DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copies\, and selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. How is a Chinese dragon robe a diagram of the whole universe? What is the difference between how the Greek Fates and the Viking Norns used threads to tell our destiny? \nIn Fabric\, bestselling author Victoria Finlay spins us round the globe\, weaving stories of our relationship with cloth and asking how and why people through the ages have made it\, worn it\, invented it\, and made symbols out of it. These artists show a mastery of both traditional and unconventional materials\, with rings ranging from gold\, diamond\, and pearls to found sunglass lenses and goat hair. He has studied the rhythmic connections between Africa\, the Caribbean\, and the Americas for more than three decades\, making him a leader in the field of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz percussion. Summers performed with Herbie Hancock and worked with Quincy Jones on scores for Roots\, The Wiz\, and The Color Purple. His performance groups included Bill Summers & Summers Heat\, which produced seven albums; Los Hombres Calientes\, which produced six albums; and the Headhunters\, which released nine albums. \nOver the years\, Summers recorded and/or toured with numerous artists including Tupac Shakur\, Janet Jackson\, Anita Baker\, Carlos Santana\, Young Jeezy\, Keyshia Cole\, Miles Davis\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Malik Yoba\, Kenny Loggins\, Arsenio Hall\, Nina Simone\, Dianne Reeves\, Prince\, Michael Jackson\, Sting\, Stevie Wonder\, Sarah Vaughn\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Jay-Z\, Kanye West\, Kool & The Gang\, Teddy Pendergrass\, Barry White\, The Gap Band\, Jill Scott\, and Earth Wind and Fire. \nBill Summers—Baba Eshubi—is an initiated Priest of Orisha Esu Elegba. \nNana Anoa Nantambu\nNana Anoa Nantambu\, daughter of Roy and Mary Booker Cains\, is a perpetual educator and student. After attending McDonogh #35 High School\, she earned a BS in Mathematics from UNO and a PhD in Education (Research Methods and Statistics) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has taught in universities\, community colleges\, training programs\, and her community-based mathematics learning center\, Neighborhood Math Place. She also lectured at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State\, Nigeria\, for four years. As an independent consultant\, she provided program evaluations and community assessments for local nonprofit organizations for nearly 18 years. Nana is an initiated Priestess of Yemaya and was crowned in Cuba. \nHer present work\, her life’s calling\, evolved through Wholely Living Simply Living\, a not-for-profit organization that she started in Durham\, North Carolina\, while displaced after Hurricane Katrina. SUMMARY:Art Thrives Color Theory Workshop (Ages 55 and up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. \nThe power of color in a painting cannot be underestimated. Be it subdued\, bright\, or absent\, it is a key component of any artwork. Along with the ability to mix colors together\, understanding color theory allows one to not only create unity\, but also to convey emotion in a painting. \nColor can be intimidating for beginning painters\, and color theory is a body of principles that provide guidance on the relationship between colors and the physiological impacts of certain color combinations. As an artist\, one does not necessarily need to be concerned with the complex underlying principles of color theory\, but you should understand general applications of color theory and color relationships. \nIn this workshop\, we will use the basic concepts of color theory to learn about how we perceive color. We will explore the qualities of color and how light affects color within a painting. Space is limited so register today to reserve your spot. \nAbout Lynda Benglis’s Wave of the World\nLynda Benglis\, born in Louisiana\, is an American sculptor and visual artist known especially for her wax paintings and poured latex sculptures. Following the 1984 New Orleans World’s Fair\, her Wave of the World sculpture sat hidden for decades in a former sewage treatment plant in the City of Kenner outside of New Orleans. The Wave suffered years of neglect that led to surface damage and the loss of a large section of the base. \nWith the permission of Kenner\, which owns the sculpture\, and the funding of The Helis Foundation\, Benglis personally undertook and supervised the complete restoration of the work in the summer of 2014. The piece was returned to the Modern Art Foundry in New York where Benglis originally created and cast the work. \nBenglis worked with 1983-84 team member\, Bob Spring\, and his son\, Jeffrey\, present director of Modern Art Foundry\, to pour a new base\, restore the original patina\, and repair the internal plumbing of the fountain. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion\, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily\, befriending fashion’s most important designers (Halston\, Yves Saint Laurent\, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends\, he also made enemies. Doors open at 5 pm. \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \nTo book your ticket in advance\, click the link above. \n\nAbout the Speakers\n\nRonnie Moore\nRonnie Moore is a veteran civil rights activist\, community developer\, and photographer. At the age of 15\, he and his peers attempted to integrate a public park in his hometown of New Orleans. In 1961\, while a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, he led a group of 2\,500 students to the state capitol to protest the city's hiring policies and segregated lunch counters. That activism led to his arrest and expulsion from the university and prompted his full-time commitment to CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality). Moore worked as a field secretary for CORE from 1961 to 1965\, which included establishing voter registration initiatives in parts of Louisiana. From 1965 – 1973\, he worked as the executive director of the Scholarship\, Education and Defense Fund for Racial Equality\, Inc. Moore also served as the director of the Institute for Resident Initiatives at Tulane University from 1996 to 2005 and the director of the African American Youth Congress from 1982 to 1994. During his lifetime of activism\, Moore was arrested over 17 times and held in solitary confinement for 56 days for advocating for voting rights in Louisiana. \n\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons joined New Orleans chapter of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) in 1961 when she was 14 or 15 years old. It was one of the most active chapters in the region and she became a very active member participating in sit-ins and picketing. Her participation resulted in police arresting her several times. Her dedication led her to become a Freedom Rider and test the law that made segregation on public buses unconstitutional. She and other members of the New Orleans CORE rode a bus from New Orleans to McComb\, MS where they were met with severe violence and some of them suffered life-threatening injuries. “After the rides\, Smith-Simmons trained freedom riders and taught members how to participate in nonviolent protests. In the ‘60s\, she also worked to integrate hotels and Florida beaches and participated in the March on Washington. \n\nAbout Congo Square Preservation Society\nThe Congo Square Preservation Society serves as a continuing catalyst in the resurrection and continuation of activities\, advocacy\, and preservation of historic and sacred Congo Square in New Orleans.
