DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! In addition to monthly virtual book discussions\, the Book Club meets periodically in person for curatorial programs related to the book selections. \nBooks are selected in advance and planned for the entire year according to the exhibition schedule. The Nightcrawler King: Memoirs of an Art Museum Curator is a narrative of Fagaly’s life told in two parts: first\, his childhood experiences and\, second\, his transformation into an adult art museum curator and administrator in Louisiana. \nOffering a rare and revealing inside look at how the art world works\, Fagaly documents his fifty years of experience of work—unusually spent at a single institution\, the New Orleans Museum of Art. During this period\, he played an active role in the discovery and appreciation of new areas of art\, particularly African\, self-taught\, and avant-garde contemporary. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on sculptor Enrique Alférez’s art\, life\, and enduring influence in New Orleans. Katie Bowler Young\, author of Enrique Alférez: Sculptor\, and Tlalóc Alférez\, daughter of the preeminent sculptor\, will talk about the artist’s legacy in front of his large-scale relief sculpture Symbols of Communication in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts. \nThe program will open with remarks by Young\, followed by a discussion that considers the artist’s life across geographies\, his Indigenous Nahua heritage\, and international outlook. They are available for purchase directly from our partner vendors. \n\n\n\n\n\nBrad Walker & Extended\nAn ongoing collaboration between two of the most compelling forces on the New Orleans creative music scene: Brad Walker\, with a decade of award-nominated and nationally-reviewed records\, creating alongside Extended\, which features three of the leading lights of the jazz scene in New Orleans: Oscar Rossignoli (piano)\, Matt Booth (bass)\, and Brad Webb (drums). This project is the result of extensive work together during the Covid-19 shutdown\, the culmination of which is a brand-new set of unique and compelling original music\, developed together in isolation during some of the darkest months of the pandemic. \n\n\n\n\n\nMonica Kelly\nMonica Rose Kelly is an analog and digital artist offering fine art\, murals and illustration through her business of 10 years\, Monica Kelly Studio. She has worked extensively within the music community of New Orleans creating visual art for bands\, festivals and music venues. Her new modality of live digital improv painting is a groundbreaking innovation in the performance arts\, and she is thrilled to collaborate with some of our city’s best jazz musicians in presenting this new form of expression.\n\n\n\n\nHanna Mignano Trio\nThe Hanna Mignano Trio is a jazz manouche/New Orleans jazz band that combines their passion for music with a love for urban exploration. Led by violinist/composer Hanna Mignano\, the group is heavily rooted in the gypsy jazz tradition in the style of Django Reinhardt’s Quintette de Hot Club du France\, while drawing on such eclectic inspiration as New Orleans trad\, Western swing\, alchemy and the occult. When not performing at the usual haunts\, they can be found creating musical sorcery within the forbidden\, forgotten\, forsaken corners of the city. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoseph Darensbourg\nA performer of ethnic folk musics\, Joseph Darensbourg is a singer\, violinist\, and percussionist member of Les Cenelles ensemble\, which specializes in music inspired by resistance and protest poetry and Les Cenelles Gens de Couleur Libres\, civil rights activists opposing the Code Noir during US Reconstruction. Joseph focuses on the Bayou Ballads plantation songs (1840s–80s). A bookbinder by trade—trained at the oldest bookbindery in the US (Harcourt\, Boston)—Joseph is also a visual art alum of NOCCA\, as well as a member of the oldest early music ensemble in the America\, New Orleans Musica da Camera (founded in 1965\, as was Joseph). \nLearn more about Creative Assembly Cohort member Joseph Darensbourg.\n\n\n\n\nMahmoud Chouki\nNOMA is pleased to work with internationally renowned multi-instrumentalist and composer Mahmoud Chouki\, who will organize musical performances for each First Fridays program in collaboration with museum staff. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFirst Fridays at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. DESCRIPTION:The NOLA Project returns to the Besthoff Sculpture Garden with all-new production Treasure Island. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale\, this interpretation is directed by A.J. Allegra and written by A.J. Allegra\, James Bartelle\, and Alex Martinez Wallace. \nThe Story\nJim Hawkins and his mother Ruth are simple innkeepers in a quiet seaside English village. All that changes following the surprise visit of a mysterious sailor on the run from a one-legged pirate named Silver. The theme for May 2022 is “Now.” \nAbout Hannah Chalew\nHannah Chalew is an artist\, educator\, and environmental activist raised and currently working in New Orleans. She received her BA from Brandeis University in 2009 and her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2016. Chalew has exhibited widely around New Orleans and has shown around the country at Laumeier Sculpture Park\, St. Louis\, MO; Dieu Donné\, New York\, NY; Asheville Museum of Art\, Asheville\, NC; Minnesota Center for the Book Arts; and other venues. Her work is held in the collections of the City of New Orleans and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Her work is included in two creative atlases by writer and activist Rebecca Solnit\, Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas\, co-authored with Rebecca Snedeker\, and Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas\, co-authored with Joshua Jelly-Schapiro. In 2021\, she received the Monroe Fellowship Research Grant to create ink from fossil fuel pollution in collaboration with fence-line communities in Southern Louisiana.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Queen Nefertari’s Egypt\, Pass It On hosts its monthly open mic and showcase at NOMA in the courtyard featuring artist John T. Scott’s Spirit Gates. \nIn collaboration with the All About Love Education Studio and the Queens of the Washitaw Nation\, this program is the culmination of a Creative Assembly Connector Residency led by Brit Lindsey and Pass It On that featured weekly workshops for youth led by a range of New Orleans artists including poets\, fashion designers\, visual artists\, and Black Masking Indian Queens. These workshops included artist-led design prompts which utilized the medium of sewing as a community responsibility and cathartic artistic ritual. \nJoin us in shining light on and basking in the light of these young artists\, alongside live performances from other artists. We celebrate the connection between sewing and connection to culture with Big Queen Ausettua along with the visual design brilliance of Lana Meyon and students from Lawerence D. Crocker. We also have a very special lineup featuring Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley\, Chasity Hunter\, Naomi Daugherty\, Akilah Toney\, and Preach; and music from Charm Taylor\, Bobbi Rae\, and The Vibe. Hurricane Katrina and a full scholarship to play basketball at Tulane University drew her to New Orleans from Atlanta\, Georgia in 2006\, and she’s held permanent residence ever since. \nShe is the owner of Master Minds Private Tutoring\, a New Orleans-based tutoring service that caters to Children of HUE and members of the LGBTQIA+ Community. She recently founded the HUEMan Development Project. This work and the inspiration for the creation of this nonprofit is rooted in community responsibility\, self-actualization\, and entrepreneurial equity in New Orleans. Brit is particularly interested in assisting children of HUE along their journey of identity exploration\, through intergenerational mentorship and community service.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pass It On\nPass It On is an art and performance series dedicated to the advancement and preservation of New Orleans’s multicultural artisan community\, through the integration of visual art\, music\, and spoken word. \nCreated in 2008\, the series sought to reestablish New Orleans’s cultural footprint post-Katrina. SUMMARY:Food as Medicine: New Orleans Cuisine with Healthy Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:As one of the culinary capitals of the world\, New Orleans’s cuisine is one of the city’s most notable attributes. While many of these dishes are world renowned\, their nutrition and healthiness is sometimes compromised during their creation. Lower 9th Ward native Courtney Clark has dedicated much of her multidisciplinary creative practice to community food justice organizing in an attempt to combat many of the diet-related diseases that exist within many of New Orleans’s communities. \nClark is a member of NOMA’s Creative Assembly Cohort and will lead a food demonstration in the amphitheater of NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden on June 8 from 5 to 7 pm. During this workshop\, attendees will learn how to make healthy alternatives to well-known New Orleans dishes and also experience a performance from Big Chief Romeo Bougere of the 9th Ward Hunters. \nThis event is free and open to the public. The first 50 registrants will be guaranteed a tasting of the food made by Clark during the demonstration. \nRegister Now \nPlease note that this is an outdoor event with seating on the grass in the amphitheater. We welcome bringing your own folding chair or blanket to sit on. \nAbout Courtney Clark\nCourtney Clark is a native of the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans and has worked as an artist\, school teacher\, community food justice organizer\, and mental health advocate\, throughout her eclectic career. Between 2015 and 2020\, Clark served as Programming Coordinator for Backyard Gardeners Network (BGN)\, spearheading its Food As Medicine program—a 10-week health and nutrition workshop series for adults which focused on food as a primary source of healing. In 2016\, Clark was selected to serve as a U.S. delegate by Slow Food USA for the Terra Madre del Gusto Food conference in Turin\, Italy. NOLA.com recognized her as an Everyday Hero in 2017 and JJill and Food Network as an Inspired Woman for her work in 2020. DESCRIPTION:Join us at NOMA for a day of activities to celebrate Juneteenth—the annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States—and support the ongoing movement for justice\, equity\, and liberation. Come together for special programs\, performances\, guided tours\, and art-making activities for all ages. The program includes the music of Edmond Dédé\, Ernesto Lecuona\, and more! \n \nDetroit Brooks Sr. Trio\n11:00 am\nDetroit Brooks\, famed session and touring guitarist of the New Orleans music scene\, has the most recognizable face in the city. Often admired by guitarists world-wide\, Brooks’ laid-back demeanor masks one of the most heralded and sought-after performer\, songwriter\, and session men of our time. \nHe began his career at an early age\, touring with his famous family which includes his world-famous sister Juanita Brooks\, of “Juanita’s Gospel Express\,” as well as his acclaimed father\, George A. Brooks\, Sr.\, of the famous “Masonic Kings.” Like many accomplished guitarists\, Detroit mastered his craft on the road where the performances were “long\, free and continuous.” His skill\, technique and experience brought him quick recognition and the opportunity to play with gospel greats like Clarence Fountain & the Five Blind Boys\, Dorothy Norwood\, Reverend Ernest Franklin\, Albertina Walker\, Raymond Myles and The Rams and the famed Zion Harmonizers. \n \n  \nGuided Tours of Queen Nefertari’s Egypt\n10:30 am\, 1:00 pm\, and 3:30 pm\nJoin a tour of Queen Nefertari’s Egypt designed for all ages. Through grassroots efforts\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 from a day of unheeded military orders as the first celebration of “Juneteenth” a year later in 1866\, and it continues as a celebration for Black liberation across the country. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! SUMMARY:Lecture with Kara Cooney: Women and Power in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Kara Cooney\, author of When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt\, addresses questions of ancient social inequalities and how women negotiated their limited leadership roles. How was their power expressed when regularly cloaked by a man’s dominance? Were they able to rule “behind the throne”? How much of this ancient reality still touches us today? \nFollowing the lecture\, there will be a book signing with the author and attendees will have access to explore the special exhibition Queen Nefertari’s Egypt. \nTickets are $20 | $10 for NOMA members \nREGISTER NOW \nAbout Kara Cooney\nKara Cooney is a professor of Egyptology at UCLA and Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. Specializing in social history\, gender studies\, and economies in the ancient world\, she received her Ph.D. in Egyptology from Johns Hopkins University. In 2005\, she was co-curator of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Cooney produced a comparative archaeology television series\, titled Out of Egypt\, which aired in 2009 on the Discovery Channel and is available online. Her popular books include The Women Who Would Be King: Hatshepsut’s Rise to Power in Ancient Egypt\, When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt\, and The Good Kings: Absolute Power in Ancient Egypt and the Modern World.
