DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art\, artists\, art museums\, NOMA’s collections and exhibitions. Our full 2019 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Most book club programs start promptly at noon\, but please arrive at 11:30 a.m. if you wish to bring a sack lunch or meet beforehand. Da Vinci’s interests were even more divergent than previously known\, and Isaacson’s empathetic and deeply researched portrait illustrates how da Vinci willed himself to genius through endless curiosity and a creativity that sometimes crossed over into fantasy. Much like Isaacson’s previous subjects of Ben Franklin and Steve Jobs\, da Vinci was a polymath—he was passionate about art\, science\, nature\, and technology\, and he never stopped questioning\, practicing\, or experimenting. For those who purchased admission for the April 18 concert\, tickets will remain valid for the new date\, or contact the NOMA Learning and Engagement Department for a refund at 504.658.4128 | education@noma.org. \nLouisiana-born saxophonist\, artist\, photographer\, and composer Dickie Landry will perform one of his legendary site-specific SOLO concerts in tribute to the work of Keith Sonnier and Tina Girouard. In his 60-minute performance in NOMA’s Great Hall\, Landry will play the tenor saxophone to explore the textures and abstract layers of sound within NOMA’s iconic architecture. There will be no seating\, and the audience is encouraged to move around freely throughout all levels of the museum during the performance. \n$15 nonmembers | $10 members\nPURCHASE ADVANCE TICKETS \nABOUT DICKIE LANDRY\nBorn in Cecilia\, Louisiana\, in 1938\, Richard “Dickie” Landry began his musical training at the age of six when he joined the St. Joseph Catholic Church Choir singing Gregorian Chant for six years seven days a week. Landry picked up the saxophone at age ten and continued the journey that would take him places far removed from the small town in St. Martin Parish where he was raised. After attending what is presently known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he majored in music education\, Landry taught for two years in the rural community of Chataignier in St. Landry parish. Restless and tired of playing in a blue-eyed soul band\, The Swing Kings\, in 1969 Landry moved to New York City to broaden his musical horizons. The avant-garde art scene in New York City was about to explode after a period of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Landry soon fell in with a crowd of artists\, musicians\, dancers\, and theater people that included Keith Sonnier\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Gordon Matta-Clark\, Robert Smithson\, Michael Heizer\, Walter de Maria\, Steve Reich\, Philip Glass\, Laurie Anderson\, Chuck Close\, Robert Wilson\, and others who are now considered visionaries in their respective fields. He became part of this circle and emerged as a renowned photographer\, noted for his documentation of the New York art scene in the 1970s. \nIn addition to Landry’s solo career\, he has collaborated with other composers\, artists and choreographers. In 1969 he was a founding member of the original group that formed the Philip Glass Ensemble and performed with the ensemble till 1981. He was on all concerts\, tours and recordings of that period including Einstein on the Beach\, an opera by Robert Wilson and Glass\, which is widely credited as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century. He has also worked with David Byrne of the Talking Heads on the Speaking in Tongues (Slippery People) album for which he received a Gold Record Award. In 1984 Landry began collaboration with Laurie Anderson at the Next Wave Festival in Set/Reset with choreographer Trisha Brown and artist Robert Rauschenberg. This collaboration continued with his inclusion in Anderson’s Mister Heartbreak tour of America and Japan. These efforts culminated in the feature film production of Home of the Brave and the CD of the same name. Landry has collaborated with artists Keith Sonnier\, Lawrence Weiner\, Chuck Close and Richard Serra and received commissioned works from choreographers Babs Case\, Trisha Brown\, Deborah Hay and Jane Comfort.

SUMMARY:Blue Muse Book Signing with Timothy Duffy
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Timothy Duffy\, whose tintype portraits of American roots musicians are on view in the exhibition Blue Muse\, will sign his companion book of the same title at the Museum Shop from 1 – 2 pm on Wednesday\, May 8. Russell Lord\, NOMA’s Freeman Family Curator of Photography\, wrote the foreword. Arrive early for a Gallery Talk at noon in the exhibition space with Duffy and Lord. New Orleans-based musicians Little Freddie King and Alabama Slim\, pictured in the book\, are also expected at the book signing. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nThe tintype is rooted in more than 150 years of photographic method. In this collection of extraordinary portraits\, Duffy brings new vitality to this old form\, capturing powerful images of musicians who represent the roots of American music. These American blues\, jazz\, and folk artists are living expressions of a cultural legacy\, made and remade by everyday people and passed down through generations. In the hands of the people in Duffy’s portraits\, centuries-old traditions find new expression in this digital millennium. Likewise\, Duffy’s photographic techniques fuse old forms and the original collodion wet plates with modern lighting. In this collaboration between photographer and artist\, music and image meet around a history of struggle\, adaptability\, and creativity. It is this ethos that Duffy captures in his tintypes. Blue Muse is jointly published by the New Orleans Museum of Art and the University of North Carolina Press.

DESCRIPTION:The NOLA Project returns to the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden for yet another crowd-pleasing outdoor theatrical production in partnership with NOMA. \nThe Henchman: A Shakespeare Story\, an imagined sequel by playwright Michael Aaron Santos to A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, reveals the true story of Jacob\, the little changeling boy who Oberon and Titania quarreled over many years ago. Unexpectedly learning that he the long-lost son of the King of India\, Jacob discovers he must now flee his fairy-world homestead to escape the pursuit of Esau\, Jacob’s warmongering brother\, who is hellbent on dispatching Jacob\, and claiming the throne. Oberon and Titania are forced to send Jacob with his faithful friend Puck to Greece to enlist the aid of Theseus and Hippolyta in an adventurous comedic sequel to the Bard’s timeless tale. \nThe Henchman runs Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Sundays at 7 pm from May 8 to 26. All seating is bring-your-own. Food trucks will be available at all performances as well as a fully stocked bar. No outside food or drink is allowed inside the Sculpture Garden other than food truck and NOMA bar items. This production will be staged in two locations; Act I will occur in the oak grove in the back of the current garden and Act II will move to the front pine grove during the intermission.  \nRain Plan: For productions canceled due to inclement weather\, we will notify all ticketed patrons no later than 4pm. Patrons will then receive instructions via email on how they may reschedule their tickets for another performance or request a refund. All ticket purchases for any production that is rained-out mid performance are final. \nAdmission: Adults $25 | NOMA Members $18 | Students with ID $15 | Children (5 – 17) $12 \nPURCHASE TICKETS \nThe Henchman is made possible by a grant from the New Orleans Theatre Association.

SUMMARY:Opening of Besthoff Sculpture Garden Expansion
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to visit NOMA’s newly expanded Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, opening on Wednesday\, May 15\, at 11 am. Food trucks will be parked in the vicinity from 11 am to 5:30 pm. \nThe six-acre addition features 26 new works by artists working primarily in the 21st century. The expansion\, which broke ground in December 2017\, builds on the success of the museum’s existing five-acre Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, widely regarded as one of the top sculpture gardens in the world. The existing site is home to 64 sculptures from renowned artists from the 19th century to the present.  \nArtists featured in the expansion include Larry Bell\, Tony Cragg\, Johan Creten\, Katharina Fritsch\, Frank Gehry\, Jeppe Hein\, Georg Herold\, Thomas Houseago\, Shirazeh Houshiary\, Baltasar Lobo\, Robert Longo\, Gerold Miller\, Beverly Pepper\, Pedro Reyes\, George Rickey\, Ursula van Rydingsvard\, Sean Scully\, Yinka Shonibare\, Frank Stella\, Hank Willis Thomas\, Bernar Venet\, and Fred Wilson. A work by Ugo Rondinone will be installed in the garden in late 2019. SUMMARY:The NOLA Project presents The Henchman: A Shakespeare Story
DESCRIPTION:The NOLA Project returns to the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden for yet another crowd-pleasing outdoor theatrical production in partnership with NOMA. \nThe Henchman: A Shakespeare Story\, an imagined sequel by playwright Michael Aaron Santos to A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, reveals the true story of Jacob\, the little changeling boy who Oberon and Titania quarreled over many years ago. Unexpectedly learning that he the long-lost son of the King of India\, Jacob discovers he must now flee his fairy-world homestead to escape the pursuit of Esau\, Jacob’s warmongering brother\, who is hellbent on dispatching Jacob\, and claiming the throne. Oberon and Titania are forced to send Jacob with his faithful friend Puck to Greece to enlist the aid of Theseus and Hippolyta in an adventurous comedic sequel to the Bard’s timeless tale. \nThe Henchman runs Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Sundays at 7 pm from May 8 to 31. All seating is bring-your-own. Food trucks will be available at all performances as well as a fully stocked bar. No outside food or drink is allowed inside the Sculpture Garden other than food truck and NOMA bar items. This production will be staged in two locations; Act I will occur in the oak grove in the back of the current garden and Act II will move to the front pine grove during the intermission.  \nRain Plan: For productions canceled due to inclement weather\, we will notify all ticketed patrons no later than 4pm. Patrons will then receive instructions via email on how they may reschedule their tickets for another performance or request a refund. All ticket purchases for any production that is rained-out mid performance are final. \nAdmission: Adults $25 | NOMA Members $18 | Students with ID $15 | Children (5 – 17) $12 \nPURCHASE TICKETS \nThe Henchman is made possible by a grant from the New Orleans Theatre Association.

In Atlanta\, Williams flourished in his craft\, graduating in 1994 and producing solo exhibitions\, participating in several group exhibitions and completing several public art projects. In 2013\, Williams mounted a solo exhibition at the George Ohr Museum in Biloxi\, Mississippi\, and was a recipient of the Joan Mitchell NOLA Studio Artist Residence Program. He was also selected to participate in the 2014 State of the Art exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville\, Arkansas. He collaborated with a team of artists to create an interactive work of art in NOMA’s Creative Corner that addresses cultural appropriation. \nABOUT KRISTINA KAY ROBINSON\nKristina Kay Robinson is a writer\, curator\, and visual artist born and raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Her written\, visual\, and curatorial work centers the intellectual geographies of Black\, Afro-Indigenous\, and diasporic peoples and interrogates the modern and ancient connections between world communities while examining the impact of globalization\, militarism\, and surveillance on society and their intersections with contemporary pop culture. \nABOUT CHAKRA DANCE THEATRE\nChakra Dance Theatre  is committed to the preservation\, presentation\, and teaching of African Diaspora cultures. With an emphasis on Haitian Vodou\, the the dance theatre strives to obliterate the negative connotations associated with Vodou and emphasize the beauty of a culture that began in Africa\, travelled to Haiti\, and landed in New Orleans.\nABOUT HATIANOLA\nThe goal of Haitianola is to amplify the connection between New Orleans and Haiti by facilitating artistic and cultural exchanges. Haitianola fosters relationship building between New Orleanians and Haitians to encourage personal and financial investment in the well-being and progress of Haitian artists and cultural bearers. \nABOUT CLIFF NOTEZ\n\nAward-winning musician\, filmmaker\, and organizer\, Cliff Notez’ art is a continuous exploration of self. Rooted in hip hop\, his art tackles the political and the personal\, exploring the intimate consequences of a society where black bodies are easily ignored\, forgotten\, or disregarded. His debut solo album “When the Sidewalk Ends” was released in 2017 and is available on Spotify and Apple Music. In 2018\, Cliff Notez won the Boston Music Award for “New Artist of The Year.” \nABOUT WINDOWS 98\nWin Butler (DJ Windows 98) is is a singer\, songwriter\, musician\, multi-instrumentalist\, and DJ. SUMMARY:The NOLA Project presents The Henchman: A Shakespeare Sequel
DESCRIPTION:The NOLA Project returns to the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden for yet another crowd-pleasing outdoor theatrical production in partnership with NOMA. \nThe Henchman: A Shakespeare Story\, an imagined sequel by playwright Michael Aaron Santos to A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, reveals the true story of Jacob\, the little changeling boy who Oberon and Titania quarreled over many years ago. Unexpectedly learning that he the long-lost son of the King of India\, Jacob discovers he must now flee his fairy-world homestead to escape the pursuit of Esau\, Jacob’s warmongering brother\, who is hellbent on dispatching Jacob\, and claiming the throne. Oberon and Titania are forced to send Jacob with his faithful friend Puck to Greece to enlist the aid of Theseus and Hippolyta in an adventurous comedic sequel to the Bard’s timeless tale. \nThe Henchman runs Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Sundays at 7 pm from May 8 to 31. All seating is bring-your-own. Food trucks will be available at all performances as well as a fully stocked bar. No outside food or drink is allowed inside the Sculpture Garden other than food truck and NOMA bar items. This production will be staged in two locations; Act I will occur in the oak grove in the back of the current garden and Act II will move to the front pine grove during the intermission.  \nRain Plan: For productions canceled due to inclement weather\, we will notify all ticketed patrons no later than 4pm. Patrons will then receive instructions via email on how they may reschedule their tickets for another performance or request a refund. All ticket purchases for any production that is rained-out mid performance are final. \nAdmission: Adults $25 | NOMA Members $18 | Students with ID $15 | Children (5 – 17) $12 \nPURCHASE TICKETS \n\n \nThe Henchman is made possible by a grant from the New Orleans Theatre Association.

DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art\, artists\, art museums\, NOMA’s collections and exhibitions. Our full 2019 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOn Thursday\, May 30\, from 12 – 1 pm\, author Anne Boyd Rioux will discuss her book Meg\, Jo\, Beth\, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters. This event is planned in conjunction with the June book selection of The Other Alcott\, A Novel by Elise Hooper\, a fictionalized biographical account of Louisa May Alcott’s sister\, May Alcott. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Most book club programs start promptly at noon\, but please arrive at 11:30 a.m. if you wish to bring a sack lunch or meet beforehand. Driven by an “addictive yearning” for deep connection\, this stellar trio explores often overlooked twentieth-century repertoire from disparate traditions in an inside/outside kind of way – and with great sensitivity\, communication\, and fire. \nFor Susanne Ortner\, a desire to find the similar in the different has lead to an exploration of a myriad of musical traditions\, as well as collaborations and international concert tours with numerous musicians — mostly in the intimate duo or trio format — such as Belgian Gypsy icon Tcha Limberger\, accordionist/pianist Alan Bern\, multi-instrumentalist Vince Giordano\, pianist Tom Roberts and many others. She was the founder of the German klezmer quartet Sing Your Soul\, and collaborates with American klezmer and jazz musicians\, mostly in the intimate duo and trio format. \nNahum Thelonious Zdybel is a New Orleans-based guitarist\, improviser\, and composer who restlessly shifts roles between innovative explorer of improvised music\, creative indie rock sideman\, and ardent revivalist of early jazz styles and repertoire. Attracted to musical settings that are intimate and sincere\, Nahum deploys a playful\, hyper-sensitive approach to re-imagine material from disparate musical traditions as baffling combustions of spontaneity and subtle cleverness. Correspondingly at home amongst jazz tunes\, free improvisations\, original works\, and early twentieth-century American music\, Nahum is an inventive musician who regards with equal fondness and irreverence his relationship with early jazz\, hardcore punk\, and unstructured improvisation. \nComposer/Double bassist/bandleader James Singleton has been ubiquitous on the New Orleans music scene for more than forty years. He has performed\, toured\, and recorded in many styles from the earliest New Orleans traditions to R&B\, blues\, and all imagined types of jazz to punk rock and the avant-garde. The New Orleans traditions he most adheres to are invention\, making it new\, and making it deep. \nABOUT YOU ARE HERE: A BRIEF HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND PLACE\nYou Are Here: A Brief History of Photography and Place both embraces and challenges the photograph’s role as a faithful record of place\, examining photography’s successes and failures in rendering\, and sharing\, fragments of the world. Drawn almost exclusively from NOMA’s permanent collection\, the exhibition traces a history of photography from the origins of the medium to the present. Throughout\, You Are Here explores photographs of place\, photographs in place\, and photographs about place\, in the hopes of leading us to think more deeply about how photography mediates our experience of the world and other people in it. \nABOUT KEITH SONNIER: UNTIL TODAY\nNow in its final days\, closing Sunday\, June 2\, NOMA hosts the first comprehensive museum survey for Keith Sonnier\, a pioneering figure in conceptual\, post-minimal\, video and performance art of the late 1960s. Born in Grand Mamou\, Louisiana\, in 1941\, Sonnier was one of the first artists to incorporate light into sculpture: an innovation that forms the foundation of his subsequent work. \nFriday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. SUMMARY:Mindfulness Intensive Course
DESCRIPTION:Join a Mindfulness course under the instruction of Dr. Jayshee Rao for two days\, Saturday\, June 1\, and Sunday\, June 2\, from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm. Mindfulness is defined as a method of experiencing the present moment with open curiosity\, without judgment\, and with a willingness to be with what is. The course\, which is usually offered over eight weeks\, is condensed to two days for a weekend intensive\, in order to facilitate better attendance and engagement by the participants. \n$60 for NOMA members | $80 for nonmembers | Registration Required\nREGISTER NOW\n  \nThe two-day course will teach skills to help individuals \n\nCope with the stress\, pain\, and challenges of everyday life\nDeal with disturbing events with grace and composure\nBe present and alive in the here and now\n\nThrough guided meditation and brief exercises\, participants will learn to develop mindfulness that will help them experience the present moment during everyday activities. Although no specific outcome is promised\, participants typically report feeling more focused\, more “in-tune” with themselves and others. In addition\, research has shown significant beneficial effects in dealing with stress\, anxiety\, depression\, high blood pressure\, chronic pain\, and diabetes. \nDr. Jayashree Rao is a retired pediatric endocrinologist\, who spent thirty years teaching\, researching\, and practicing medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center and Children’s Hospital. For the past several years\, Dr. Rao has practiced and led others in practicing mindfulness\, employing techniques learned in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course offered by Dr. Dave Potter. \nFor more information\, please email education@noma.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join NOMA’s docents for a free guided tour of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Mondays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays\, weather dependent\, at noon. Sited on ten acres adjacent to the museum\, the garden contains more than sixty works by renowned sculptors placed among a picturesque mature grove of pine\, magnolia\, and moss-draped live oak trees bisected by a lagoon. Represented sculptors include Pierre Auguste Renoir\, Rene Magritte\, Henry Moore\, Isamu Noguchi\, George Rodrigue\, and Robert Indiana\, among others. Meet at the gates to the garden\, which offers free admission year-round.
