Our full 2020 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nBenjamin Benus\, an associate professor of art and design history at Loyola University in New Orleans\, specializes in the history of twentieth-century art and design\, with a focus on Central Europe in the years between the world wars. His research examines connections between avant-garde art\, scientific illustration\, and data visualization during this period. This talk will be held in NOMA’s boardroom on the second floor. \nAs director of the Bauhaus printing and advertising workshop from 1925 to 1928\, the Austrian-born artist Herbert Bayer helped to shape the school’s distinctive approach to graphic design. This talk\, presented in conjunction with the exhibition An Ideal Unity: The Bauhaus and Beyond\, considers how Bayer\, following his immigration to the United States in 1938\, continued to explore and develop Bauhaus design principles within a variety of media\, including book illustration\, advertising\, and exhibition design. \n

With the admonition to “write this down\,” Williams began to describe how slaves made coded quilts and used them to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nYu Jiang\, Director of the Confucius Institute at Xavier University\, will discuss the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society. \nAs the inaugural director\, Dr. Jiang has led the Confucius Institute at Xavier University since May 2012. Under his leadership\, the Confucius Institute has become the leading Chinese-language instruction center in the state of Louisiana and the go-to platform on Chinese culture\, history\, and travel for local government agencies\, civic groups\, and non-profit organizations. Dr. Jiang received his B.A. in Archaeology from Beijing University in 1997\, and Ph.D. in Chinese Art History from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in 2004.  His research investigates bronze and jade art of early dynastic China\, particularly the Western Zhou from the eleventh to eighth centuries BCE\, with focus on material culture\, identity\, and socio-political discourse.  His publications cover much later periods as well\, including the casting technology of bronze drums from Southeast Asia.

Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nRaised in Cleveland\, MaPo Kinnord earned a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and a MFA from Ohio State University. From 1984 to 1992\, she taught ceramics and produced functional ceramics in Massachusetts and Berkeley\, California. She moved to Louisiana in 1995 and is currently an associate professor of art at Xavier University of Louisiana. She continues to create ceramic sculpture and develop art education projects at her studio in New Orleans.

Along it traveled precious cargoes of silk\, gold\, and ivory\, as well as revolutionary new ideas. Its oasis towns blossomed into thriving centers of Buddhist art and learning. In time it began to decline. Traffic slowed\, merchants left\, and towns vanished beneath the desert sands to be forgotten for a thousand years. Legends grew of lost cities filled with treasures and in the early years of the last century foreign explorers began to investigate these stories. Art and manuscripts were carried away and today are scattered through museums of a dozen countries. Join us for an all-hands-in guided workshop designed for young artists and their grown-ups to make together via Zoom. Meet other families\, look closely at a NOMA artwork\, and practice an art-making technique using materials you can find around the house. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and create together\, even while we are apart! \nFriday\, May 1\, 11 am to 12 pm\nTextured Tales\nTell the story of your space in this virtual family workshop inspired by the texturally-rich work of artist Jennifer Odem. \nFriday\, May 8\, 11 am to 12 pm\nIntertwined: Woven Wall Hangings\nRepurpose flexible fibers in your home to create a family wall hanging inspired by the work of artist Lynda Benglis. \nWorkshops are FREE with pre-registration. Families will create wax rubbings on paper inspired by Earth Mounds\, a sculptural work by New Orleans-based artist Jennifer Odem to tell the story of their home or space through texture. \nEarth Mounds is a part of the NOMA exhibition Ear to the Ground: Earth and Element in Contemporary Art. Explore the exhibition virtually through Google Arts & Culture! \nMaterials: \n\nThin paper (newsprint\, sketching paper\, or even printer paper)\nCrayons\, wrappers peeled off OR wax discs\nHousehold objects with interesting\, varied\, & defined textures: leaves\, coins\, paper clips\, flat lego pieces\, bottle caps\, TV remotes\, or other objects!\n*note: very smooth or soft textures may be difficult to create a rubbing/li>\n\nIntertwined: Woven Wall Hangings \nRepurpose soft\, flexible fibers in your home like clothing\, ribbon\, rubber bands\, or even plastic shopping bags to create a wall hanging in this youth and family workshop. Taking inspiration from artist Lynda Benglis’ work Brindaban Pink in NOMA’s collection\, participants will take a close look at the ways some artists twist\, tie\, weave\, and wrap materials in the creation of their sculptures. DESCRIPTION:Gallery talks are casual conversations between artists\, curators\, and other special guests with NOMA visitors frequently scheduled throughout the year. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nFan Zhang\, professor of practice at the Asian Art Institute at Tulane University\, will discuss the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society. \nFan Zhang specializes in the art and material culture of early medieval China (3rd–6th century CE) and the cultural interactions among East Asia\, Central Asia\, and Northeastern Asia through and beyond the Silk Road network. Adopting an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach\, her research probes into issues around identity\, migration\, and hybridity in the ancient world. Her current book project\, Cultural Encounters: Ethnic Complexity and Material Expressions in the Fifth-century Pingcheng\, draws attention to the funerary art of Pingcheng\, the capital city of the Northern Wei Dynasty\, and explores how artworks function as effective vehicles for individuals to articulate one’s identities in a multi-ethnic society. Fan Zhang has conducted archaeological fieldwork in both China and Central Asia. She also participated in research and curatorial programs in several museums\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the National Museum of Korea\, and the Sichuan Museum.
