SUMMARY:Drawings in Clay: Sgraffito Technique with Rachael DePauw
DESCRIPTION:Drawings in Clay: Sgraffito Technique\nFriday\, March 9 |  7:00 – 8:30 p.m. \nNOMA Members | $50\nNonmembers | $60 \nSOLD OUT \nJoin artist Rachael DePauw in a hands-on workshop exploring the sgraffito technique. DePauw will walk participants through the history of sgraffito and discuss how she uses the technique in her own pottery practice. Under DePauw’s guidance\, participants will apply the technique in creating their own works on tablets that will be fired at an off-site studio. Finished tablets will be available for pickup at a later date. \nAbout the Artist\nRachael DePauw currently lives and works in New Orleans where she maintains an active studio career. Since graduating from Tulane University\, DePauw has become increasingly influenced by both the aesthetic and philosophic concepts associated with New Orleans’s Newcomb Pottery tradition. Through a process called sgrafitto\, DePauw creates bold relief patterns and uses design motifs referencing Louisiana’s indigenous flora. On the pre-fired vessel\, DePauw paints a thin layer of black\, liquid clay and then uses a small tool to carve through the slip revealing the white clay beneath. The linear and abstract patterns created reflect New Orleans’s unique landscape and reference the blue and greenish wares of Newcomb Pottery. \nThis program is presented in conjunction with Personalities in Clay: American Studio Ceramics from the E. John Bullard Collection.

SUMMARY:Fashion on Film Series: The Legacy of Alexander McQueen
DESCRIPTION:This five-part film series\, presented in conjunction with the exhibition A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes\, considers the role of fashion in modern society and takes an in-depth look at some of the industry’s most influential tastemakers. \n\nFriday\, March 2\, 6:30 pm: The Legacy of Alexander McQueen\nSaturday\, March 3\, 2 pm: Bangaologia: The Science of Style and Sapeurs: The Men Inside the Suits\nSaturday\, April 7\, 2 pm: Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards\nFriday\, April 20\, 7:30 pm: The First Monday in May\nFriday\, May 18\, 9:30 pm: The September Issue\n\nABOUT THE LEGACY OF ALEXANDER McQUEEN\nUsing never before seen interviews and archival fashion footage\, this documentary finished in 2015 by Loïc Prigent explores Alexander McQueen’s artistic inspirations through the lens of his last four collections. A year before he died\, the highly controversial Alexander McQueen presented a collection that revisited all the codes of an oeuvre that began in the 1990s. Morbid and excessive\, he ridiculed fashion and would crush and throw everything out\, only to start all over again\, better. Six months later\, he presented what critics hailed as a visionary masterpiece: Plato’s Atlantis. His previous collection had spoken of a planet invaded by waste; this new collection evoked an amphibian world\, in which faces and bodies had mutated. From the cut of the clothes to the wild shoes\, everything was new. Finally\, on January 18\, 2010\, three weeks before he committed suicide\, McQueen put on his last fashion show\, The Bone Collector. With a catacomb backdrop\, men were covered in shinbones\, skulls\, and ropes. It was a premonitory display. This enlightened and inspired documentary features remarkable images of McQueen’s many fashion shows—dances of death and political commentary shot through with multiple references—offering a fascinating insight into the designer’s career and personality. \nWatch the trailer:

SUMMARY:Friday Nights at NOMA: Opera Nouvelle presents Champion: An Opera in Jazz | Piano music by Nolan Tecklenburg | Fashion on Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Friday Nights at NOMA opens the museum’s doors for many interesting activities throughout the year: live music\, movies\, children’s activities\, and more. Regular admission prices apply—NOMA members are FREE—but there is no extra charge for programs or films. All galleries\, Café NOMA\, and the Museum Shop remain open till 9 pm. \n\n5 – 8 pm: Art on the Spot family activity table\n5:30 – 6:45 pm: Music by pianist Nolan Tecklenburg\n6:30 pm: Fashion on Film Series: The Legacy of Alexander McQueen\n7 pm: Opera Nouvelle presents selections from Champion: An Opera in Jazz\n\nABOUT OPERA NOUVELLE AND Champion: An Opera in Jazz by Terence Blanchard\nOpera Nouvelle will perform selections from Champion: An Opera in Jazz in advance of its New Orleans premiere. The opera\, with music by New Orleans’ jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard\, is based on the life of professional boxer Emile Griffith\, a three-time World Welterweight Champion and twice a World Middleweight Champion who fought from the late 1950s into the 1970s. One of Griffith’s greatest professional triumphs—winning back the Welterweight Championship from Benny “The Kid” Paret in 1962—was also one of his greatest personal tragedies. The seventeen punches he landed on Paret in seven seconds resulted in not only a knockout\, but also a coma from which Paret would never recover. Paret would die ten days later. \nBefore that life-changing televised fight\, in a room full of press and officials\, Paret mocked Griffith repeatedly with a derogatory term for homosexual. Years later\, Griffith’s sexuality as a gay man was revealed to the public after he was nearly killed by a gang outside a gay bar in New York. “I kill a man\,” Griffith was quoted to have said\, “and most people understand and forgive me. I love a man\, and to so many people this is an unforgivable sin.” In an inspiring\, moving\, and painful journey of self-discovery\, Champion presents audiences with a great contemporary tragic hero—a man of strength and courage consumed ultimately by rage\, regret\, and the terrible consequences of his actions. \nABOUT FASHION ON FILM: THE LEGACY OF ALEXANDER McQUEEN\nIn conjunction with A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes\, NOMA will screen five documentaries related to the fashion industry. Alexander McQueen (1969–2010) is among the designers represented in the exhibition. The Legacy of Alexander McQueen\, directed by Loïc Print\,  chronicles the last four collections before McQueen’s suicide in 2010. Through footage of his spectacular and provocative shows\, never-before-seen interviews of his mother and his relatives\, the documentary sheds light on the stunning world and the inspirations/obsessions of the world-renowned designer. (2015 | 53 minutes | Watch the trailer) \nFriday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. Worner Charitable Trust; New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation; and the Louisiana Division of the Arts\, Office of Cultural Development\, Department of Culture\, Recreation and Tourism\, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Arts Council of New Orleans.

SUMMARY:Special screening of The Square
DESCRIPTION:NOMA will screen Ruben Östlund’s  2017 Swedish satirical movie The Square\, starring Claes Bang\, Elisabeth Moss\, and Dominic West. The film centers around Christian\, the prestigious curator of a Stockholm museum who finds himself in times of both professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit\, “The Square.” The installation invites passersby to altruism\, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings\, but as the movie’s storyline makes clear\, it can be difficult to live up to your own ideals. Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile\, the museum’s public relations agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square.” The response is overblown and sends Christian\, as well as the museum\, into an existential crisis. Movie critic Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times wrote: “The Square may be many things — a high-wire ensemble comedy\, a vivid character study\, a tirelessly sustained volley of ideas — but it is no one’s idea of sanctuary.” (Rated R | 2 hours\, 31 minutes | Watch the trailer) \n

She takes sculpture into new realms with her incredibly complex hair designs\, which call upon influences as diverse as math\, nature\, engineering\, chemistry\, garment construction\, Old World architecture\, Africa\, and the Americas. In 2017\, her work was at the center of a media controversy after the architectural braided crown she created for singer Solange Knowles was airbrushed out of the Evening Standard magazine’s cover story. SUMMARY:Collect-O-Mania Film Fest: Iris
DESCRIPTION:What inspires a collector and when do personal collections become something more? Join us on select Fridays and Saturdays in January and February to explore the on-screen stories of passionate collectors who have helped shape the twenty-first-century art museum landscape. \n\nSaturday\, January 6\, 2 pm: Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict\nFriday\, January 12\, 7:30 pm: Adele’s Wish\nSaturday\, January 27\, 2 pm: Who The #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?\nFriday\, February 16\, 7 pm: Herb and Dorothy\nSaturday\, February 17\, 2 pm: Iris\n\nABOUT IRIS\nFrom legendary documentarian Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens\, Gimme Shelter)\, Iris pairs the late 88-year-old filmmaker with Iris Apfel\, the quick-witted\, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. Apfel’s signature style is accented by her coveted collection of couture costume jewelry. More than a fashion film\, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. (PG-13 | 2014 | 1 hour\, 19 minutes) \nWatch the trailer: \n
