DESCRIPTION:NOTE: The Besthoff Sculpture Garden tour on Monday\, February 3\, has been rescheduled for 1 pm. \nJoin NOMA’s docents for a free guided tour of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Mondays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays\, weather dependent. Sited on eleven acres adjacent to the museum\, the garden contains more than ninety works by renowned sculptors placed among a picturesque mature grove of pine\, magnolia\, and moss-draped live oak trees bisected by a lagoon. Represented sculptors include Pierre Auguste Renoir\, Rene Magritte\, Henry Moore\, Isamu Noguchi\, George Rodrigue\, and Robert Indiana\, among others. Meet at the gates to the garden\, which offers free admission year-round.

This exciting music and dance experience formed in 1994 has become beloved in its home city and beyond. Bamboula 2000’s music is influenced by New Orleans\, the Caribbean and Africa. The group has won the prestigious Big Easy Award for Best World Music group three times and has been nominated eight times. In addition\, Bamboula 2000 reaches thousands of children annually through their Imagination Tour dance-and-drum workshops. \nABOUT AKIRASH\nAkirash \nOlaniyi Rasheed Akindiya aka AKIRASH\, was born in Lagos\, Nigeria. He moved to the U.S. in 2011 and now lives in both Lagos and Texas. Reflecting on rural versus urban life\, the accelerated pace of development\, and social infrastructure\, his work explores the personal and the universal\, investigating the invisible systems of power that govern everyday existence. He utilizes a multitude of techniques and materials\, including repurposed objects—which may result in mixed media painting— sculpture\, installation\, video\, photography\, sound\, and performance. \nAKIRASH’s work has been exhibited at the twelfth edition of Dak’Art Biennale in Dakar\, Senegal\,  2016. He also participated in Chale Wote Street Festival in Accra\, Ghana\, in 2013; the International Multimedia Festival in Yagon\, Myanmar\, in 2012; Infecting the City Street Festival\, in Cape Town\, South Africa\, in 2012; and the East Africa Biennale (ESTAFAB) in Dar Sallam\, Tanzania\, in both 2005 and 2007. Visit his website for more information. \nABOUT DANIEL CALLAHAN\nDaniel Callahan \nDaniel Callahan is a Boston-based multimedia artist\, designer\, and filmmaker. Merging a legion of disciplines including painting\, digital photography\, film\, music\, writing and performance\, Callahan works to craft immersive experiences incorporating story\, ritual\, and the human form to explore aspects of resilience and mysticism. Best known for his painterly technique of MassQing—a ritual painting of the face used to reveal rather than conceal one’s inner essence—Callahan’s performance will take place in a semi-enclosed structure with a transparent viewing wall. Audio and video will be used to create a soundscape lasting the duration of the MassQing ritual. \nCallahan’s work hasbeen featured at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\,  The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, the Institute of Contemporary Art\, and the Queens Museum. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design where he received a Bachelors of Applied Science in Fine Arts and Africana Studies\, and Emerson College where he received a Masters in Fine Arts in Film and Video. Daniel is a recipient of the Donor Circle for the Arts Grant and the New England Foundation for the Arts Creative City Grant. \nABOUT JESSICA STRAHAN\nJessica Strahan \nJessica Strahan is a native of New Orleans who is inspired by the vibrancy of the Crescent City as well as the African diaspora. Her artwork consistently depicts the city’s rich culture\, distinctive landmarks\, and colorful people juxtaposed with tribes of the motherland. With works already on the walls of homes in London\, New York\, and Athens\, Strahan is set on sharing her art throughout the world. Recent group exhibitions include Face to Face at LeMieux Galleries\, Soul II Soul\, and Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandelry in New Orleans and Mirrored Migrations at Rush Corridor Gallery in New York. She is the 2019 Art Prize winner for the Louisiana Contemporary and a regional winner of the 2016 Bombay Sapphire Artisan series and displayed during Art Basel | Miami Beach. \nFriday Nights at NOMA is presented by The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate and supported in part by grant funds from the Azby Fund; Ruby K. Hailing from the small town of Montevallo\, Alabama\, Stewart moved to New Orleans in 2011 to immerse herself in a place saturated with jazz and talented musicians. She performs at various local venues and regional festivals with the likes of such award-winning musicians as Cindy Scott\, Jamison Ross\, and Ellis Marsalis. Her upcoming debut album\, Yesterdays\, will be released on March 6\, 2020\, under the Bubble Bath Records label. DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers as we read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books related to art\, artists\, art museums\, NOMA’s collections and exhibitions. Our full 2020 schedule and reading list has been announced. \nOrganized by NOMA’s Felix J. Dreyfous Library\, the Book Club is an informal group. You do not have to attend every meeting and we understand if you have to leave a discussion or program early. The book club offers several types of programs: a book discussion group that meets once a month (no reading in December)\, curatorial programs\, field trips\, and Meet the Author receptions. Most book club programs start promptly at noon\, but please arrive at 11:30 a.m. if you wish to bring a sack lunch or meet beforehand. He builds for them a home to embody their exuberant faith in the future\, and the Landauer House becomes an instant masterpiece. The honesty and idealism of 1930 quickly evaporate with the onset of World War II\, and the marriage also shows signs of strain. This family must leave their old life behind\, but the house’s story is far from over. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nBenjamin Benus\, an associate professor of art and design history at Loyola University in New Orleans\, specializes in the history of twentieth-century art and design\, with a focus on Central Europe in the years between the world wars. His research examines connections between avant-garde art\, scientific illustration\, and data visualization during this period. This talk will be held in NOMA’s boardroom on the second floor. \nAs director of the Bauhaus printing and advertising workshop from 1925 to 1928\, the Austrian-born artist Herbert Bayer helped to shape the school’s distinctive approach to graphic design. This talk\, presented in conjunction with the exhibition An Ideal Unity: The Bauhaus and Beyond\, considers how Bayer\, following his immigration to the United States in 1938\, continued to explore and develop Bauhaus design principles within a variety of media\, including book illustration\, advertising\, and exhibition design. \n

With the admonition to “write this down\,” Williams began to describe how slaves made coded quilts and used them to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nYu Jiang\, Director of the Confucius Institute at Xavier University\, will discuss the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society. \nAs the inaugural director\, Dr. Jiang has led the Confucius Institute at Xavier University since May 2012. Under his leadership\, the Confucius Institute has become the leading Chinese-language instruction center in the state of Louisiana and the go-to platform on Chinese culture\, history\, and travel for local government agencies\, civic groups\, and non-profit organizations. Dr. Jiang received his B.A. in Archaeology from Beijing University in 1997\, and Ph.D. in Chinese Art History from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in 2004.  His research investigates bronze and jade art of early dynastic China\, particularly the Western Zhou from the eleventh to eighth centuries BCE\, with focus on material culture\, identity\, and socio-political discourse.  His publications cover much later periods as well\, including the casting technology of bronze drums from Southeast Asia.

Studies have shown that students enrolled in Young Audiences programs outperformed their peers on standardized tests\, exhibited fewer disciplinary issues\, and had increased school attendance. \nAbout Wolf Trap Institute\nYoung Audiences / Louisiana Wolf Trap has been an affiliate of The Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts since 2010. The Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts\, a program of the Wolf Trap Foundation\, was established in 1981 under a grant from the Head Start Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services serving children birth through kindergarten. The goal of the Institute is to provide early childhood educators with professional development training in the use of performing arts techniques within educational curriculum goals and outcomes for young children. The infusion of arts-based techniques into daily routines provides powerful teaching strategies that can be used to enhance all areas of development\, including emergent literacy\, self-esteem and socialization\, problem solving\, receptive and expressive language\, motor skills and self-regulation\, science and math\, conceptualization\, and creativity\, in order to provide a solid foundation for all future learning. \n

DESCRIPTION:Throughout the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society\, artists influenced by Asian art will offer their perspective on the objects on view. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nRaised in Cleveland\, MaPo Kinnord earned a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and a MFA from Ohio State University. From 1984 to 1992\, she taught ceramics and produced functional ceramics in Massachusetts and Berkeley\, California. She moved to Louisiana in 1995 and is currently an associate professor of art at Xavier University of Louisiana. She continues to create ceramic sculpture and develop art education projects at her studio in New Orleans.
