SUMMARY:NOMA Book Club Discussion Program – CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art\, artists\, art museums\, NOMA’s collections and exhibitions. Our full 2020 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Most book club programs start promptly at noon\, but please arrive at 11:30 a.m. if you wish to bring a sack lunch or meet beforehand. NOMA will provide water and soft drinks. \nRSVP for the meetings you wish to attend so we can prepare the meeting space. \nPlease contact NOMA’s Education Department at 504.658.4128 or education@noma.org for information about joining the NOMA Book Club. \nApril 2020\nForeign Devils on the Silk Road: The Search for the Lost Treasures of Central Asia by Peter Hopkirk\nJohn Murray Publishers\, 2006\, ISBN: 0719564484 \nThe Silk Road\, which linked imperial Rome and distant China\, was once the greatest thoroughfare on earth. Along it traveled precious cargoes of silk\, gold\, and ivory\, as well as revolutionary new ideas. Its oasis towns blossomed into thriving centers of Buddhist art and learning. In time it began to decline. Traffic slowed\, merchants left\, and towns vanished beneath the desert sands to be forgotten for a thousand years. Legends grew of lost cities filled with treasures and in the early years of the last century foreign explorers began to investigate these stories. Art and manuscripts were carried away and today are scattered through museums of a dozen countries. Peter Hopkirk tells the story of the intrepid men who\, at great personal risk\, led these long-range archaeological raids. \nTUESDAY\, APRIL 14\, 12 – 1 pm | CURATORIAL PROGRAM \nTUESDAY\, APRIL 28\, 12 – 1 pm | BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

SUMMARY:Art in Bloom presented by IBERIABANK – Online auction
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO MAKE A DONATION TO ART IN BLOOM\n  \nDear Friends\, \nWe thank all of our sponsors and ticket holders for their support of Art in Bloom presented by IBERIABANK. Due to the current COVID 19 crisis\, NOMA and the Garden Study Club have made the difficult decision to cancel our annual fundraiser. Like every public institution\, the safety and well-being of our staff\, volunteers\, patrons\, guests\, donors and participants are our highest priorities during these complicated times. \nWe would especially like to thank our presenting sponsor\, IBERIABANK\, for their significant and on-going support of the arts and our New Orleans community. Funds raised at Art in Bloom provide critical resources for NOMA’s core educational initiatives and exhibitions as well as the important community projects sponsored by The Garden Study Club of New Orleans. These funds are even more crucial as both organizations strive to meet the growing needs of our community. \nWe hope that all sponsors and ticket holders will consider their sponsorships and ticket purchases as a 100% tax donation. The new CARES (Coronavirus Aid\, Relief\, and Economic Security) Act allows all taxpayers to take a charitable deduction of up to $300\, even if you do not itemize. Again\, we thank you all for your generous support and for your patience during this difficult time. \nAlthough guests will not be present at Art in Bloom this year\, everyone can participate virtually as we launch the silent auction on Friday\, May 1. The on-line auction will feature works of art from over 70 local and regional artists. We hope that you will bid high and bid often for Art in Bloom! It will make an enormous difference. Again\, thank you for your incredible support. We know we will see you in 2021! \nSincerely\, \n \n\n  \nSilent Auction Launch | Friday\, May 1 at 6 am through Monday\, May 11 at 9 am\nCLICK HERE TO MAKE A DONATION TO ART IN BLOOM\n \nThank you to our sponsors: \nPRESENTING SPONSOR\n \nBOUQUET\nEugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation\nNOSEGAY\nJ. Join us for an all-hands-in guided workshop designed for young artists and their grown-ups to make together via Zoom. Meet other families\, look closely at a NOMA artwork\, and practice an art-making technique using materials you can find around the house. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and create together\, even while we are apart! \nFriday\, May 1\, 11 am to 12 pm\nTextured Tales\nTell the story of your space in this virtual family workshop inspired by the texturally-rich work of artist Jennifer Odem. \nFriday\, May 8\, 11 am to 12 pm\nIntertwined: Woven Wall Hangings\nRepurpose flexible fibers in your home to create a family wall hanging inspired by the work of artist Lynda Benglis. \nWorkshops are FREE with pre-registration. Youth ages 5-10\, accompanied by an adult\, are encouraged to participate. Spots are limited to 8 families per workshop. \nSOLD OUT \nUpon registration\, you will receive a complete materials list\, pre-workshop to-do’s\, and an access link to join the workshop via Zoom. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\nTextured Tales \nPeople all around the world are spending lots of time in their homes. What everyday objects are a part of the spaces you spend time in? If you were to explore the objects in your space with just your hands\, what would they feel like? In this workshop\, see your surroundings in a new way by exploring the textures around you! Families will create wax rubbings on paper inspired by Earth Mounds\, a sculptural work by New Orleans-based artist Jennifer Odem to tell the story of their home or space through texture. \nEarth Mounds is a part of the NOMA exhibition Ear to the Ground: Earth and Element in Contemporary Art. Explore the exhibition virtually through Google Arts & Culture! \nMaterials: \n\nThin paper (newsprint\, sketching paper\, or even printer paper)\nCrayons\, wrappers peeled off OR wax discs\nHousehold objects with interesting\, varied\, & defined textures: leaves\, coins\, paper clips\, flat lego pieces\, bottle caps\, TV remotes\, or other objects!\n*note: very smooth or soft textures may be difficult to create a rubbing/li>\n\nIntertwined: Woven Wall Hangings \nRepurpose soft\, flexible fibers in your home like clothing\, ribbon\, rubber bands\, or even plastic shopping bags to create a wall hanging in this youth and family workshop. Taking inspiration from artist Lynda Benglis’ work Brindaban Pink in NOMA’s collection\, participants will take a close look at the ways some artists twist\, tie\, weave\, and wrap materials in the creation of their sculptures. Using an ordinary clothing hanger as a base\, participants will make colorful strands that can be twisted\, tied\, woven & wrapped into a new piece to liven up the walls! \nMaterials: \n\nClothing hanger\nOld clothes\, yarn\, ribbon\, plastic bags\, rubber bands\, or other soft/flexible materials\nScissors\nMasking or duct tape

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon with Fan Zhang\, Asian Art Institute at Tulane University – CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Gallery talks are casual conversations between artists\, curators\, and other special guests with NOMA visitors frequently scheduled throughout the year. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nFan Zhang\, professor of practice at the Asian Art Institute at Tulane University\, will discuss the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society. \nFan Zhang specializes in the art and material culture of early medieval China (3rd–6th century CE) and the cultural interactions among East Asia\, Central Asia\, and Northeastern Asia through and beyond the Silk Road network. Adopting an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach\, her research probes into issues around identity\, migration\, and hybridity in the ancient world. Her current book project\, Cultural Encounters: Ethnic Complexity and Material Expressions in the Fifth-century Pingcheng\, draws attention to the funerary art of Pingcheng\, the capital city of the Northern Wei Dynasty\, and explores how artworks function as effective vehicles for individuals to articulate one’s identities in a multi-ethnic society. Fan Zhang has conducted archaeological fieldwork in both China and Central Asia. She also participated in research and curatorial programs in several museums\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the National Museum of Korea\, and the Sichuan Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Throughout the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society\, artists influenced by Asian aesthetics will offer their perspective on the objects on view. \nRose Bratcher is an ensō painter and a monk at the New Orleans Zen Temple. In Zen\, ensō is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment\, strength\, elegance\, the universe\, and mu (the void). It is characterised by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics.

SUMMARY:Teen Summer Series workshop with Christian "Cubs the Poet" Davenport
DESCRIPTION:Although we can’t gather in person\, the Teen Summer Series aims to create a virtual space for us to learn about artists’ practices and to create together! Join us on Zoom on Fridays August 14\, 21\, and 28 at 3 pm for a series of workshops with local creatives working in a range of mediums. \nWorkshops are FREE and open to all teens\, however space is limited. Please check out the descriptions and materials needed for each workshop below\, and follow this link to sign up for one or all three! No art experience or prior knowledge is necessary to participate.  \nIdentity with Christian “Cubs the Poet” Davenport\nFriday\, August 21\, 3 pm on Zoom \nYour senses are being conditioned. Which one is your favorite of the five? Do you realize how you maneuver through the environment using your senses? If you could not see\, how would you describe beauty? If you could not hear\, how would you know the truth? This workshop allows you space to ponder over the privilege you have in creating your own identity. \nWhat you’ll need: Paper and things to write or draw with (pen or pencil or other artistic tools). \n  \n \nAbout the Teaching Artist \nChristian “Cubs the Poet” Davenport was born in Baton Rouge\, LA and raised in the DMV (District of Columbia\, Maryland\, Virginia). Growing up\, he attended Catholic schools\, yet each school was predominantly of one race. He believes he witnessed the effects of institutional education on all identifying races and classes in America. Wanting to develop and understand his own way of thinking\, Cubs left college to start typing custom poems in the French Quarter\, where he honed his poetic skills and expanded his vocabulary with regards to communicating with tourists and natives. He believes freedom is not the experience\, but the expression of the experience. The inaugural Poet Laureate of Baton Rouge\, Cubs is currently working on self publishing his first book of poems and art\, What I Did with my Free Time. Cubs the Poet is also a visual artist\, whose latest exhibition\, “Say It: I Love Black People\,” delved into the lack of intimacy and vulnerability between races\, in addition to the lack of development of self love. \nThe workshop is projected to run 90 minutes on Zoom. Open to all teens! Spots are limited.\nClick here to register. Confirmation and the Zoom link will be provided by email.

SUMMARY:Teen Summer Series workshop with Dorothy Ray
DESCRIPTION:Although we can’t gather in person\, the Teen Summer Series aims to create a virtual space for us to learn about artists’ practices and to create together! Join us on Zoom on Fridays August 14\, 21\, and 28 at 3 pm for a series of workshops with local creatives working in a range of mediums. \nWorkshops are FREE and open to all teens\, however space is limited. Please check out the descriptions and materials needed for each workshop below\, and follow this link to sign up for one or all three! No art experience or prior knowledge is necessary to participate. \nMental Building Blocks with Dorthy Ray \nAugust 28th\, 3 pm on Zoom \nCatch a look inside photographer\, organizer\, and mixed media artist Dorthy Ray’s mind in this workshop on the creative process. Often starting with a meditative “brain dumping” exercise\, Ray systematically sorts through collected ideas and experiences and conducts research to produce an artwork\, “starting with a mop and ending with a needle.” Bring your own collected visuals\, ideas\, intentions and sketches and learn to harness\, hone and fine-tune within your own creative process. \nWhat you’ll need: Paper\, things to write or draw with\, and your cell phone or social media saved images / camera roll \n  \n \nAbout the Teaching Artist \nDorthy Ray is a Louisiana native photographer\, organizer\, mixed media artist and educator working with The Future Fund and Broadmoor Senior High to provide training to middle and high school students to prepare them for jobs in the creative workforce. Dorthy Ray’s work will be on view at Under Nine Studios in Chalmette on Saturday\, August 28th. \nThe workshop is projected to run 90 minutes on Zoom. Open to all teens! Spots are limited.\nClick here to register. Confirmation and the Zoom link will be provided by email.

SUMMARY:LOVE in the Garden 2020 presented by Hancock Whitney - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans Museum of Art has made the difficult decision to cancel our annual fundraiser\, LOVE in the Garden presented by Hancock Whitney scheduled for Friday\, September 25\, 2020. Given the number of attendees and the social distancing guidelines issued by the City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana due to the COVID- 19 pandemic\, the New Orleans Museum of Art’s leadership along with presenting sponsor\, Hancock Whitney\, agreed that canceling the event would be in the best interest of public health safety. \nThe well-being and safety of staff\, volunteers\, sponsors\, guests\, and donors are NOMA’s and Hancock Whitney’s highest priorities. \nFor fifteen years\, LOVE in the Garden\, which takes place in the iconic Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, celebrates the visual and culinary artists of New Orleans with a festive evening offering the best of New Orleans cuisine\, spirits\, and entertainment. Over 1\,500 guests enjoy featured menu items from over 60 of New Orleans’ finest restaurants\, caterers and food trucks\, as well as craft cocktails from New Orleans’ top bartenders. The funds raised at LOVE provide crucial general operating support to NOMA\, allowing us to keep staff on payroll\, create innovative virtual content and serve our community with educational initiatives. \nWe thank our presenting sponsor\, Hancock Whitney as well as all of our loyal sponsors\, patrons\, donors and volunteers who have made LOVE the success that it is. We look forward to celebrating with all of you in 2021 for a spectacular LOVE in the Garden presented by Hancock Whitney.
