After service in the Mexican Revolution as a youth\, he emigrated to Texas; studied in Chicago; and\, in 1929\, first made his way to Louisiana. For almost 70 years\, he worked in New Orleans. They fell in love with a style of music created over 50 years ago by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen\, and now they are bringing it to the people of New Orleans. You can expect lots of Fela tunes and some Afrofunk from ’70s Ghana and Benin\, but the majority of Kumasi’s live show features original music stemming from West African concepts\, composed to make any crowd move and groove. \n  \n \nPerformance by Susanne Ortner Trio\n7–8 pm in the Amphitheater\nDriven by an “addictive yearning” for deep connection\, this stellar trio led by German-born reed player Susanne Ortner explores often overlooked 20th-century repertoire tunes from disparate traditions—with great sensitivity\, communication\, and fire. SUMMARY:Pass It On Open Mic & Showcase: Queens Carved in Time
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Queen Nefertari’s Egypt\, Pass It On hosts its monthly open mic and showcase at NOMA in the courtyard featuring artist John T. Scott’s Spirit Gates. \nIn collaboration with the All About Love Education Studio and the Queens of the Washitaw Nation\, this program is the culmination of a Creative Assembly Connector Residency led by Brit Lindsey and Pass It On that featured weekly workshops for youth led by a range of New Orleans artists including poets\, fashion designers\, visual artists\, and Black Masking Indian Queens. These workshops included artist-led design prompts which utilized the medium of sewing as a community responsibility and cathartic artistic ritual. \nJoin us in shining light on and basking in the light of these young artists\, alongside live performances from other artists. We celebrate the connection between sewing and connection to culture with Big Queen Ausettua along with the visual design brilliance of Lana Meyon and students from Lawerence D. Crocker. We also have a very special lineup featuring Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley\, Chasity Hunter\, Naomi Daugherty\, Akilah Toney\, and Preach; and music from Charm Taylor\, Bobbi Rae\, and The Vibe. The program will also feature a special activation of Spirit Gates by percussionist Nita Bailey. \nFree and open to the public. When you arrive\, please check in at the event entrance located in the outdoor courtyard on the left hand side of the building. \nRegister Now \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Brit Lindsey\nBrit Lindsey is an educator\, equitable education advocate\, social worker\, creative entrepreneur\, and art director. Hurricane Katrina and a full scholarship to play basketball at Tulane University drew her to New Orleans from Atlanta\, Georgia in 2006\, and she’s held permanent residence ever since. \nShe is the owner of Master Minds Private Tutoring\, a New Orleans-based tutoring service that caters to Children of HUE and members of the LGBTQIA+ Community. She recently founded the HUEMan Development Project. This work and the inspiration for the creation of this nonprofit is rooted in community responsibility\, self-actualization\, and entrepreneurial equity in New Orleans. Brit is particularly interested in assisting children of HUE along their journey of identity exploration\, through intergenerational mentorship and community service.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pass It On\nPass It On is an art and performance series dedicated to the advancement and preservation of New Orleans’s multicultural artisan community\, through the integration of visual art\, music\, and spoken word. \nCreated in 2008\, the series sought to reestablish New Orleans’s cultural footprint post-Katrina. Pass It On\, a name derived from John T. Scott’s philosophy\, that if ever he was to do a good deed or kindness for someone\, that instead of being thanked\, he would ask that person to “pass it on.” Here\, “it” represents the idea of caring for each other\, the energy of service to one another\, and the responsibility of love when paying kindness forward. \nPass It On now enjoys an expansive network of celebrated poets\, visual artists\, musicians\, educators\, activists\, youth\, and cultural institutions—all who pass on the tradition of community narration through spoken word\, indigenous jazz and progressive music culture and visual arts.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Creative Assembly\nCreative Assembly is a community engagement initiative by the New Orleans Museum of Art that uses neighborhood-based participatory art experiences as a vehicle for personal exploration\, community collaboration\, and social change. \nLearn more \nNOMA’s Creative Assembly community engagement initiative is supported by the Wagner Foundation.

SUMMARY:Food as Medicine: New Orleans Cuisine with Healthy Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:As one of the culinary capitals of the world\, New Orleans’s cuisine is one of the city’s most notable attributes. While many of these dishes are world renowned\, their nutrition and healthiness is sometimes compromised during their creation. Lower 9th Ward native Courtney Clark has dedicated much of her multidisciplinary creative practice to community food justice organizing in an attempt to combat many of the diet-related diseases that exist within many of New Orleans’s communities. \nClark is a member of NOMA’s Creative Assembly Cohort and will lead a food demonstration in the amphitheater of NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden on June 8 from 5 to 7 pm. During this workshop\, attendees will learn how to make healthy alternatives to well-known New Orleans dishes and also experience a performance from Big Chief Romeo Bougere of the 9th Ward Hunters. \nThis event is free and open to the public. The first 50 registrants will be guaranteed a tasting of the food made by Clark during the demonstration. \nRegister Now \nPlease note that this is an outdoor event with seating on the grass in the amphitheater. We welcome bringing your own folding chair or blanket to sit on. \nAbout Courtney Clark\nCourtney Clark is a native of the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans and has worked as an artist\, school teacher\, community food justice organizer\, and mental health advocate\, throughout her eclectic career. Between 2015 and 2020\, Clark served as Programming Coordinator for Backyard Gardeners Network (BGN)\, spearheading its Food As Medicine program—a 10-week health and nutrition workshop series for adults which focused on food as a primary source of healing. In 2016\, Clark was selected to serve as a U.S. delegate by Slow Food USA for the Terra Madre del Gusto Food conference in Turin\, Italy. NOLA.com recognized her as an Everyday Hero in 2017 and JJill and Food Network as an Inspired Woman for her work in 2020. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! In addition to monthly virtual book discussions\, the Book Club meets periodically in person for curatorial programs related to the book selections. \nBooks are selected in advance and planned for the entire year according to the exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the selected titles. In 2005\, she was co-curator of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Cooney produced a comparative archaeology television series\, titled Out of Egypt\, which aired in 2009 on the Discovery Channel and is available online. Her popular books include The Women Who Would Be King: Hatshepsut’s Rise to Power in Ancient Egypt\, When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt\, and The Good Kings: Absolute Power in Ancient Egypt and the Modern World. She likes to call her music “New Orleans Swag” because it is influenced by and mixes in the traditional rhythms of the Second Line\, R&B\, hip-hop\, and folk. Jones’s music also celebrates legendary artists and their traditions\, like Deacon John and Allen Toussaint\, who through their musicality and songwriting made available New Orleans’ soulful and spirit-filled culture\, the bayou landscape\, and its colorful heritage to people around the world. Jones’s music is a good bowl of gumbo\, mixing in all these traditions to produce songs that honor love\, well-being\, ancestry\, family\, tradition\, and good times. \n  \n \nSets from DJ Chinua\n6:00–7:15 and 8:30–10:00 pm in the Coleman Courtyard\nDJ Chinua is a New Orleans–based DJ and event curator interested in facilitating community and connection through live events and global sounds. His projects include a two-year collaboration with Solange Knowles as resident DJ for Saint Heron’s Proclamation dance party series as well as ongoing collaborations with Arcade Fire for their Krewe du Kanaval celebrations and DOPEciety for Couches. He is also the founder and co-sound selector for Ascendance\, a monthly zodiac-themed dance party. \n  \n \nStill Life with Alan Grimes\n6:15–7:15 pm in the Coleman Courtyard\nAlan Grimes’s still life sessions started five years ago at Gallery 992 in Atlanta for the vanguard of artists and photographers. Combining academic figure drawing and set design with a community collection of work\, the program has evolved into a diverse artistic/photographic think tank that flushes out amazing conceptual pieces in a live setting with 15- to 20-minute poses by models. \nFor this event\, materials will be provided to produce your own drawings. \n  \n \nPerformance by Jesse Armerding\n7:15 pm in the Coleman Courtyard\nJesse Armerding is a drummer originally from New England. He enjoys mixing drumming with other mediums\, such as playing for dancers\, creating characters\, and foraging found-object percussion. For Iyahdae\, every picture is as unique as the individual behind the camera\, and their work understands the power of perspective and how art can be used to inspire and invoke feelings of healing\, peace\, awareness\, and truth. Iyahdae uses photography intentionally to help others see the value in themselves. \n  \n \nAbout Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley\nBorn by the Red River waters of Central Louisiana and the only child of her parents to survive outside the womb\, Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley is an intentional\, evolving\, faith-spirited\, multi-inspired artist based in New Orleans. Working in many mediums\, her work spans across page\, stage\, canvas\, theater\, music\, talk radio\, and short film. Sha’Condria earned her Bachelor of Science in biology from Xavier University of Louisiana and further studied community health sciences with a focus in maternal and child health at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She is a multiple-time national poetry slam champion and viral spoken word artist who shares her work nationally and internationally\, appearing in the third season of TV One’s Verses and Flow\, as well as on British television and BBC World Radio. Beyond the New Orleans Saints and even the French monarchy\, the fleur-de-lis has even deeper roots that stretch to the continent of Africa. In his book Fleur Of The Nile: Remaking The Fleur-De-Lis\, Casey Delmont traces the origins of the fleur-de-lis and illuminates its relationship to the ancient Egyptian lotus. During this special Wednesday gallery talk in the museum’s Lapis Center for the Arts\, Delmont will be in conversation with NOMA’s Community Engagement Curator Nic Brierre Aziz regarding the book\, the history of this popular symbol\, and the layers of complexity that the fleur-de-lis still holds. \nFree with museum admission. His early creative involvement with the fleur-de-lis and his interest in symmetry analysis of the symbol led him to pen an engaging story based on substantiative evidence presupposing the Egyptian origins of the fleur-de-lis. His book Fleur of the Nile claims that the fleur-de-lis is an ancient iteration of an archetypical double-flower motif which emanated from prehistoric human ornamentation that began in Africa as far back in time as 35\,000 BCE. Casey has produced over 8 books through Roux Publishing and has written or contributed to two other books including La Fleur De Lis: Histories\, Mysteries\, Recipes and Mixologies of the World’s Oldest Symbol. He is a native and resident of Louisiana and has been recognized as a creative force in the Capital City helping to bring new life to the rich cultural heritage of Louisiana and the Greater South. Her works comprise an array of media from performance and installation to the glittering table laid for thirty-nine iconic women in The Dinner Party (now permanently housed at the Brooklyn Museum)\, the groundbreaking Birth Project\, and the meticulously researched Holocaust Project. She designed the monumental installation for Dior’s 2020 Paris couture show and\, in 2019\, established the Judy Chicago Portal\, which will help to accomplish her lifelong goal of overcoming the erasure that has eclipsed the achievements of so many women. \nThe Flowering is her vivid and revealing autobiography\, fully illustrated with photographs of her work\, as well as personal images and a foreword by Gloria Steinem. SUMMARY:Funerary Traditions in Ancient Egypt and New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:One of the most notable characteristics of Ancient Egyptian culture is preparation for the afterlife. Rituals around funerals and burials have long been of popular interest\, and many of these traditions can be seen in contemporary African-American culture. Rhodes Funeral Home currently operates as the oldest African-American-owned business in New Orleans and the genesis of its creation is rooted in many of the same intentions that those within Ancient Egypt had within their burial traditions. \nFor this conversation\, Community Engagement Curator Nic Brierre Aziz is in dialogue with Stephanie Rhodes Navarre and Joan Rhodes\, two of the four managers of the Rhodes Funeral Home\, to explore the history of their family’s business\, the traditions that go into their burials and the ways in which their work relates to the African-based funerary practices of Ancient Egypt. \nRegister Now \nThis program is free to the public.
