The diverse and bilingual ArteFuturo Ensemble perform a visually dynamic show with moving stories that offer a parallel between Latino immigrants dehumanized as “illegal aliens”\, and the historical struggle of African Americans with a national crisis of police shootings of unarmed black civilians.\n\nLed by award-winning performance artist José Torres-Tama\, the ensemble includes Monica “Spirit” McIntyre\, Cristina “Latina Siren” Maria Blanco\, Roberto “Mex-Andino” Carrillo\, and features Darius and Diego Torres-Copeland\, singers and performers. The panel will be moderated by Cassie Worley and Carrie Schwartz\, Senior Professor of Practice in the Media Arts & Digital Design Program at Tulane University. DESCRIPTION:Join Russell Lord\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings\, at the launch of his new book\, Looking Again: Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Museum admission will be waived for the program but the galleries will be closed to the public after 6 pm. \n6:30 pm: Discussion followed by a book signing. \nLooking Again is designed to provide the reader with a glimpse both into the collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art and into photography’s complexity. Through 131 objects and essays\, this new volume addresses long-held beliefs and offers new ways of thinking about\, and looking at\, photographs. Begun in the early 1970s\, the New Orleans Museum of Art’s photography collection is today one of the finest in the country\, numbering over twelve thousand works and spanning the history of photography from the early 1840s to the present. This book is published on the centennial of the first photography exhibition presented at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 1918. Copies may be purchased online at the NOMA Shop. \nLord will also lead a series of three Classes with Curators on March 6\, 13\, and 20\, about the history of photography from its origins to the present. \nLooking Again: Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art is copublished by the New Orleans Museum of Art and Aperture. Join NOMA curators as they explore a variety of topics and take you behind the scenes in our new Classes with Curators series. Designed for small groups of no more than twenty students\, classes are organized into three parts and are taught by one or more members of our professional staff. \nThis new program will launch on consecutive Tuesdays\, March 6\, 13\, and 20\, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. with “Looking Again: Histories of Photography\,” led by Russell Lord\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings. Each of the three class sessions will focus on a moment in the history of photography that is well represented in NOMA’s collections. \nCost for the series: \n$100 | Members\n$125 | Nonmembers \nRegistration is required. Additional Classes with Curators will be offered throughout 2018. \nMARCH 6 | ORIGINS AND EXPANSION\nThis session explores the origins of photography\, the various media invented in the nineteenth century\, and how photography quickly made its way around the world. \nMARCH 13 | THE CASE FOR ART PHOTOGRAPHY\nThis session looks at the various figures that argued for photography as an art form from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. \nMARCH 20 | MODERNISM AND PHOTOGRAPHY\nThe final session examines one of the richest areas of NOMA’s permanent collection: Modernist photographs made between the two world wars. \nABOUT RUSSELL LORD\nRussell Lord is the Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at the New Orleans Museum of Art. He previously held positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. His deepest area of expertise is the origins of photography\, but he has written and lectured widely on almost every moment in the history of photography. Lord’s recent publications include Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument (2013)\, and contributions to Photorealism: Beginnings to Today (2014) and East of the Mississippi: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography (2017). His recent exhibitions include Photography\, Sequence\, and Time (2012) and Something in the Way: A Brief History of Photography and Obstruction (2016–17).

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes\, Tracee Dundas\, Founder of New Orleans Fashion Week (NOFW)\, will join local designers Brik Allen and Tabitha Bethune for a discussion about their careers and the contemporary fashion scene in New Orleans. \nABOUT TRACEE DUNDAS\, BRIK ALLEN\, AND TABITHA BETHUNE\nTracee Dundas is Founder and Executive Producer of New Orleans Fashion Week (NOFW). She has been a fashion pioneer since receiving her degree in fashion and apparel design from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. In addition to overseeing the annual production of NOFW\, Dundas is a freelance fashion stylist\, contributing fashion editor to numerous publications\, and host of the regular “Fashion Friday” segment on WVUE/FOX 8. \nBrik Allen\, a Baton Rouge native\, attended Louisiana State University where he received a B.S. in Textiles\, Apparel\, and Merchandising in 2013. Allen began designing fulltime for his own line\, Haus of Brik\, in 2015. In 2016 he won the Top Design Competition and Yelp People’s Choice Award at New Orleans Fashion Week for his debut collection. Shortly after his success with New Orleans Fashion Week he landed a spot on the fifteenth season of Project Runway. Allen continues to design custom garments and show annual collections. \nLongtime actress and award-winning playwright Tabitha Bethune designed her La Playbill fashion line to pay homage to the arts and her undying love for the theater. Making use of rich\, smoldering fabrics\, Bethune constructed remarkable gowns each inspired by some of the world’s favorite plays\, artists\, and movies from both the present and past. In addition to the 10-karat gold stitching found in every hem of La Playbill gowns\, Bethune’s signature line contains dramatic cuts and tailoring. The daughter of a seamstress\, Tabitha Bethune was introduced to sewing at an early age. Beginning when she was five\, Bethune regularly assisted her mother by threading needles and cutting patterns for her as she sewed clothes for her seven children. Bethune soon recognized her passion for designing garments which flourished in her adult years.

SUMMARY:Classes with Curators | Looking Again: Histories of Photography
DESCRIPTION:Interested in taking a closer look at NOMA’s collections? Want to take a deep dive into our special exhibitions? Join NOMA curators as they explore a variety of topics and take you behind the scenes in our new Classes with Curators series. Designed for small groups of no more than twenty students\, classes are organized into three parts and are taught by one or more members of our professional staff. \nThis new program will launch on consecutive Tuesdays\, March 6\, 13\, and 20\, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. with “Looking Again: Histories of Photography\,” led by Russell Lord\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings. Each of the three class sessions will focus on a moment in the history of photography that is well represented in NOMA’s collections. \nCost for the series: \n$100 | Members\n$125 | Nonmembers \nRegistration is required. Additional Classes with Curators will be offered throughout 2018. \nMARCH 6 | ORIGINS AND EXPANSION\nThis session explores the origins of photography\, the various media invented in the nineteenth century\, and how photography quickly made its way around the world. \nMARCH 13 | THE CASE FOR ART PHOTOGRAPHY\nThis session looks at the various figures that argued for photography as an art form from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. \nMARCH 20 | MODERNISM AND PHOTOGRAPHY\nThe final session examines one of the richest areas of NOMA’s permanent collection: Modernist photographs made between the two world wars. \nABOUT RUSSELL LORD\nRussell Lord is the Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at the New Orleans Museum of Art. He previously held positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. His deepest area of expertise is the origins of photography\, but he has written and lectured widely on almost every moment in the history of photography. Lord’s recent publications include Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument (2013)\, and contributions to Photorealism: Beginnings to Today (2014) and East of the Mississippi: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography (2017). His recent exhibitions include Photography\, Sequence\, and Time (2012) and Something in the Way: A Brief History of Photography and Obstruction (2016–17).

DESCRIPTION:Drawings in Clay: Sgraffito Technique\nFriday\, March 9 |  7:00 – 8:30 p.m. \nNOMA Members | $50\nNonmembers | $60 \nSOLD OUT \nJoin artist Rachael DePauw in a hands-on workshop exploring the sgraffito technique. DePauw will walk participants through the history of sgraffito and discuss how she uses the technique in her own pottery practice. Under DePauw’s guidance\, participants will apply the technique in creating their own works on tablets that will be fired at an off-site studio. Finished tablets will be available for pickup at a later date. \nAbout the Artist\nRachael DePauw currently lives and works in New Orleans where she maintains an active studio career. Since graduating from Tulane University\, DePauw has become increasingly influenced by both the aesthetic and philosophic concepts associated with New Orleans’s Newcomb Pottery tradition. Through a process called sgrafitto\, DePauw creates bold relief patterns and uses design motifs referencing Louisiana’s indigenous flora. On the pre-fired vessel\, DePauw paints a thin layer of black\, liquid clay and then uses a small tool to carve through the slip revealing the white clay beneath. The linear and abstract patterns created reflect New Orleans’s unique landscape and reference the blue and greenish wares of Newcomb Pottery. \nThis program is presented in conjunction with Personalities in Clay: American Studio Ceramics from the E. John Bullard Collection.

Professor Matthew Restall of Pennsylvania State University will deliver the keynote address at NOMA\, titled “The Bold and the Bellicose: Maya Warfare in the Conquest Era.” Hosted by Tulane University’s Middle American Research Institute in association with NOMA and the Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies\, the lecture is open to all museum visitors. \nDr. Restall is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Colonial Latin American History at Pennsylvania State University. His areas of specialization include the histories of Mexico\, Guatemala. and Belize\, the Maya\, Spanish Conquest\, and Africans in Spanish America. As a recipient of NEH and Guggenheim fellowships\, he has investigated Mexico’s indigenous and African past. He is the author of numerous publications\, including The Maya World (1997)\, Maya Conquistador (1998)\, and Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest (2003). \nABOUT THE ARPA QUARTET\nThe Arpa Quartet is a Latin jazz group based in New Orleans. \n \nABOUT RACHEL DEPAUW AND THE SGRAFFITO TECHNIQUE\nJoin artist Rachael DePauw in a hands-on workshop exploring the sgraffito technique. Every Wednesday Louisiana residents with ID receive free admission to NOMA courtesy of the Helis Foundation. \nJoin Decorative Arts Curator Mel Buchanan as she leads visitors through A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes\, NOMA’s first-ever exhibition devoted to fashion. Experimental gowns\, headpieces\, and jewelry by avant-garde fashion designers Alexander McQueen\, Gucci\, Gypsy Sport\, and Iris van Herpen investigate symbols of womanhood and challenge conventional notions of beauty. More than 100 articles of daring fashion are presented in a dramatic gallery design that explores eight archetypal personality types.
