DESCRIPTION:Every week\, NOMA hosts gallery talks in the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden led by curators\, artists\, and other special guests. These lively\, participatory conversations provide a moment to take a close look at one work—or a selection of works—currently on view. \nThis week\, join Erika Witt\, Director and Chief Curator of Southern University at New Orleans Museum of Art\, for a gallery talk on works in the exhibition New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations. \nWitt will lead two iterations of this gallery talk: the first from 12:30-1:00 PM\, and the second from 6:00-6:30 pm the same evening. \nIncluded with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the appropriate location. \n\nAbout Erika Witt\nErika Witt is the Director and Chief Curator of the Southern University at New Orleans Museum of Art (SUNOMA) and serves as an adjunct professor in SUNO’s Master of Arts in Museum Studies program. She specializes in traditional African art and Egyptology\, with a focus on preserving and interpreting African material culture within museums and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Erika’s work emphasizes the importance of accessibility\, representation\, and cultural continuity across academic and museum settings. Her mission is to make museums and global heritage inclusive and accessible—particularly for communities historically excluded from institutional narratives. Through exhibitions\, public programming\, and academic engagement\, her curatorial practice foregrounds representation\, cultural stewardship\, and diasporic storytelling.

DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions.  \nIt is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nStrapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X\nby Deborah Davis\n\n\nThe subject of John Singer Sargent’s most famous painting was twenty-three-year-old New Orleans Creole Virginie Gautreau\, who moved to Paris and quickly became the “it girl” of her day. A relative unknown at the time\, Sargent won the commission to paint her; the two must have recognized in each other a like-minded hunger for fame. \nUnveiled at the 1884 Paris Salon\, Gautreau’s portrait generated the attention she craved-but it led to infamy rather than stardom. Sargent had painted one strap of Gautreau’s dress dangling from her shoulder\, suggesting either the prelude to or the aftermath of sex. Her reputation irreparably damaged\, Gautreau retired from public life\, destroying all the mirrors in her home. \nDrawing on documents from private collections and other previously unexamined materials\, and featuring a cast of characters including Oscar Wilde and Richard Wagner\, Strapless is a tale of art and celebrity\, obsession and betrayal.

God gave Mr. Walker a vision of the youth and young adults of the city of New Orleans together. With all the calamities occurring daily in our world\, nation\, state\, and city we need healing. Healing of the mind\, body\, and soul indefinitely amongst our youth and young adults. NuNation was birthed out of a need being met. Mr. Walker then put the word out and on a Thursday night in January 2024 a group of young people met at Union Bethel AME Church\, and the group was formed. A group of youth and young adults who desire to grow closer to God and spread the gospel through praise and song make up Nu Nation Choir. \nThe choir rehearses weekly to produce skillful vocals\, energetic performances\, and a captivating style. As a direct result of making music as a team\, Nu Nation has created the opportunity to build and cultivate lasting friendships. Andrea Lewicki from the Special Agent Collage Collective will introduce the Locative Collage Project taking place during the festival. Nikola Janevski will present their collaboration with Andrea Burgay that looks to bring collage into the fashion world. \nSacred Mother Space Gallery Walk with Creative Assembly member LaVonna Varnado-Brown \nFirst Floor\, Ella West Freeman Galleries\n11:15 am – 12:15 pm\nLaVonna Varnado-Brown will lead a gallery walk of the museum  that “honors the Divine Mothers through visual spellcasting. The tour will include some works in the New African Masquerades exhibition as well as works in the Afropolitan: Contemporary African Arts at NOMA exhibition. Varnado-Brown is a 2024-2025 Creative Assembly artist-in-residence. “NOMA’s Creative Assembly residency promotes community engagement by welcoming artists to collaborate throughout the year with the museum’s permanent collection\, special exhibitions\, and programs.” During the Sacred Mother Space Gallery Walk\, Varnado-Brown will share her experience as a resident artist.  \nPreserving Family History workshop with Nayla Maaruf\nSecond Floor\, Frederick R. Weisman Galleries\n11:30 am –12:15 pm\nNayla Maaruf\, NOMA’s Conservator of Photographs and Works of Art on Paper\, will share her knowledge on disaster preparation at home for family photos and documents\, which also applies to artists with a paper-based practice. Maaruf will also entertain questions from artists who have material concerns about their artwork.  \nVictorian Scrapbook House for Paper Dolls with Beverly Gordon\nLapis Center for the Arts\n1:00 pm –1:30 pm\nDuring her thirty-year career in academia\, Englewood\, Florida artist\, writer\, and educator Beverly Gordon focused a global lens on art identified as domestic and “women’s work”. In this session\, Gordon will present on collages found in late Victorian scrapbook houses. She writes: “These were collage book albums\, ostensibly made as paper doll houses\, which featured double-page spreads representing different rooms in a house. The cover of a given album served as the front door\, the next pages represented the front hall\, and so on into the inner rooms of the home and garden. The furnishings of the rooms consisted of images cut out from trade catalogs\, newspapers and other visual material\, which was ubiquitous in the late 19th century. Scrapbook houses are related to Victorian photocollage\, but the genre stands alone as a particularized tradition.” \nGallery Tour of Nicolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan\, Mississippi Watershed with Curator Brian Piper\nSecond Floor\, Zita and Luther Templemann Galleries  \n1:oo pm \nBrian Piper\, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs\, Prints\, and Drawings\, will lead a gallery tour of the exhibition Nicolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan\, Mississippi Watershed. French artist Nicolas Floc’h’s Fleuves-Océan project traces the movement of water across our planet\, exploring its flow through varied habitats and representing the ways we are all connected by water cycles and systems. On display are vibrant monochromatic photographs of the color of water made under the surface paired with dramatic black-and-white landscape photographs made along the banks of the Mississippi and its tributaries—from Louisiana and across the country. Floc’h documented the entire span of the Mississippi during a 2022 Villa Albertine artist residency in the United States in collaboration with the Camargo Foundation and Artconnexion. This exhibition\, organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art\, illustrates the importance of a network of water that links people across the entire continent. Floc’h’s photography translates important scientific concerns—such as climate change and the looming water crisis—into an overwhelming aesthetic experience\, without sacrificing any urgency or insistence.  \nLearn more about the exhibition here. \nSymbols on a Cave Wall: Storytelling & Collage with Andrea Lewicki\, Carolyn E. Oliver\, Jordan Cerminara\, Kirk Read\, and Erica Trabold\nLapis Center for the Arts\n1:45 pm – 2:45 pm  \nStorytelling is a fundamental part of the human experience. Every culture does it\, sometimes in wildly different ways. From painted symbols on a cave wall to role playing video games\, people are telling stories but also sharing vital information\, conveying ethics and morality\, or building a cosmology that explains the world in which we live. In this panel\, we will hear from artists whose practice is deeply involved with storytelling and collage. \nDocent guided Tour of New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\nFirst Floor\, Ella West Freeman Galleries \n2:00 pm \nNew African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations is a major exhibition presenting the works of four contemporary artists working in cities across West Africa: Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa\, Sheku “Goldenfinger” Fofanah\, David Sanou\, and Hervé Youmbi. Learn more about the exhibition here. \nFor collage artists and enthusiasts\, New African Masquerades is an opportunity to see artwork by contemporary African artists whose practice is rooted in ancestral traditions\, embedded in communities\, performed live for people in performances\, processions\, and other ceremonies. “Looking at these artworks through the lens of collage\, we can see how the artists are creating a bridge between the past and the present\, mixing contemporary media with a traditional visual language\, and creating dynamic experiences for the viewers they encounter. What does it mean to think of art objects as living entities?” said Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour. “The exhibition also invites us to reflect on how we think about historical and contemporary art from Africa and how these objects make their way into European and North American institutions.” \nWhere are we?: Collage Artists & a Sense of Place\nLapis Center for the Arts\n3:00 pm – 4:00 pm \nIn Lure of the Local\, Lucy Lippart wrote\, “When we know where we are\, we’re in a far better position to understand what other cultural groups are experiencing within a time and place we all share.” Where are we? Modern life is fundamentally diasporic in nature. Understanding place is critical to survival and resilience in the 21st century where hostile factors of climate change\, late-stage capitalism\, and rising authoritarianism threaten community cohesion already stressed by Modernity.  \nEach of the four artists in the New African Masquerades exhibition contribute to a sense of place in their communities. They draw on traditions\, folklore\, and religious practices. They use symbols and imagery familiar to their communities. Their performances bring people together and offer the opportunity to connect with ancestral traditions and create shared memories for the future. All of these things foster a sense of place. And each of these artists operate from the now\, putting that sense of place in conversation with the Modern lives in which their communities exist.   \n In this session\, we will hear from four artists whose work also speaks to a sense of place. \n\nAbout Kolaj Institute\nKolaj Institute is a 501c3 Louisiana-based\, non-profit organization whose mission is to support artists\, curators\, and writers who seek to study\, document\, & disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium\, a genre\, a community\, and a 21st century movement. The institute also publishes Kolaj Magazine\, a quarterly\, printed\, art magazine reviewing and surveying contemporary collage with an international perspective.

These lively\, participatory conversations provide a moment to take a close look at one work—or a selection of works—currently on view. \nThis week\, join Creative Assembly member Lavonna Varnado-Brown on the Second Floor Mezzanine to discuss the Black Madonnas in the exhibition Carlo Saraceni’s “Our Lady of Loreto” and Peruvian Viceregal Statue Paintings. Varrnado-Brown will highlight Saraceni’s work “Our Lady of Loreto/Nuestra Señora de Loreto\,” exploring themes of the divine feminine\, Syncretism\, and the artist’s influences. We will reflect on the gradual process of adoption and adaptation of this iconography by Indigenous and Mestizo artists in Viceregal Peru in the creation of Marian images. In the past\, “Our Lady of Loreto” has been exhibited as a Peruvian work created during the Viceregal Period (1542-1824)\, and NOMA has played a crucial role in  exhibiting the work more accurately as Italian Baroque painting dated to 1600\, created while the Venetian artist was active in Rome. \nThis talk will be held at 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm. \nIncluded with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the appropriate location. \n\nAbout Lavonna Varnado-Brown\nLavonna Varnado-Brown\, Creative Assembly 2025 \nLaVonna Varnado Brown is a multidisciplinary artist and community worker.She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. LaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance.

Devezin is an artist and educator born and raised in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans\, LA. She earned her BA from Dillard University and MFA from Southern Methodist University. Heavily influenced by her upbringing in the city\, Jer’Lisa’s work engages research through a black feminist lens centering identity\, sexuality\, Black studies\, and Southern culture\, specifically focusing on New Orleans and socioeconomics. Devezin’s practice integrates ceramic and sculptural processes such as welded steel\, woven forms\, cast slip\, plaster\, and metal. Her research on materials like clay\, metal\, and fibers engages with the function of materiality and is intentionally used to coexist and initiate conversations between the viewer and the work. Devezin is based in New Orleans and works as an Assistant Professor of Art at Tulane University.

Featured with her is one of her personal dolls from the Unclaimed Memories Hurricane Katrina collection. \nRukiya calls her art a type of therapy—that healing begins with herself and goes out to others. All of her artwork is an offering to the community of Color\, to inform and inspire based on her research\, weaving in the majesty of life. Rukiya treats none of her creations as a “job” in the traditional sense; it’s more the joy of the experience while doing. She is perhaps then a mixed media artist in the truest form. \nGifted as a quilter and storyteller of quilts\, art and fashion designer\, and master beader as well\, her talents are sought by novices\, major art enthusiasts\, and wealthy collectors. Rukiya has participated in New Orleans JazzFest for many years\, winning numerous awards. She is acknowledging her Chahta American Indian bloodline ancestry. She masks with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux’s Golden Eagles tribe\, and she fully represents the New Orleans culture of masking Mardi Gras InJun. \nRukiya’s Mardi Gras InJun suit When People Could Fly (2014) was acquired by the New Orleans Museum of Art. The White Buffalo Calf Woman (2017) suit is a part of the permanent exhibit at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac\, in Paris\, France. The Metamorphosis (2013) was featured in Tina Freeman’s award-winning book\, Artist Spaces:NEW Orleans (Louisiana Artists).

The first presentation of its kind\, New African Masquerades offers a rare look into contemporary West African masquerade by contextualizing the works of individual artists within a range of social\, economic\, and religious practices and examining their networks of viewership and exchange. \nLearn More \nAbout Kumasi\nKumasi is New Orleans’ own full Afrobeat orchestra. These lively\, participatory conversations provide a moment to take a close look at one work—or a selection of works—currently on view. \nThis week\, join artist Thameur Mejri for a conversation about works in the exhibition Afropolitan: Contemporary African Arts at NOMA\, which features Mejri’s 2018 work titled “Untitled (Eroded Grounds).” This talk will be offered at 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm. \nIncluded with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the appropriate location. \n\nAbout Thameur Mejri\n \nThameur Mejri investigates complexities of human existence by identifying parallels between paradoxical ideas of violence\, innocence\, guilt and shame. He blurs the boundaries between public and private in an effort to confront individual and collective values\, particularly in contemporary Tunisian society. Mejri examines what happens in the painting and through the painting\, where indifference bids farewell\, and affect becomes activated; it strikes back with force. \nHe has exhibited widely\, including the 13th Cairo Biennial\, Cairo\, Egypt / Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art\, Dakar\, Senegal / The New Orleans Museum of Art\, New Orleans\, USA / The Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon\, France / N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art\, Detroit\, USA / New York International Independent Film and Video Festival\, New York\, USA / Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) L.I.\, New York\, USA. He also has had solo exhibitions at Jack Bell Gallery\, London\, UK / Gallery 1957\, Accra\, Ghana / Selma Feriani Gallery\, Tunis\, Tunisia / B7L9 Art Station. The Kamel Lazaar Foundation\, Tunis\, Tunisia / Montague Contemporary\, New York\, USA / Uitstalling Art Gallery\, Genk\, Belgium. \nMejri’s graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis\, and he is currently teaching at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Nabeul.

DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions.  \nIt is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nRegister Now \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nRolland Golden: Life\, Love\, and Art in the French Quarter\nby Rolland Golden\n\n\nIn the early twentieth century\, the French Quarter had become home to a vibrant community of working artists attracted to the atmosphere\, architecture\, and colorful individuals who populated the scene (and who also became some of its first preservationists). Louisiana native Rolland Golden was one of these artists to live\, work\, and raise a family in this most storied corner of New Orleans. With 94 black-and-white and 54 color photographs and illustrations\, his memoir of that life focuses on the period of 1955 to 1976. Golden\, a painter\, discusses the particular challenges of making a living from art\, and his story becomes a family affair involving his daughters and his beloved wife\, Stella. \nGolden’s studio sat in a patio on Royal Street\, around the corner from Preservation Hall where old-time musicians played Dixieland Jazz. Golden sketched and painted many of them in a visual style that encompassed realism and gradually developed into abstract realism. Golden recalls work that he did in historic preservation\, sketching architecture for publications such as the Vieux Carré Courier\, and he discusses his studies with renowned regionalist painter John McCrady. The artist frankly discusses his experiences with the display\, representation\, and sale of his work\, presenting a little-explored and yet crucial part of a working artist’s life. The memoir concludes with Golden and his wife traveling to the premiere of his exhibition in Moscow\, having been selected by a Russian envoy as the only American artist to have a one-man touring exhibition in the former Soviet Union. Among the nearly 150 black-and-white and color illustrations are never-before-seen photos and sketches by the artist.
