SUMMARY:Elders Sacred Talk Series with Kalamu ya Salaam and Big Chief Victor Harris
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives initiative for adults 55 and older is proud to partner with the Congo Square Preservation Society to present the Elders Sacred Talk Series\, four panel discussions with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while learning firsthand about the impact they’ve had on the city. \nJoin us on September 6\, at 5:30 pm in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts for the first program featuring our first two honorees of the series: poet\, author\, and scholar Kalamu ya Salaam and Victor Harris\, Big Chief of the Mandingo Warriors/Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi. Freddi Williams Evans of the Congo Square Preservation Society will moderate the conversation. Doors open at 5 pm. \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \n\nAbout the Speakers\nKalamu ya Salaam\nKalamu ya Salaam was born Val Ferdinand III in New Orleans on March 24\, 1947. Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans\, Salaam became interested in writing and organizing for social change. During the Black Arts Movement\, Salaam was a member of John O’Neal’s Free Southern Theater for five years and founded BLACKARTSOUTH. Changing his name along the way to Kalamu ya Salaam\, which is Kiswahili for “pen of peace\,” he founded Ahidiana Work Study Center. He also assumed the editorship of the Black Collegian magazine\, a post he held from 1970 to 1983. Salaam published cultural and political essays in Black World\, Black Scholar\, and Black Books Bulletin. In 1977\, he was part of the first African American activist delegation to the People’s Republic of China. \nToday\, he is a senior partner of Bright Moments\, a public relations firm. He is also the founder of WordBand\, a poetry performance group; the NOMMO Literary Society; and Runagate Press. Salaam has written seven books of poetry. Louisiana State University honored his play The Breath of Life\, and BLK Love Song #1 won a Best of Fringe Award from The Manchester Evening News in England. A respected music writer and critic\, he is the arts and entertainment editor for The New Orleans Tribune. He regularly contributes to Wavelength\, The Louisiana Weekly\, and The New Orleans Music Magazine. He was executive director of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for many years and produced A NATION OF POETS for the National Black Arts Festival. \nBig Chief Victor Harris\nHaving begun suiting as a Black Masking Indian at age fifteen\, Victor Harris is the longest continuously suiting Black Masking Indian alive with over 50 years of suiting\, following the untimely death of Chief of Chiefs Allison “Tootie” Montana\, Big Chief of the Yellow Pocahontas. A Flagboy for the Yellow Pocahontas tribe since the mid-1960s\, Harris became Big Chief of his tribe\, the Mandingo Warriors\, in 1984\, after the epiphanic first calling of the Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi\, originally wearing a black suit. Today\, Harris is one of the most recognizable chiefs in the city and a community leader. \n\nAbout Congo Square Preservation Society\nThe Congo Square Preservation Society serves as a continuing catalyst in the resurrection and continuation of activities\, advocacy\, and preservation of historic and sacred Congo Square in New Orleans. Learn more at https://www.congosquarepreservationsociety.org/. \n \n\nNOMA’s Art Thrives programs are supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Wang Qingsong

Although photography is his main medium\, he has explored performance and video art in more recent years. \nQingsong’s photography is influenced by the visual vocabulary of western advertising\, as well as propaganda imagery of the Chinese Communist regime’s Cultural Revolution. The artist harks back to scroll painting\, an ancient Chinese artform\, as well as European old master paintings. \nWang Qingsong was born in north-eastern China in 1966. SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Celebration with Ecos Latinos
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ecos Latinos\, NOMA hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration featuring a night of music in the Lapis Center for the Arts. Doors open at 6:00 pm\, and performances begin at 7:00 pm. Light bites will be available from Empanola\, as well as a cash bar with specialty cocktails from Café NOMA. \n$10 general admission | $5 for NOMA members \nPurchase Tickets \n\nFrom the Performers\nFermin Ceballos Quartet\nFermin Ceballos studied music at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and was a professor of music at the Ministry of Culture\, National System of Free Schools of the Dominican Republic. His primary musical instruments are the accordion\, guitar\, piano\, and voice. Fermín continually works on several musical projects in the Gulf-South\, such as Merengue4-FOUR\, a musical project showcasing Dominican Music (Bachata & Merengue Típico)\, Fermín’s Latin Fusion Orchestra\, performing original salsa-inspired compositions and Fermín Acústico\, a musical concept interlacing melodies and harmonies with guitar and voice. With all his projects\, he performs original compositions based on his fusion of different sounds and musical rhythms. In 2018\, Fermín wrote YO VENGO DE TODO LADO (I Come From Everywhere) to honor and celebrate our immigrant diversity\, and the National TPS (Temporary Protective Status) Alliance adopted it as their anthem. In 2019\, he released his first book of poems in Spanish and English entitled “Pisando Mi Sombra” (Walking My Shadow). At the start of the 2020 pandemic shutdown\, Fermín began composing and self-producing his debut solo album. BOCHINCE was released in 2021 and can stream on all online platforms. The album features 14 tracks of original music. \nLeonard Jacome\nLeonard Jacome was born in Rubio\, Táchira State\, Venezuela. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, arranger\, composer\, producer\, and one of the World’s most prolific and accomplished harpists. He has won numerous awards representing Venezuela abroad and has toured and performed throughout Latin America\, the United States\, South Africa\, Europe\, Africa\, Japan\, Malaysia\, and the United Kingdom (UK). Leonard is also working to develop a contemporary identity for the South American harp. He is the creator/inventor of the Venezuelan electric harp\, with the support of Camac-Harps of France. Leonard is a Composer and arranger of musical works for the Philharmonic Orchestra and “Big Band Jazz.” \nCristina Kaminis\nChristina Kaminis is a Mexican/American singer currently living in New Orleans. Her musical style ranges in genre and languages with hints of Mexican ranchera llanto to Blues\, American Standards\, and French chansons\, as well as Brazilian sounds and rhythms (most of the band hails from Brazil). \nPatrice Fisher\nLatin jazz harpist/composer Patrice Fisher favors the music of New Orleans\, Brazil\, and Cuba\, saying that not only is the harp ‘comfortable’ harmonically with the music but that elf is drawn to the rhythmic complexities and syncopations: “that’s what makes you want to dance.” Patrice has 16 CDs of original music\, the latest being “Happy Socks.” She has performed for over 35 years at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. “An unexpected delight!” raves David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine. Gene Scaramuzzo of Gambit newspaper says\, “There are many sides to this local composer/harpist. It’s not unusual to see her play a classical gig in the morning and a music club at night. Strong rhythms form the undercurrent of her instrumental music with Arpa.” \nMariangel & Derik\, Liquid Rhythm Inc.\nMariangel was born in Venezuela\, and Derik was born in New Orleans. Liquid Rhythm Inc. originally began as a performance-based dance company out of New Orleansix with six core members consisting of local dancers with various dance backgrounds\, such as Hip-Hop\, House\, Modern\, Jazz\, Contemporary\, Folkloric\, and Ballet\, to name a few. LRI wanted to set itself apart from other Salsa dance companies by infusing movements each member knew from previous dance forms into the technical frameworks of the many Salsa styles they studied. Most importantly\, have FUN while doing so! LRI doesn’t believe that one style of Salsa or dance is better. They all possess unique qualities that give them such flare and appeal. \n\nAbout Ecos Latinos\nEcos Latinos is a monthly performance series featuring Hispanic musicians\, poets\, dancers\, and visual artists—both local and international—at schools\, hospitals\, libraries\, and festivals in Louisiana. Additionally\, Ecos Latinos produces professionally edited documentary videos showcasing the music of Louisiana composers. \nLearn More \n\nAdditional Credits\nThe Ecos Latinos Hispanic Heritage Celebration is produced by Musicians for Music and the New Orleans Museum of Art. \nSupport comes from South Arts\, the City of New Orleans\, New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund\, French Market Corporation\, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation\, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy\, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Louisiana Division of the Arts and the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. How is a Chinese dragon robe a diagram of the whole universe? What is the difference between how the Greek Fates and the Viking Norns used threads to tell our destiny? \nIn Fabric\, bestselling author Victoria Finlay spins us round the globe\, weaving stories of our relationship with cloth and asking how and why people through the ages have made it\, worn it\, invented it\, and made symbols out of it. And sometimes why they have fought for it. She beats the inner bark of trees into cloth in Papua New Guinea\, fails to handspin cotton in Guatemala\, visits tweed weavers at their homes in Harris\, and has lessons in patchwork-making in Gee’s Bend\, Alabama – where in the 1930s\, deprived of almost everything they owned\, a community of women turned quilting into an art form. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion\, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily\, befriending fashion’s most important designers (Halston\, Yves Saint Laurent\, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends\, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. \nThere\, he eventually became creative director\, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogue’s masthead\, André also ascended\, and soon became the most influential man in fashion. \n The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the who’s who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic\, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how André not only survived the brutal style landscape but thrived—despite racism\, illicit rumors\, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry—to become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion. SUMMARY:Art Thrives Color Theory Workshop (Ages 55 and up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. \nThe power of color in a painting cannot be underestimated. Be it subdued\, bright\, or absent\, it is a key component of any artwork. Along with the ability to mix colors together\, understanding color theory allows one to not only create unity\, but also to convey emotion in a painting. \nColor can be intimidating for beginning painters\, and color theory is a body of principles that provide guidance on the relationship between colors and the physiological impacts of certain color combinations. As an artist\, one does not necessarily need to be concerned with the complex underlying principles of color theory\, but you should understand general applications of color theory and color relationships. \nIn this workshop\, we will use the basic concepts of color theory to learn about how we perceive color. Many of her colorful paintings represent humanity’s sometimes detached relationship with nature within an urban environment. Working primarily in oils and mixed media\, the emotional impact of color and color relationships is as important as the subject matter itself in her paintings. Recent work is especially concerned with the balance between saturated and muted hues depicted in her abstracted compositions. \n\nNOMA’s Art Thrives programs are supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in City Park for Young Audiences of Louisiana’s Baby Artsplay! Presented by The Helis Foundation on Sunday\, October 22. This multi-modal family workshop will include singing\, moving\, and manipulatives. \nAfter the workshop\, please visit other pieces by Lynda Benglis inside NOMA\, including Wing\, which the museum acquired in 2015 with support from The Helis Foundation. \nRegister now \nThis workshop is free\, thanks to support provided by The Helis Foundation. Space is limited so register today to reserve your spot. \nAbout Lynda Benglis’s Wave of the World\nLynda Benglis\, born in Louisiana\, is an American sculptor and visual artist known especially for her wax paintings and poured latex sculptures. Following the 1984 New Orleans World’s Fair\, her Wave of the World sculpture sat hidden for decades in a former sewage treatment plant in the City of Kenner outside of New Orleans. The Wave suffered years of neglect that led to surface damage and the loss of a large section of the base. \nWith the permission of Kenner\, which owns the sculpture\, and the funding of The Helis Foundation\, Benglis personally undertook and supervised the complete restoration of the work in the summer of 2014. The piece was returned to the Modern Art Foundry in New York where Benglis originally created and cast the work. \nBenglis worked with 1983-84 team member\, Bob Spring\, and his son\, Jeffrey\, present director of Modern Art Foundry\, to pour a new base\, restore the original patina\, and repair the internal plumbing of the fountain. In October of 2015\, The Wave of the World (The Wave) returned to public view in City Park’s “Big Lake.” \n\nAbout Young Audiences of Louisiana\nYoung Audiences of Louisiana (YALA) is the leading provider of arts education and integration programs in the state of Louisiana. SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion: The Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir
You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor information or questions about the NOMA Book Club\, please email education@noma.org. \nRegister Now \n\nOctober 2023\nBook Club Discussion | Thursday\, October 26\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir by André Leon Talley\nBallantine Books\, 2021\, ISBN-13: 978-0593129272 \nDuring André Leon Talley’s first magazine job\, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview\, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic\, often caustic designer. SUMMARY:Elders Sacred Talk Series with Ronnie Moore and Doratha “Dodie” Smith Simmons
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives initiative and the Congo Square Preservation Society present the Elders Sacred Talk Series with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while learning firsthand about the impact they’ve had on the city. \nOn November 1\, 5:30 pm\, in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts\, the program will highlight Civil Rights activists Ronnie Moore and Doratha “Dodie” Smith Simmons. Doors open at 5 pm. \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \nTo book your ticket in advance\, click the link above. \n\nAbout the Speakers\n\nRonnie Moore\nRonnie Moore is a veteran civil rights activist\, community developer\, and photographer. At the age of 15\, he and his peers attempted to integrate a public park in his hometown of New Orleans. In 1961\, while a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, he led a group of 2\,500 students to the state capitol to protest the city's hiring policies and segregated lunch counters. That activism led to his arrest and expulsion from the university and prompted his full-time commitment to CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality). Moore worked as a field secretary for CORE from 1961 to 1965\, which included establishing voter registration initiatives in parts of Louisiana. From 1965 – 1973\, he worked as the executive director of the Scholarship\, Education and Defense Fund for Racial Equality\, Inc. Moore also served as the director of the Institute for Resident Initiatives at Tulane University from 1996 to 2005 and the director of the African American Youth Congress from 1982 to 1994. During his lifetime of activism\, Moore was arrested over 17 times and held in solitary confinement for 56 days for advocating for voting rights in Louisiana. \n\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons joined New Orleans chapter of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) in 1961 when she was 14 or 15 years old. It was one of the most active chapters in the region and she became a very active member participating in sit-ins and picketing. Her participation resulted in police arresting her several times. Her dedication led her to become a Freedom Rider and test the law that made segregation on public buses unconstitutional. She and other members of the New Orleans CORE rode a bus from New Orleans to McComb\, MS where they were met with severe violence and some of them suffered life-threatening injuries. “After the rides\, Smith-Simmons trained freedom riders and taught members how to participate in nonviolent protests. In the ‘60s\, she also worked to integrate hotels and Florida beaches and participated in the March on Washington.
