SUMMARY:Book Club: Luncheon of the Boating Party
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions.  \nIt is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nRegister Now \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nLuncheon of the Boating Party\nby Susan Vreeland\n\n\nLuncheon of the Boating Party\, the novel and the painting\, depicts the summer of 1880\, an exuberant postwar time when social constraints were loosening\, Paris was healing\, and Parisians were bursting with a desire for pleasure. The fourteen people on the terrace overlooking the Seine enjoying this moment of la vie moderne are Renoir’s very real friends\, my characters\, whose lives unfold and connect during the course of the making of the painting.

DESCRIPTION:Every week\, NOMA hosts gallery talks in the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden led by curators\, artists\, and other special guests. These lively\, participatory conversations provide a moment to take a close look at one work—or a selection of works—currently on view. \nThis week\, join Creative Assembly member Lavonna Varnado-Brown on the Second Floor Mezzanine to discuss the Black Madonnas in the exhibition Carlo Saraceni’s “Our Lady of Loreto” and Peruvian Viceregal Statue Paintings. Varrnado-Brown will highlight Saraceni’s work “Our Lady of Loreto/Nuestra Señora de Loreto\,” exploring themes of the divine feminine\, Syncretism\, and the artist’s influences. We will reflect on the gradual process of adoption and adaptation of this iconography by Indigenous and Mestizo artists in Viceregal Peru in the creation of Marian images. In the past\, “Our Lady of Loreto” has been exhibited as a Peruvian work created during the Viceregal Period (1542-1824)\, and NOMA has played a crucial role in  exhibiting the work more accurately as Italian Baroque painting dated to 1600\, created while the Venetian artist was active in Rome. \nThis talk will be held at 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm. \nIncluded with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the appropriate location. \n\nAbout Lavonna Varnado-Brown\nLavonna Varnado-Brown\, Creative Assembly 2025 \nLaVonna Varnado Brown is a multidisciplinary artist and community worker.She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. LaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance.

Devezin is an artist and educator born and raised in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans\, LA. She earned her BA from Dillard University and MFA from Southern Methodist University. Heavily influenced by her upbringing in the city\, Jer’Lisa’s work engages research through a black feminist lens centering identity\, sexuality\, Black studies\, and Southern culture\, specifically focusing on New Orleans and socioeconomics. Devezin’s practice integrates ceramic and sculptural processes such as welded steel\, woven forms\, cast slip\, plaster\, and metal. Her research on materials like clay\, metal\, and fibers engages with the function of materiality and is intentionally used to coexist and initiate conversations between the viewer and the work. Devezin is based in New Orleans and works as an Assistant Professor of Art at Tulane University.

When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the appropriate location. \n\nAbout Elenora “Rukiya” Brown\nRukiya is an artist and designer\, recognized among her peers and protégés for fusing both historical influence from People of Color traditions with contemporary times. She is internationally known for making beautiful “soft sculptures” Mardi Gras InJun suits. Featured with her is one of her personal dolls from the Unclaimed Memories Hurricane Katrina collection. \nRukiya calls her art a type of therapy—that healing begins with herself and goes out to others. All of her artwork is an offering to the community of Color\, to inform and inspire based on her research\, weaving in the majesty of life. Rukiya treats none of her creations as a “job” in the traditional sense; it’s more the joy of the experience while doing. She is perhaps then a mixed media artist in the truest form. \nGifted as a quilter and storyteller of quilts\, art and fashion designer\, and master beader as well\, her talents are sought by novices\, major art enthusiasts\, and wealthy collectors. Rukiya has participated in New Orleans JazzFest for many years\, winning numerous awards. She is acknowledging her Chahta American Indian bloodline ancestry. She masks with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux’s Golden Eagles tribe\, and she fully represents the New Orleans culture of masking Mardi Gras InJun. \nRukiya’s Mardi Gras InJun suit When People Could Fly (2014) was acquired by the New Orleans Museum of Art. The White Buffalo Calf Woman (2017) suit is a part of the permanent exhibit at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac\, in Paris\, France. The Metamorphosis (2013) was featured in Tina Freeman’s award-winning book\, Artist Spaces:NEW Orleans (Louisiana Artists).

The first presentation of its kind\, New African Masquerades offers a rare look into contemporary West African masquerade by contextualizing the works of individual artists within a range of social\, economic\, and religious practices and examining their networks of viewership and exchange. \nLearn More \nAbout Kumasi\nKumasi is New Orleans’ own full Afrobeat orchestra. We fell in love with a style of music created over 50 years ago by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen\, and we bring it to the people of New Orleans with live shows\, as well as three recorded albums. You can expect lots of Fela Kuti tunes and some Afrofunk from ’70s Ghana and Benin in our live shows\, and we play and record our original music inspired by those styles. Mejri examines what happens in the painting and through the painting\, where indifference bids farewell\, and affect becomes activated; it strikes back with force. \nHe has exhibited widely\, including the 13th Cairo Biennial\, Cairo\, Egypt / Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art\, Dakar\, Senegal / The New Orleans Museum of Art\, New Orleans\, USA / The Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon\, France / N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art\, Detroit\, USA / New York International Independent Film and Video Festival\, New York\, USA / Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) L.I.\, New York\, USA. SUMMARY:Book Club: Rolland Golden: Life\, Love\, and Art in the French Quarter
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions.  \nIt is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nRegister Now \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nRolland Golden: Life\, Love\, and Art in the French Quarter\nby Rolland Golden\n\n\nIn the early twentieth century\, the French Quarter had become home to a vibrant community of working artists attracted to the atmosphere\, architecture\, and colorful individuals who populated the scene (and who also became some of its first preservationists). Louisiana native Rolland Golden was one of these artists to live\, work\, and raise a family in this most storied corner of New Orleans. With 94 black-and-white and 54 color photographs and illustrations\, his memoir of that life focuses on the period of 1955 to 1976. Golden\, a painter\, discusses the particular challenges of making a living from art\, and his story becomes a family affair involving his daughters and his beloved wife\, Stella. \nGolden’s studio sat in a patio on Royal Street\, around the corner from Preservation Hall where old-time musicians played Dixieland Jazz. Golden sketched and painted many of them in a visual style that encompassed realism and gradually developed into abstract realism. Golden recalls work that he did in historic preservation\, sketching architecture for publications such as the Vieux Carré Courier\, and he discusses his studies with renowned regionalist painter John McCrady. The artist frankly discusses his experiences with the display\, representation\, and sale of his work\, presenting a little-explored and yet crucial part of a working artist’s life. The memoir concludes with Golden and his wife traveling to the premiere of his exhibition in Moscow\, having been selected by a Russian envoy as the only American artist to have a one-man touring exhibition in the former Soviet Union. Among the nearly 150 black-and-white and color illustrations are never-before-seen photos and sketches by the artist.

DESCRIPTION:NOMA and the Congo Square Preservation Society present the Elders Sacred Talk Series with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while providing the opportunity for visitors to learn firsthand about the impact they’ve had on our city. This conversation between Chief Howard Miller and Kamau Wesley Phillips will be moderated by Malik Bartholemew.\n\nThis program is included with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative.\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\nChief Howard Miller is chief of the Creole Wild West which is the oldest Mardi Gras Indian tribe in New Orleans whose origins date back to the late 1700s. Chief Miller has been masking as a Mardi Gras Indian since 1969 and first became Chief of the tribe in 1976. He currently serves as president of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council which was formed in 1983 in order to unify tribes across the city and to support the culture. As a culture bearer of this sacred tradition\, Chief Miller is the leader of The Creole Wild West Youth Program teaching children the art of sewing\, chanting\, dancing\, suit preparation and the meaning of the culture in general. Chief Miller has spoken as a guest lecturer at universities around the nation\, some of which include New York University\, Georgetown\, Harvard\, Ohio State University\, Louisiana State University\, Xavier University and Tulane University as well as numerous public schools and organizations locally in New Orleans. With over his 47 years of involvement in the culture\, Chief Miller has grown into a masterful Storyteller and true historian of Mardi Gras Indian tradition.\n\n\nKamau Wesley Phillips is New Orleans born and raised. He began playing drums with the Desire Poets after hearing the Last Poets records during the Black Panther movement in the Ninth Ward. Kamau has studied and performed with Kidd Jordan\, Sun Ra\, Energy Funk Band\, Desire Community Choir\, Casa Samba\, African Dance Groups; Free Spirit\, Culu\, Nkafu\, and Sacred Dance Ministry\, and Fiyiyi and the Mandingo Warriors. Kamau is a poet\, author\, drum maker\, teacher\, and designer with 50 years as The Ultimate Sideman. In 2013\, he wrote and produced The Spirit of the Drum in Senegal\, West Africa. In 2017\, this production marked his Jazz Fest debut as a band leader.\n\n \n\n\nAbout Elders Sacred Talks and Art Thrives\nNOMA’s Art Thrives initiative presents creative aging programs designed to support visitors ages 55 and up. In addition to art-making workshops\, courses\, and opportunities for hands-on art-making\, the Elders Sacred Talk Series provides a platform for older adults in New Orleans to share their experiences with audiences of all ages. \nThe Elders Sacred Talk Series is presented in partnership between NOMA and the Congo Square Preservation Society. His visual work delves into sacred and natural themes\, rendered through shadowy\, atmospheric\, and whimsical compositions on copper\, linen\, and porcelain.  \nAs a leading performer and researcher of the salterio—a historical dulcimer popular in 17th- and 18th-century Spain\, Italy\, and colonial Latin America—Armitano Domingo focuses on reconstructing both the repertoire and authentic playing techniques. He performs on a replica 18th-century salterio\, using special finger rings to pluck the strings rather than hammers. \nAcross media\, his work engages with history and memory whether through nostalgic\, tenebrous landscapes\, delicate porcelain forms\, or the vibrant\, resonant sound of the salterio. His practice confronts the cultural amnesia that allows once-important traditions to fade\, reclaiming forgotten forms and questioning why they were so readily lost to history.

Life is hell for all the slaves\, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans\, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar\, a recent arrival from Virginia\, tells her about the Underground Railroad\, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned—Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to find a station and head north\, they are being hunted. \nIn Whitehead’s ingenious conception\, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor—engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar’s first stop is South Carolina\, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But the city’s placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway\, the relentless slave catcher\, is close on their heels. Through the interweaving of three photographic series—”Stony the Road “(2023)\, “In This Here Place” (2019)\, and “Night Coming Tenderly\, Black” (2017)—Bey offers a framework through which to conceptualize the landscapes of Virginia\, Louisiana\, and Ohio (respectively) not merely as historical sites of struggle\, but also as places of perseverance and fortitude.
