Designed for small groups of no more than twenty students\, classes are organized into three parts and are taught by one or more members of our professional staff. Classes will be held on Tuesdays\, July 17\, 24\, and 31 from 6–8 p.m. \n$150 per series; $125 for members \n This series is SOLD OUT. \nThis class takes the exhibition Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories as a starting point to explore some of the ways in which contemporary artists address historical subjects\, as well as how contemporary art can influence how we feel about our shared histories. \nJULY 17 | HISTORY AND MEMORY \nThe first session provides a framework for approaching contemporary art through the lens of the past\, with an emphasis on major themes and techniques. \nJULY 24 | ART AND THE ARCHIVE \nSession two focuses on how artists use historical objects and artifacts in their work and considers the power of contemporary art to expand our historical understanding. \nJULY 31 | ENVISIONING COMMUNITY \nThe final session looks at artists collaborating with their own communities with a particular focus on artists whose work engages with contemporary social and political issues. \nClasses will be taught by Katie A. KASIMU HARRIS\nL. Kasimu Harris is a storyteller who uses writing\, photography and video to push the narrative. Images from his War on the Benighted series are a part of the group exhibition\, Changing Course: Reflection of New Orleans Histories.  War on the Benighted  is a narrative constructed reality series about New Orleans public school students who became frustrated with the inequalities in education; they rose up and began a quest to educate themselves. Their grievances include the school-to-prison pipeline\, emphasis on standardized testing\, and a diminishing arts curriculum. \nHarris is a New Orleans native who has participated in twenty group exhibitions across the US\, two abroad\, and three solo photography exhibitions. In 2015\, his work was exhibited in both The Rising and Louisiana Contemporary at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and garnered coverage in The New York Times and NPR. He also a featured artist in Dandy Lion (Re) Articulating Black Masculinity\, curated by Shantrelle P. Lewis\, a  traveling exhibition with the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago that has traveled to San Francisco\, Miami\, and London. \nABOUT MR. Studies have shown that students enrolled in Young Audiences programs outperformed their peers on standardized tests\, exhibited fewer disciplinary issues\, and had increased school attendance. \nAbout Wolf Trap Institute\nYoung Audiences / Louisiana Wolf Trap has been an affiliate of The Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts since 2010. The Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts\, a program of the Wolf Trap Foundation\, was established in 1981 under a grant from the Head Start Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services serving children birth through kindergarten. The goal of the Institute is to provide early childhood educators with professional development training in the use of performing arts techniques within educational curriculum goals and outcomes for young children. The infusion of arts-based techniques into daily routines provides powerful teaching strategies that can be used to enhance all areas of development\, including emergent literacy\, self-esteem and socialization\, problem solving\, receptive and expressive language\, motor skills and self-regulation\, science and math\, conceptualization\, and creativity\, in order to provide a solid foundation for all future learning. \n
