SUMMARY:NOMA Book Club Curatorial Program
DESCRIPTION:Join NOMA staff and fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art\, artists\, art museums\, NOMA’s collections and exhibitions. Our full 2018 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Most book club programs start promptly at noon\, but please arrive at 11:30 a.m. if you wish to bring a sack lunch or meet beforehand. NOMA will provide water and soft drinks. \nRSVP for the meetings you wish to attend so we can prepare the meeting space. \nPlease contact Sheila A. Cork at 504.658.4117 or scork@noma.org for information about joining the NOMA Book Club. \nNovember 2018 Selection\nMadame de Pompadour by Nancy Mitford \nNew York Review of Books Classics\, 2001. ISBN: 978-0940322653 \nWhen Madame de Pompadour became the mistress of Louis XV\, no one expected her to retain his affections for long. A member of the bourgeoisie rather than an aristocrat\, she was physically too cold for the carnal Bourbon king\, and had so many enemies that she could not travel publicly without risking a pelting of mud and stones. History has loved her little better. Nancy Mitford’s delightfully candid biography recreates the spirit of eighteenth-century Versailles with its love of pleasure and treachery. We learn that the Queen was a “bore\,” the Dauphin a “prig\,” and see France increasingly overcome with class conflict. With a fiction writer’s felicity\, Mitford restores the royal mistress and celebrates her as a survivor\, unsurpassed in “the art of living\,” who reigned as the most powerful woman in France for nearly twenty years. \nFriday\, November 9\, 12 – 1 pm | Curatorial Program with Kelsey Brosnan\, Curatorial Fellow for European Art

SUMMARY:JR X TIME: "The Gun Chronicles: A Story of America"
DESCRIPTION:This timely one-night-only installation in NOMA’s Great Hall is a collaboration between project between  JR Artist and TIME Magazine that seeks to facilitate an unbiased and honest conversation about gun control. Admission is free. \nABOUT “THE GUN CHRONICLES: A STORY OF AMERICA”\nIt’s a truly American story: 325 million people\, more than 265 million guns\, 35\,000 deaths a year and one 227-year-old constitutional right. To move beyond the familiar debate\, TIME partnered with JR\, an artist and photographer known for documenting social issues. In three U.S. cities profoundly affected by guns—Dallas\, St. Louis\, and Washington\, D.C.—the collaborative partners invited people to share their views\, describe their experiences\, and search for common ground. The project documents hunters and activists\, teachers and police officers\, parents and children. \nJR and his team created a live mural of each person featured in the project. Individuals were filmed in slow motion\, interacting with someone else in the mural\, creating a living artwork which vividly depicts the issue of gun rights and gun violence. Each side of the issue is represented by individuals and groups sharing their stories and visual interactions. On a broader level\, the live mural will be projected all around the U.S. and the project and made available to the public as a tool for gathering communities and creating meaningful dialogue. \nAbout the image: JR photographed 245 people to create as mural for the cover of the November 5\, 2018\, edition of TIME. To view the entire mural and learn more about “The Gun Chronicles\,” visit the project’s website.

SUMMARY:Under Three Things\, a performance by artist Cristina Molina in Ear to the Ground exhibition
DESCRIPTION:At select intervals throughout the run of the exhibition Ear to the Ground: Earth and Element in Contemporary Art\, New Orleans-based artist Cristina Molina will host a series of intimate guided tours of the exhibition in which she will assume the perspective of the earth\, personified. Drawing upon cultural mythologies of the underworld\, Molina will guide museum visitors through a whispered exploration of the exhibition in which the different artworks in the exhibition constitute the topography of an imagined subterranean landscape. Inspired by the classical myth of Persephone\, who was doomed to spend a third of the year in the underworld\, Molina reimagines this mythological figure as an empowered goddess who harnesses the earth as a place of primordial cultural emergence. Spanning video installation\, performance\, photography\, sculpture and textile design\, Molina’s work privileges female protagonists to explore themes related to origins\, heritage\, and personal mythology\, and how they work in concert with natural and urban landscapes. \n
