DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans Museum of Art has made the difficult decision to cancel our annual fundraiser\, LOVE in the Garden presented by Hancock Whitney scheduled for Friday\, September 25\, 2020. Given the number of attendees and the social distancing guidelines issued by the City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana due to the COVID- 19 pandemic\, the New Orleans Museum of Art’s leadership along with presenting sponsor\, Hancock Whitney\, agreed that canceling the event would be in the best interest of public health safety. \nThe well-being and safety of staff\, volunteers\, sponsors\, guests\, and donors are NOMA’s and Hancock Whitney’s highest priorities. \nFor fifteen years\, LOVE in the Garden\, which takes place in the iconic Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, celebrates the visual and culinary artists of New Orleans with a festive evening offering the best of New Orleans cuisine\, spirits\, and entertainment. Over 1\,500 guests enjoy featured menu items from over 60 of New Orleans’ finest restaurants\, caterers and food trucks\, as well as craft cocktails from New Orleans’ top bartenders. A cash-only bar will sell beverages on-site. \nVIEW THE MENU AND MAKE AN ORDER \nAbout Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes\nBruce Sunpie Barnes is a veteran New Orleans musician\, former National Park Service ranger for 30 years\, actor\, photographer\, book author\, former high school biology teacher\, former college football All-American\, and former NFL player (Kansas City Chiefs). Sunpie Barnes’s many careers have taken him far and wide. He has traveled to over 50 countries playing his own style of what he calls Afro-Louisiana music incorporating Blues\, Zydeco\, Gospel\, Caribbean and African influenced rhythms and melodies. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, master accordion and harmonica player\, also piano\, rubboard\, talking drum\, and dejembe. He learned accordion from some of the best Zydeco pioneers in Louisiana including Fernest Arceneaux\, John Delafose\, and Clayton Sampy. Along with his musical group Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots\, he has performed at festivals and concerts across the US and around the globe. Sunpie has recorded 6 critically acclaimed CDs with his compositions currently featured in 16 Hollywood film productions. \nIn addition to this musical work Sunpie is also a member of the Paul Simon band and finished a 58 city arena tour “Paul Simon and Sting Together” which spanned 34 countries (2014-2015). He is deeply involved in New Orleans parade culture and co-authored the 2015 critically acclaimed book Talk That Music Talk passing on brass band music in New Orleans the traditional way. More than 300 of Sunpie’s photographs are featured in this book. \nSunpie is the Big Chief of the North Side Skull and Bone Gang\, one of the oldest existing Black Carnival groups in New Orleans. Sunpie is also an active member of the second line parading organization Black Men of Labor Social Aid and Pleasure Club. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. We require that all registrants to this event wear face masks as per CDC\, state\, and city guidelines. All staff and participants will be wearing face masks\, with the exception of the on-stage musicians. There will be a minimum of 10 ft from the edge of the stage to the beginning of seating. \nPer city guidelines\, capacity will be limited to 50 people. \nNo social gathering will be permitted. Please maintain a safe distance of at least 6ft from those not in your party. \nNOMA staff will be on site to monitor social distancing and assist with seating spacing. SUMMARY:Helen Gillet in Virtual Concert for Mending the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archaeologist who explores synthesized sounds\, textures\, and rhythms using an acoustic cello. For Mending the Sky\, Gillet will weave together a soundscape using cello\, drum machine\, sounds in nature\, loop pedal\, poetry and storytelling. Across a series of three solo performances\, Gillet will explore the vibrations of sonic disturbance: the tipping points where swollen rivers of human tension and natural imbalances flood the banks of an unsustainable society. He has played with various ensembles at jazz festivals and clubs in Australia\, Barbados\, Bermuda\, Brazil\, Canada\, England\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Hungary\, India\, Italy\, New Zealand\, the Netherlands\, Norway\, Russia\, South Africa\, Spain\, Switzerland\, and Wales. Ashlin leads the Trumpet Mafia and plays regularly with ensembles in New Orleans\, such as the Ellis Marsalis Quintet\, The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, and Bill Summers and Jazalsa. He has played with musicians such as Ellis Marsalis\, Jason Marsalis\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Herlin Riley\, Roland Guerin\, Leroy Jones\, Derek Douget\, Adonis Rose\, Dr. John\, Karl Denson\, Igor Butman\, and Nicholas Payton\, as well as vocalists Rafael Saadiq\, the O’Jays\, Anthony Hamilton\, PJ Morton\, Aretha Franklin\, Quiana Lynell\, Tiffany Austin\, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Ashlin has played on more than 30 albums with other musicians and has featured solos on albums such as the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint (2019) and Live at Newport (2017)\, Tiffany Austin’s Unbroken (2018)\, Ellis Marsalis’s Ellis Marsalis Quintet plays Ellis Marsalis (2017)\, and Jason Marsalis’s Heirs of the Crescent City (2016). \nIn addition to teaching private lessons and leading master classes at many high schools\, colleges\, and universities throughout the U.S.\, Ashlin teaches children and teenagers at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music (2015-present)\, teaches applied jazz trumpet lessons at the University of New Orleans (2011-present)\, and serves as a visiting assistant professor of jazz studies at Tulane University (2018-2020). \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. Ticket buyers will be notified by email. \nAbout Mahmoud Chouki and Noah Young\nMahmoud Chouki is a master guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer living and working in New Orleans. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. As artistic director of Rencontre Orient-Occident at Chateau Mercier in Sierre\, Switzerland\, Chouki has brought together a wide range of international musicians to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West\, with music often the only common language between performers. \nBest known as a founding member of jazz/funk band Naughty Professor\, Noah Young is one of the most sought-after bassists in New Orleans. Having moved to the city to study jazz with a who’s who of local legends\, Young has stayed busy in his 8+ years of activity in the music scene composing\, recording\, and performing with numerous artists\, including: David Shaw\, George Porter Jr.\, Chali 2na\, Big Freedia\, Ivan Neville\, Eric Bloom\, Mike Dillon\, Sasha Masakowski\, Nigel Hall\, Russell Batiste\, Dee-1\, The Stooges Brass Band\, Leroy Jones\, and many more. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, November 24\, Governor John Bel Edwards announced that Louisiana would move to modified Phase Two restrictions on Wednesday\, November 25. Those modified restrictions include a revised limit on indoor gatherings. The New Orleans Museum of Art is committed to the safety of our guests and staff\, and to complying with state and city safety regulations. \nAs such\, we are postponing the December 3 and 4 Odyssey events. SUMMARY:Helen Gillet in Virtual Concert for  Mending the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archaeologist who explores synthesized sounds\, textures\, and rhythms using an acoustic cello. For Mending the Sky\, Gillet will weave together a soundscape using cello\, drum machine\, sounds in nature\, loop pedal\, poetry and storytelling. Across a series of three solo performances\, Gillet will explore the vibrations of sonic disturbance: the tipping points where swollen rivers of human tension and natural imbalances flood the banks of an unsustainable society. Responding to quarantine\, friction and trauma\, Gillet’s performances will search for homeostasis and seek to create spaces for empowerment as she responds musically to the artists and ideas explored in the show. \nEach of three solo performances will take place within the exhibition galleries for Mending the Sky and stream for free across NOMA’s social media channels to offer a wide audience an intimate musical experience at a time when few opportunities for live music exist. \nJoin us on NOMA’s YouTube channel or the home page of this website. \nA final live-streaming concert will be held on Sunday\, January 31\, 2021. \nVirtual programs at NOMA are made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

DESCRIPTION:Bring the New Orleans Museum of Art into your home and get creative together through Virtual Studio KIDS! family art-making workshops. Join us for an all-hands-in live Zoom experience designed for young artists and their grown-ups to make together\, guided by a teaching artist. Meet other families\, practice close-looking with a NOMA artwork\, and try out an art-making technique using materials you can find around the house. \nThis season’s series draws inspiration from NOMA’s special exhibition Mending the Sky\, a body of contemporary work by both locally and internationally based artists exploring processes of mending\, repairing\, and healing a world turned upside down. Mending the Sky will be on view October 9\, 2020 through January 31\, 2020. \nWorkshops are FREE with pre-registration (fill out the form below). DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book! In addition to monthly book discussions\, the Book Club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. Books are selected in advance and planned for the entire year according to the exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the selected titles.
