Inspired by the classical myth of Persephone\, who was doomed to spend a third of the year in the underworld\, Molina reimagines this mythological figure as an empowered goddess who harnesses the earth as a place of primordial cultural emergence. Spanning video installation\, performance\, photography\, sculpture and textile design\, Molina’s work privileges female protagonists to explore themes related to origins\, heritage\, and personal mythology\, and how they work in concert with natural and urban landscapes. \nFriday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of National Poetry Month\, the New Orleans Museum of Art is offering a free poetry workshop on Saturday\, April 6\, for students in grades 8–12\, led by Louisiana Poet Laureate Jack B. Bedell. Workshop participants will tour the museum and select a work of art that inspires or engages them. Working with a professional writer\, students will develop and write a poem. Students are invited to submit their completed poem to NOMA for publication in a soft-bound book that will be mailed to all participants. Experienced and novice poets are invited to apply by March 29. \n\n\n\n\nJack B. Bedell is the Louisiana Poet Laureate fro 2017–2019. He is Professor of English and Coordinator of Creative Writing at Southeastern Louisiana University where he also edits Louisiana Literature and directs the Louisiana Literature Press. SUMMARY:Looking Closely at Social Conditions in Nigeria Today
DESCRIPTION:Ndubuisi Ezeluomba\, the Francoise Billion Richardson Curator of African Art\, will lead a roundtable discussion about contemporary social conditions in Nigeria following a screening of the 2014 film Invasion 1897. Panelists from the Association of Nigerians in New Orleans will include Reuben Amienoho\, Alabor Derefaka\, and Olu Ariwajoye\, each representing a different regional group in Nigeria. \nABOUT INVASION 1897\nInvasion 1897 is a Nigerian movie that portrays the historical events that culminated in the invasion\, destruction\, and looting of the ancient West African kingdom of Benin by British troops in February 1897. The resulting battle led to the deposition and exile of Benin’s once powerful king\, Ovonramwen Nogbaisi. Many valuable artifacts from Benin were subsequently taken to museums in Europe. The movie\, produced and directed by Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen\, was released in 2014 and features several “Nollywood” actors\, including Segun Arinze\, Paul Obazele\, and Charles Inojie. The story revolves around a modern-day Nigerian student who is arrested and brought to trial for stealing historical African artifacts from a British museum and his imagined journey back in time to 1897 to defend himself and his homeland. \nThe film screening and discussion is organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art\, the Center for African and African American Studies at Southern University in New Orleans\, and the Association of Nigerians in New Orleans. \nWatch the trailer below for Invasion 1897 (2014 | Rated PG-13 | 1 hour\, 53 minutes)

Accompanying music will be performed by Mario Abney. \nAbout One Book One New Orleans\nA campaign for literacy and community\, One Book One New Orleans calls on New Orleans residents to share the experience of reading the same book at the same time\, works to provide literacy resources to adults\, and emphasizes the importance of dialogue between diverse groups of people. The organization’s selection for 2019 is Vengeance by Zachary Lazar. \nAbout Vengeance\nVengeance chronicles the journey of a narrator who meets an incarcerated man\, Kendrick\, at Louisiana’s state penitentiary\, Angola. As the narrator becomes increasingly determined to get to the bottom of Kendrick’s claim that he did not commit murder\, the lines between seemingly clear-cut concepts such as guilt and innocence begin to blur. The book\, a blend of fiction and nonfiction based on the murder of Zachary Lazar’s own father\, encourages readers to see the humanity of people in prisons—a group that is often marginalized. Vengeance sparks conversations about the relationships between those of us walking free and those of us behind bars\,suggesting that we are not as different as it would seem. \nREAD AN INTERVIEW with Zachary Lazar from NOMA Magazine.  \nThe novel begins with the narrator’s visit to a real-life passion play\, The Life of Jesus Christ\, staged at Angola prison by inmates. Award-winning Louisiana-based photographer Deborah Luster will share her portrait series of inmate actors who have performed in this drama. Bobby Wallace played the role of Jesus in the play while incarcerated at the state penitentiary.

For those who purchased admission for the April 18 concert\, tickets will remain valid for the new date\, or contact the NOMA Learning and Engagement Department for a refund at 504.658.4128 | education@noma.org. \nLouisiana-born saxophonist\, artist\, photographer\, and composer Dickie Landry will perform one of his legendary site-specific SOLO concerts in tribute to the work of Keith Sonnier and Tina Girouard. In his 60-minute performance in NOMA’s Great Hall\, Landry will play the tenor saxophone to explore the textures and abstract layers of sound within NOMA’s iconic architecture. There will be no seating\, and the audience is encouraged to move around freely throughout all levels of the museum during the performance. \n$15 nonmembers | $10 members\nPURCHASE ADVANCE TICKETS \nABOUT DICKIE LANDRY\nBorn in Cecilia\, Louisiana\, in 1938\, Richard “Dickie” Landry began his musical training at the age of six when he joined the St. Joseph Catholic Church Choir singing Gregorian Chant for six years seven days a week. Landry picked up the saxophone at age ten and continued the journey that would take him places far removed from the small town in St. Martin Parish where he was raised. After attending what is presently known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he majored in music education\, Landry taught for two years in the rural community of Chataignier in St. Landry parish. Restless and tired of playing in a blue-eyed soul band\, The Swing Kings\, in 1969 Landry moved to New York City to broaden his musical horizons. The avant-garde art scene in New York City was about to explode after a period of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Landry soon fell in with a crowd of artists\, musicians\, dancers\, and theater people that included Keith Sonnier\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Gordon Matta-Clark\, Robert Smithson\, Michael Heizer\, Walter de Maria\, Steve Reich\, Philip Glass\, Laurie Anderson\, Chuck Close\, Robert Wilson\, and others who are now considered visionaries in their respective fields. He became part of this circle and emerged as a renowned photographer\, noted for his documentation of the New York art scene in the 1970s. \nIn addition to Landry’s solo career\, he has collaborated with other composers\, artists and choreographers. In 1969 he was a founding member of the original group that formed the Philip Glass Ensemble and performed with the ensemble till 1981. He was on all concerts\, tours and recordings of that period including Einstein on the Beach\, an opera by Robert Wilson and Glass\, which is widely credited as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century. He has also worked with David Byrne of the Talking Heads on the Speaking in Tongues (Slippery People) album for which he received a Gold Record Award. In 1984 Landry began collaboration with Laurie Anderson at the Next Wave Festival in Set/Reset with choreographer Trisha Brown and artist Robert Rauschenberg. This collaboration continued with his inclusion in Anderson’s Mister Heartbreak tour of America and Japan. These efforts culminated in the feature film production of Home of the Brave and the CD of the same name. Landry has collaborated with artists Keith Sonnier\, Lawrence Weiner\, Chuck Close and Richard Serra and received commissioned works from choreographers Babs Case\, Trisha Brown\, Deborah Hay and Jane Comfort.

SUMMARY:Blue Muse Book Signing with Timothy Duffy
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Timothy Duffy\, whose tintype portraits of American roots musicians are on view in the exhibition Blue Muse\, will sign his companion book of the same title at the Museum Shop from 1 – 2 pm on Wednesday\, May 8. Russell Lord\, NOMA’s Freeman Family Curator of Photography\, wrote the foreword. Arrive early for a Gallery Talk at noon in the exhibition space with Duffy and Lord. New Orleans-based musicians Little Freddie King and Alabama Slim\, pictured in the book\, are also expected at the book signing. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nThe tintype is rooted in more than 150 years of photographic method. In this collection of extraordinary portraits\, Duffy brings new vitality to this old form\, capturing powerful images of musicians who represent the roots of American music. These American blues\, jazz\, and folk artists are living expressions of a cultural legacy\, made and remade by everyday people and passed down through generations. In the hands of the people in Duffy’s portraits\, centuries-old traditions find new expression in this digital millennium. Likewise\, Duffy’s photographic techniques fuse old forms and the original collodion wet plates with modern lighting. In this collaboration between photographer and artist\, music and image meet around a history of struggle\, adaptability\, and creativity. It is this ethos that Duffy captures in his tintypes. Blue Muse is jointly published by the New Orleans Museum of Art and the University of North Carolina Press.
