They are available for purchase directly from our partner vendors. \n\nNOMA at Night Line-Up\nCelebrate the opening of Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club during an evening filled with music and art. \n \nLive Music from Bamboula 2000\nLapis Center for the Arts\nBamboula 2000 is deeply rooted in the soul of Congo Square in New Orleans. This exciting music and dance experience formed in 1994 has become beloved in New Orleans and beyond. Bamboula 2000’s music is influenced by New Orleans\, the Caribbean\, and Africa. Members of Bamboula have appeared in HBO’s Tremé\, TNT’s Memphis Beat\, American Horror Story\, and Roots. World music percussionist Luther Gray leads the group. Gray has performed all over the world with Bamboula 2000 and the Guardians of the Flame Mardi Gras Indians. \n  \n\n\nDJ Sets from GAC and lo tide\nGreat Hall\nFrench-Algerian photographer and DJ\, GAC is based in New Orleans where she spins her large collection of vinyls around town. Taking inspiration from her own heritage\, her musical sets travel from France to North Africa to create eclectic dance floors from Sheila to Fadoul and Les Rita Mistouko. \nCurator\, producer\, and record slinger based in New Orleans\, lo tide’s all-vinyl sets meet the moment\, threading global rhythms from the International underground. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copies\, and selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor more information on the NOMA Book Club\, please contact NOMA’s Curator of Education\, Tracy Kennan\, at tkennan@noma.org or 504.658.4113. \nRegister Now \n\nFebruary 2023\nBook Club Discussion | Friday\, February 24\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Real Ambassadors: Dave and Iola Brubeck and Louis Armstrong Challenge Segregation by Keith Hatschek\nUniversity Press of Mississippi\, 2022\, ISBN-13: 978-1496837844 \nDuring the Cold War\, the US State Department enlisted some of America’s greatest musicians to serve as jazz ambassadors\, touring the world to trumpet a so-called “free society.” Honored as celebrities abroad\, the jazz ambassadors\, who were overwhelmingly African Americans\, returned home to racial discrimination and deferred dreams. Three determined artists–Louis Armstrong\, Dave Brubeck\, and Iola Brubeck used this double standard as the central message and take a stand against segregation by writing and performing a jazz musical titled The Real Ambassadors. First conceived by the Brubecks in 1956\, the musical’s journey to the stage for its 1962 premiere tracks extraordinary twists and turns across the backdrop of the civil rights movement. SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Printmaking (Ages 55 and Up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun in the process. In conjunction with Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club\, on view through May 7\, we invite you to join us for an eight-session printmaking course. \nOver eight weeks\, participants will work with teaching artist\, Belinda Tanno\, and museum staff\, to learn the tools\, processes\, media\, and techniques of printmaking\, while examining prints in the museum’s extensive collection. Activities will include block printing using linocut tools\, mono-printing on gelee plates\, and mini journal making. \nNo printmaking experience or prior knowledge is necessary to participate. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the keynote event of the 18th annual Tulane Maya Symposium\, Mapping Inequality: Lessons from Central Mexico with Barbara E. Mundy\, Robertson Chair in Latin American Art\, Tulane University. A reception for all attendees will follow the lecture. \nThis program is free and open to the public. For more information about the 18th Annual Tulane Maya Symposium: Inequality Among the Maya and to access the full symposium registration\, please visit their website. \n\nKeynote Abstract\nPainted manuscripts of Central Mexico often present images of historic migrations\, led by elites\, and genealogies of ruling families\, set against a backdrop of territory. Cartography\, then\, offers a visual record of the inequality implicit in social hierarchies. At the same time\, as physical objects that had to be created and cared for\, maps depended upon the involvement of a range of social actors and were shaped over time by evolving practices. In this talk\, I turn to a selection of maps from Central Mexico to show levels of social complexity implicated in objects that seem\, on their surfaces\, to offer direct records of inequality. \n \nAbout Barbara E. Mundy\nBarbara E. Mundy’s scholarship dwells in zones of contact between Native peoples and settler colonists as they forged new visual cultures in the Americas. She is particularly interested in the social construction of space and its imaginary\, which was the subject of her first book\, The Mapping of New Spain. Her most recent book\, The Death of Aztec Tenochtitlan\, the Life of Mexico City\, draws on Indigenous texts and representations to counter a colonialist historiography\, and to argue for the city’s nature as an Indigenous city through the sixteenth century. With Dana Leibsohn\, Mundy is the co-creator of Vistas: Visual Culture in Spanish America\, 1520-1820\, an NEH funded project. \nShe serves the editorial board of Estudios de Cultura Náhuatl\, and The Americas\, as well as on the advisory board of the Society of Fellows in Critical Bibliography. Mundy is the past president of the American Society for Ethnohistory (2021-22) and was the 2021-22 Kislak Chair at the Library of Congress. She has received fellowships from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Art (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art\, and the John Carter Brown Library in support of her work.

Norton & Company\, 2022\, ISBN-13: 978-1324006015 \nIn freewheeling 1920s Paris\, Kiki de Montparnasse captivated as a nightclub performer\, sold out gallery showings of her paintings\, starred in Surrealist films\, and shared drinks and ideas with the likes of Jean Cocteau and Marcel Duchamp. Her best-selling memoir―featuring an introduction by Ernest Hemingway―made front-page news in France and was immediately banned in America. All before she turned thirty. Kiki and Man Ray met in 1921 during a chance encounter at a café. What followed was an explosive decade-long connection\, both professional and romantic\, during which the couple grew and experimented as artists\, competed for fame\, and created many of the shocking images that cemented Man Ray’s reputation as one of the great artists of the modern era. The works they made together\, including the Surrealist icons Le Violon d’Ingres and Noire et blanche\, now set records at auction. Dr. Menka shares the grisly news with his oldest college friend\, bon viveur\, star engineer\, and Yoruba royal\, Duyole Pitan-Payne. The life of every party\, Duyole is about to assume a prestigious post at the United Nations in New York\, but it now seems that someone is determined that he not make it there.
