DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art\, artists\, art museums\, NOMA’s collections and exhibitions. Our full 2019 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Most book club programs start promptly at noon\, but please arrive at 11:30 a.m. if you wish to bring a sack lunch or meet beforehand. SUMMARY:Gallery activation of Wafaa Bilal's 168:01
DESCRIPTION:NOMA curators will be present to discuss artist Wafaa Bilal’s interactive installation 168:01 in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge. The work is comprised of a large bookshelf filled with blank\, white books which symbolizes the burning and looting of libraries in Baghdad during the 2003 American invasion of Iraq. Museum visitors are invited to transform the shelves from austere white to color by donating a book that will be shipped to the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad at the close of the exhibition. In exchange for a new book (for sale in the Museum Shop) visitors may take home one of the white volumes\, which are meant to serve as a reminder that across the globe many people are denied equal access to knowledge. \nWriter\, curator\, and visual artist Kristina Kay Robinson will discuss the connectivity between Iraq and New Orleans and also read from an original piece of nonfiction about Iraq and events of 9-11. \nWednesday admission is free to all Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nABOUT KRISTINA KAY ROBINSON\nKristina Kay Robinson is a writer\, curator\, and visual artist born and raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Robinson is the is the co-editor of Mixed Company\, a collection of short fiction and visual narratives by women of color. Her writing in various genres has appeared in Guernica\, The Baffler\, The Nation\, and Elle among other publications. She is a 2019 recipient of the Rabkin Prize for Visual Arts Journalism and the current editor of Room 220\, an online multidisciplinary arts journal and program of Antenna Gallery in New Orleans.

SUMMARY:Gallery activation of Wafaa Bilal's 168:01
DESCRIPTION:NOMA curators will be present to discuss artist Wafaa Bilal’s interactive installation 168:01 in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge. The work is comprised of a large bookshelf filled with blank\, white books which symbolizes the burning and looting of libraries in Baghdad during the 2003 American invasion of Iraq. Museum visitors are invited to transform the shelves from austere white to color by donating a book that will be shipped to the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad at the close of the exhibition. In exchange for a new book (for sale in the Museum Shop) visitors may take home one of the white volumes\, which are meant to serve as a reminder that across the globe many people are denied equal access to knowledge. \nWriter\, curator\, and visual artist Kristina Kay Robinson will discuss the connectivity between Iraq and New Orleans and also read from an original piece of nonfiction about Iraq and events of 9-11. \nWednesday admission is free to all Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nABOUT KRISTINA KAY ROBINSON\nKristina Kay Robinson is a writer\, curator\, and visual artist born and raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Robinson is the is the co-editor of Mixed Company\, a collection of short fiction and visual narratives by women of color. Her writing in various genres has appeared in Guernica\, The Baffler\, The Nation\, and Elle among other publications. She is a 2019 recipient of the Rabkin Prize for Visual Arts Journalism and the current editor of Room 220\, an online multidisciplinary arts journal and program of Antenna Gallery in New Orleans.

In his 2012 film Black Mask\, shown on continuous loop in the exhibition\, Wilson slowly obscures his face with black Post-it notes\, asking us to consider the paradoxical ways in which black bodies are both hyper-visible and at the same time erased from dominant histories and narratives. At the end of the video\, the artist peels off all of the sticky notes\, save one\, envisioning how we might make more visible bodies that are often marked by absence. The video is placed into conversation with book publications that document the artist’s self-designed Running Tour performances. Created as a subtle parody of a tourist guidebook\, Wilson snaps photographs without halting his stride along routes that include well-known sightseeing spots as well as indistinct\, ostensibly unremarkable locations. Filled with blurred\, disorienting images\, these books make tangible the tension between traditional forms of historic preservation and the lived experience of contemporary cities. Taken together\, Black Maskand Wilson’s running tours present the body not as a vehicle for self-portraiture\, but rather as a social site able to adapt to and shape the environment it inhabits\, imagining how we might reconfigure the collective spaces\, histories\, and experiences of places such as New Orleans. \nABOUT BRÉVE BRAISES\nIn the installation Brève braises\, artist Manon Bellet affixes the charred remains of burned paper on the walls of the gallery in the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge. From these tattered remains\, she creates a script or musical score that runs across an entire length of a long white wall. Created in collaboration with musicians that Bellet invites to compose an accompanying musical score\, these burned fragments of paper have a graphic dynamism and rhythm that resembles that of improvisational music or impromptu speech. Over the course of her installation\, she allows these papers gradually drop to the floor\, encouraged by movement of air generated by the improvisational energy of bodies and instruments as their movement and vibrations activate the installation. \nMusician Justin Peake will participate in this activation. He is a New Orleans-based drummer\, composer\, technologist\, visual artist\, researcher\, and educator. \nFriday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. The film follows the students from their auditions on through senior year with the hard knocks and victories of lives dedicated to their craft. Fame garnered awards and nominations in a variety of categories\, with particular praise for its title song performed by Irene Cara. It received four Golden Globe Award nominations\, including Best Motion Picture\, Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Cara)\, and Best Original Score (Michael Gore). The film only won one award for Best Original Song (“Fame”). Fame was the last musical film to be produced by MGM\, before the studio merged with United Artists in 1981. The film has been credited with revitalizing the teen musical subgenre by adding dramatic elements into its story\, echoing 1950s melodramas. Its presentation of musical numbers in the style of a music video was a major influence on other 1980s films in the dance film genre

DESCRIPTION:Throughout the run of Bodies of Knowledge\, Mahmoud Chouki will create a new musical composition and series of site-specific performances for the exhibition\, collectively titled Safar\, that explore how music can speak across cultural divides to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West. Chouki will be joined by New Orleans-based bassist and saxophonist Dan Oestreicher. \nAdmission is free for all Louisiana residents on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nABOUT MAHMOUD CHOUKI\nMahmoud Chouki is a master guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer living and working in New Orleans. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. As artistic director of Rencontre Orient-Occident at Chateau Mercier in Sierre\, Switzerland\, Chouki has brought together a wide range of international musicians to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West\, with music often the only common language between performers. \nChouki will conclude the Safar series with a final ensemble concert on Sunday\, October 13 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:As the exhibition Bodies of Knowledge comes to a close\, performance artist Edward Spots will present a short solo dance in the Great Hall. \nABOUT EDWARD SPOTS\nNew Orleans native Edward Spots is an internationally renowned dancer\, choreographer\, and actor. Spots began his dance training with Baderinwa “Mama” Rolland at the very first charter middle school in New Orleans. He has trained extensively\, from NOCCA and New Orleans NORD Centers as a young dancer\, to the Walnut Hill School for the Fine Arts\, The Joffrey Ballet School in New York\, and the Washington School for Ballet in Washington\, DC. In 2010\, he enrolled at the Ailey School\, ultimately becoming part of the Ailey II Company where he performed and taught in the US and abroad in more than 8 countries. He has danced with Urban Ballet Theatre\, New Orleans Ballet Theatre\, Civic Scranton Ballet\, Delaware Dance Company\, and Marigny Opera Ballet\, and has been featured in numerous commercials and television shows. Spots played a lead role in the film America by Garrett Bradley.

Mid-career works were large-scale installations and pioneering immersive\, synchronized media environments including Soul Shadows\, Women Eating\, and The Face of God that premiered at the 1996 Olympics. Sounds great\, huh? We at the NOLA Project thought so\, too—and that’s what we intended for the audience. That is\, until the cast started to be mysteriously killed off…and the crew…and the entire Louisiana Philharmonic that was supposed to take part in the festivities. But the show must go on! By any means necessary… \nCome enjoy this horrifically hilarious Halloween-season production that is part American classic\, part the play that goes wrong\, and all kinds of absurd fun. Written by NOLA Project favorite Pete McElligott\, this new telling is bound to leave you laughing your head off. Perhaps literally. \nThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow runs Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Sundays at 7 pm from October 16 to November 13. All seating is bring-your-own. Food trucks will be available at all performances as well as a fully stocked bar. The renowned New Orleans-based design firm has issued a book showcasing the work of its lead designer and architect known for creating spaces that balance historic detail and modern elegance. \n▶ READ AN INTERVIEW WITH LEDBETTER IN NOMA MAGAZINE \nThe work of architect and interior designer Lee Ledbetter represents a one-of-a-kind combination of traditional details and chic Modernism. Ledbetter established his practice in New Orleans in 1996 and has developed a body of work that emerges from his ability to incorporate historical precedent as well as regional and environmental context\, and his firm has received recognition for its expertise well beyond its Deep South roots. Ledbetter’s interiors and architecture combine a cleanly tailored and bright modernity with the unapologetic embellishments of refined and luxurious decoration. Ledbetter strongly believes design to be a fine art along with painting and sculpture\, and he considers placement and scale of furniture\, artwork\, and lighting as carefully as he does the creation of walls and the spaces they contain. As Mayer Rus\, who provides the text for this title\, once wrote in House & Garden\, “Lee Ledbetter rejects the idea that a serious architect cannot be a dedicated decorator as well.” \n\nA book signing in the Museum Shop will follow the lecture. \n\n\nFriday Nights at NOMA is supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. DESCRIPTION:Singers from the Opéra Nouvelle will perform a variety of works in the setting of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Please bring lawn chairs or blankets for this roving three-part concert that will move from sculpture to sculpture throughout the garden. Seating is bring-your-own. Admission is FREE for this joint production between NOMA and the New Orleans Opera Association. \nThe first selection of works\, themed as “The Classics: Statues and Stories\,” will be performed in the pine grove near the main entrance of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. \nThe second selection of works will be performed in the new expansion of the garden near the sculpture Acute Unequal Angles (2016) by Bernar Venet. Themed as “Trauma\, Loss and Reflections\,” these musical selections will be aligned with the New Orleans Opera Association’s production The Falling and the Rising\, which will address the ramifications of PTSD among war veterans. \nThe final selection of works will be presented in the new amphitheater of the garden expansion\, under the title “Magic and Wonder.” \nPoetry readings will also take place between the musical performances.

DESCRIPTION:Fred Wilson\, an artist best known for his role in refiguring the representation of race in museums\, will join New Orleans-based artist Ron Bechet in conversation at the 2019 Donna Perret Rosen Lecture in Stern Auditorium. \nThe talk is free with museum admission and limited to 180 seats. \nRESERVE SEATS NOW \nABOUT FRED WILSON\n▶ READ AN INTERVIEW WITH FRED WILSON IN NOMA MAGAZINE \nFred Wilson was born in the Bronx in 1954\, and lives and works in New York. He received a BFA from Purchase College\, State University of New York. Commenting on his unorthodox artistic practice\, Wilson has said that\, although he studied art\, he no longer has a strong desire to make things with his hands: “I get everything that satisfies my soul from bringing together objects that are in the world\, manipulating them\, working with spatial arrangements\, and having things presented in the way I want to see them.” Thus\, Wilson creates new exhibition contexts for the display of art and artifacts found in museum collections—including wall labels\, sound\, lighting\, and non-traditional pairings of objects. \n\nHis installations lead viewers to recognize that changes in context create changes in meaning. While appropriating curatorial methods and strategies\, Wilson maintains his subjective view of the museum environment and the works he presents. He questions (and forces the viewer to question) how curators shape interpretations of historical truth\, artistic value\, and the language of display—and what kinds of biases our cultural institutions express. In his groundbreaking intervention\, Mining the Museum (1992)\, Wilson transformed the Maryland Historical Society’s collection to highlight the history of slavery in America. For the 2003 Venice Biennale\, Wilson created a mixed-media installation of many parts—focusing on Africans in Venice and issues and representations of blacks and whites—which included a suite of black glass sculptures; a black-and-white tiled room\, with wall graffiti culled from texts of African-American slave narratives; and a video installation of “Othello\,” screened backwards. \nWilson received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award (1999) and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award (2003). He is the Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Object\, Exhibition\, and Knowledge at Skidmore College. Fred Wilson represented the United States at the Cairo Bienniale (1992) and Venice Biennale. \nABOUT RON BECHET\nRon Bechet\, a native New Orleanian\, is a professional artist and serves as a professor of art at Xavier University of Louisiana. Bechet served as chair of the department for nine years. He holds a B.A. degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans\, and an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the Yale School of Art\, Yale University. He has served on the board of the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans and served as a member of New Orleans Arts Council percent for art committee Public Art Commission Program\, NOCCA Institute Board and many other commissions and boards. \nBechet’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, culminating in a solo show in the summer of 2015 at the Acadiana Art Center in Lafayette called “Sense of Place” in which he examined the visual culture of the African Diaspora. He has collaborated in pieces and exhibitions with John Scott\, with whom he shared studio space for many years. Bechet’s work can be found in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art\, The Pennsylvania College of Art and Design Museum\, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Her sound is reminiscent of such greats as Tina Turner\, Bonnie Raitt\, Louis Armstrong\, Billie Holiday and Patsy Cline. \nABOUT THE QUILTMAKERS OF GEE’S BEND\n\nThis Emmy Award-winning PBS film documents a group of African American quilt artists from Gee’s Bend\, Alabama. The quiltmakers live in a remote community and still inhabit the land their enslaved forebears once worked. The quilts of Gee’s Bend have been hailed by Michael Kimmelman of The New York Times as “some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.” The film explores the extraordinary lives\, inspirations\, and history of the quiltmakers\, including their promotion by art historian Bill Arnett\, and follows them on a poignant and journey to see their work exhibited in a major art museum. DESCRIPTION:Join a Mindfulness course under the instruction of Dr. Jayashree Rao for two days\, Saturday\, November 2\, and Sunday\, November 3\, from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm. Mindfulness is defined as a method of experiencing the present moment with open curiosity\, without judgment\, and with a willingness to be with what is.
