and exploration to celebrate the opening of the new exhibition Dawn DeDeaux: The Space Between Worlds\, on view October 22\, 2021–January 23\, 2022. This is the first comprehensive museum exhibition for the New Orleans–based multimedia artist whose work often investigates past and present to imagine possible futures. \nThis evening\, we invite you to explore the new exhibition\, enjoy an art-making activity\, and participate in an interpretive video-booth project. \nPublic tours of the exhibition will be led by Katie Pfohl\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art\, at 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! In addition to monthly book discussions\, the Book Club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. Books are selected in advance and planned for the entire year according to the exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the selected titles. DESCRIPTION:Wander through tales from creepy to strange in this brand-new look at some very old fables written by NOLA Project ensemble member Brittany N. Williams. Meet magical aunties\, too-clever wolves\, wicked stepmothers\, foolish devils\, and determined ghosts on a winding tour of five stories pulled from European and African American fairy tales and folklore. \nThis outdoor play is the perfect way to explore the Besthoff Sculpture Garden while experiencing live theatre that is bold\, fun\, family-friendly\, and safe. Come and wind the trail of tales with us this fall! \nPURCHASE TICKETS \nPerformance Information\nTickets are $35 for adults\, $25 for NOMA members\, and $20 for those under the age of 21. \nGates will open at 6:15 pm pm and each show will begin at 7:00 pm\, unless otherwise specified. Jones and Angelle use art as a tool to influence positive action and impartial respect for all life. They indulge the art(s) of music\, spoken word\, visual art\, dance\, culinary art\, leadership\, altruism\, and reciprocation to spread their message of egality and civility. \n\n\n\n\nKelly Love Jones\nJones’s artistic\, creative\, and cultural work is centered at the heart of healing\, empowerment\, and forgiveness. She likes to call her music “New Orleans Swag” because it is influenced by and mixes in the traditional rhythms of the Second Line\, R&B\, hip-hop\, and folk. Jones’s music also celebrates legendary artists and their traditions\, like Deacon John and Allen Toussaint\, who through their musicality and songwriting made available New Orleans’ soulful and spirit-filled culture\, the bayou landscape\, and its colorful heritage to people around the world. Jones’s music is a good bowl of gumbo\, mixing in all these traditions to produce songs that honor love\, well-being\, ancestry\, family\, tradition\, and good times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLakeba Angelle\nCo-producer Lakeba Angelle is a chef\, dancer\, traveler\, educator\, speaker\, consultant\, writer\, and poet. She’s a well-respected liaison in the artist community in many rights\, and her heart is sincere. Described as an “aggregator of resources\, regarding financial matters in particular\, Lakeba’s knowledge and agility in that arena has more often than not made the difference between success or failure of a venture. Lakeba brings a degree of poise and integrity to every project she’s connected with\, that it automatically helps improve the business posture of the artist moving forward” (Lilli Lewis Project). Angelle is a cum laude graduate of Tulane University and a NOWFE bronze medalist.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTiffany Morris\nBassMonsterTiff\, guru of the bass guitar\, has been mastering for more than two decades. She is a graduate of Xavier University and was born in Slidell\, Louisiana. Tiffany has shared many stages with acclaimed artists such as Ellis Marsalis\, Kelly Love Jones\, Joy Clark\, and Cyril Neville’s Swamp Funk Band. BassMonsterTiff is also the resident bassist at Beacon Light Church of Laplace\, Louisiana. BassMonsterTiff appreciates live collaboration with other musicians\, but she also has a strong passion for creating original pieces of her own in her home studio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJamal Batiste\nNew Orleans’s own Jamal Batiste is a master percussionist and multi-instrumentalist who has traveled extensively throughout the world. He has captivated audiences in the USA\, the Caribbean\, South Africa\, Morocco\, Japan\, Ireland\, Scotland\, France\, and England with his star-studded performances in rock\, funk\, soul\, gospel\, hip-hop\, and R&B. Batiste is also a songwriter and recording engineer and holds an independent record label\, Jam-All Pro Music Group.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrew Mosby\nDrew Mosby is a dedicated guitarist\, vocalist\, and harmonicist composing original music and playing with local bands like Coin Coin\, Tetrad\, and Kelly Love Jones. Drew also spends much of his time sound engineering at live shows\, a skill he brought to New Orleans 14 years ago when he moved from his hometown in Iowa. Private guitar instruction is also a mastered skill of his\, as he continues to fine tune the artistry of many young musicians.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNana Sula Janet Evans\nNana Sula Janet Evans is a priestess\, artist\, author\, singer and performer.  She is founding priestess of the Temple of Light – Ile de Coin-Coin in the Musicians Village which is a temple for the elevation of all souls. She is also author and producer of the book and CD project entitled Spirit of the Orisha.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSha’Condria “iCon” Sibley\nSha’Condria “iCon” Sibley is an Alexandria\, Louisiana\, native and long-time New Orleans–based poet\, writer\, and artist of many mediums. In the words of its discoverer\, the image of Christ as savior of the world is “the rarest thing on the planet.” Its $450 million sale price also makes it the world’s most expensive painting. \nFor two centuries\, art dealers had searched in vain for the Holy Grail of art history: a portrait of Christ as the Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci. Many similar paintings of greatly varying quality had been executed by Leonardo’s assistants in the early 16th century. But where was the original by the master himself? In November 2017\, Christie’s auction house announced they had it. SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art 2021: Enduring Care
DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans Museum of Art is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2021 by presenting ENDURING CARE\, a video program highlighting strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. The program features newly commissioned work by Katherine Cheairs\, Cristóbal Guerra\, Danny Kilbride\, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey\, Beto Pérez\, Steed Taylor\, and J Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project. \nFrom histories of harm reduction and prison activism to the long-term effects of HIV medication\, ENDURING CARE centers stories of collective care\, mutual aid\, and solidarity while pointing to the negligence of governments and nonprofits. The program’s title suggests a dual meaning\, honoring the perseverance and commitment of care workers yet also addressing the potential for harm from medications and healthcare providers. ENDURING CARE disrupts the assumption that an epidemic can be solved with pharmaceuticals alone\, recasting community work as a lasting form of medicine. \nDrop by NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts anytime between 10 am and 5 pm on Wednesday\, December 1\, to view the video program. This program is included with museum admission\, and on Wednesdays\, Louisiana residents receive free admission\, courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nReserve Tickets \n\nDive into the following discussion guide to further investigate the topics\, themes\, and ideas explored in ENDURING CARE. \nDownload \n\nAbout the Films\nKatherine Cheairs\, Voices at the Gate\nVoices at the Gate juxtaposes the bucolic landscapes inhabited by women’s prisons with archival and contemporary audio recordings of poems\, essays\, and interviews produced by women of color in the early 19990s at the intersection of incarceration and HIV & AIDS activism. \nKatherine “Kat” Cheairs is a filmmaker\, educator\, curator\, activist and community artist. Kat’s areas of interest and research include: HIV & AIDS; visual culture; media arts therapy; community arts; and\, critical race theory in art education. She is a co-curator of Metanoia: Transformation Through AIDS Archives and Activism\, an archival exhibition focusing on the contributions of Black cis women\, transwomen of color\, and women of color actvists on HIV/AIDS activism from the early 1990s to the present. Kat is a member of the What Would An HIV Doula Do? Collective and the producer and director of the documentary\, Ending Silence\, Shame & Stigma: HIV/AIDS in the African American Family. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Production from the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. Kat’s new project\, In This House\, currently in development\, is a video installation exploring HIV/AIDS narratives through the Black body. \nCristóbal Guerra\, Nobleza(s) de Sangre\nTwo fragmented interviews with artists living with HIV in Puerto Rico mediate an audiovisual invocation of the late Boricua poet Manuel Ramos Otero who passed away from complications of the virus in 1990. Guerra sets out to translate work Manuel deemed untranslatable\, investigating the ongoing passions that informed his work. \nCristóbal Guerra is an interdisciplinary artist from Puerto Rico. Their work currently combines experimental video\, documentary film\, language justice and text to explore ideas of home\, el caribe\, queerness and belonging. \nDanny Kilbride\, The Mersey Model\nDanny Kilbride interviews Professor John Ashton\, a public health official who helped institute the Mersey Model of Harm Reduction in Liverpool in the mid-80s\, the first government-funded needle exchange program in the UK. \nDanny Kilbride is a community filmmaker based in Liverpool UK. He is the founding Director at Thinking Film\, a not-for-profit organization that exists to provide marginalized communities with a voice and tell stories that challenge the way people see the world.  \nAbdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey\, #Medstrike: Confronting the Non-Profit Industrial Complex\nA chronicle of Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad’s 2017 medication strike against the Mazzoni Center\, a LGBT health clinic in Philadelphia\, and the direct action campaign by the Black and Brown Workers Cooperative that preceded it \nAbdul-Aliy A. Muhammad is a Philadelphia born writer\, organizer\, and co-founder of the Black and Brown Workers Co-op. In their work\, they often trouble ideas of medical surveillance\, bodily autonomy\, and Blackness.  \nBeto Pérez\, In the Future\nIn the Future tells the stories of people living with HIV in Mexico who have been unable to access treatment because of government corruption and widespread theft and looting of medication. \nBeto Pérez is a documentary filmmaker and television producer working in Tlaxcala\, Mexico. He is the co-founder and president of the cultural organization Coarco (Colectivo Arte Contemporáneo). In 2018\, his docu-series “Tlaxcala Indigena” received an honorable mention from the National Journalism Prize. \nSteed Taylor\, I Am a Long-Term AIDS Survivor\nThrough a chorus of voices\, Steed Taylor will explore the difficulties of being a long-term AIDS survivor and the unexpected health problems facing many senior survivors. \nSteed Taylor‘s art includes public works as well as art for gallery settings. Shown nationally and internationally\, solo shows include University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, Ambrosino Gallery in Miami and Il Ponte Contemporanea in Rome\, Italy. Recent commissions for his public art include Boston\, Chicago\, Washington DC\, Arlington VA\, New York City\, New Orleans and West Palm Beach as well as the North Carolina Museum of Art\, Duke University\, York College/CUNY\, Florida State University and Columbus College of Art & Design. His art has been discussed in publications as varied as Art In America to Playboy Magazine. \nJ Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project\, 滴水希望 (Hope Drops)\nA collaborative video project made with women living in Taiwan who use their cameras to process stress and stigma\, and to share their experiences living with HIV.  \nJ Triangular is an independent curator\, experimental filmmaker\, and multimedia poet. Colombia born\, Taiwan based. Graduated in film studies and screenwriting at TAI University School of Arts\, Madrid\, Spain. She received her master’s degree in experimental documentary at the Cinema and Audiovisual School of Catalonia\, Spain. Her work consistently addresses themes such as community identity\, self-empowerment\, care practices\, and promoting communication and solidarity.
