Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. \nFan Zhang\, professor of practice at the Asian Art Institute at Tulane University\, will discuss the exhibition Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society. \nFan Zhang specializes in the art and material culture of early medieval China (3rd–6th century CE) and the cultural interactions among East Asia\, Central Asia\, and Northeastern Asia through and beyond the Silk Road network. Adopting an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach\, her research probes into issues around identity\, migration\, and hybridity in the ancient world. Her current book project\, Cultural Encounters: Ethnic Complexity and Material Expressions in the Fifth-century Pingcheng\, draws attention to the funerary art of Pingcheng\, the capital city of the Northern Wei Dynasty\, and explores how artworks function as effective vehicles for individuals to articulate one’s identities in a multi-ethnic society. Fan Zhang has conducted archaeological fieldwork in both China and Central Asia. She also participated in research and curatorial programs in several museums\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the National Museum of Korea\, and the Sichuan Museum.

Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society\, artists influenced by Asian aesthetics will offer their perspective on the objects on view. \nRose Bratcher is an ensō painter and a monk at the New Orleans Zen Temple. In Zen\, ensō is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment\, strength\, elegance\, the universe\, and mu (the void). It is characterised by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics.

Which one is your favorite of the five? Do you realize how you maneuver through the environment using your senses? If you could not see\, how would you describe beauty? If you could not hear\, how would you know the truth? This workshop allows you space to ponder over the privilege you have in creating your own identity. \nWhat you’ll need: Paper and things to write or draw with (pen or pencil or other artistic tools). \n  \n \nAbout the Teaching Artist \nChristian “Cubs the Poet” Davenport was born in Baton Rouge\, LA and raised in the DMV (District of Columbia\, Maryland\, Virginia). Growing up\, he attended Catholic schools\, yet each school was predominantly of one race. He believes he witnessed the effects of institutional education on all identifying races and classes in America. Wanting to develop and understand his own way of thinking\, Cubs left college to start typing custom poems in the French Quarter\, where he honed his poetic skills and expanded his vocabulary with regards to communicating with tourists and natives. He believes freedom is not the experience\, but the expression of the experience. The inaugural Poet Laureate of Baton Rouge\, Cubs is currently working on self publishing his first book of poems and art\, What I Did with my Free Time. Cubs the Poet is also a visual artist\, whose latest exhibition\, “Say It: I Love Black People\,” delved into the lack of intimacy and vulnerability between races\, in addition to the lack of development of self love. \nThe workshop is projected to run 90 minutes on Zoom. Given the number of attendees and the social distancing guidelines issued by the City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana due to the COVID- 19 pandemic\, the New Orleans Museum of Art’s leadership along with presenting sponsor\, Hancock Whitney\, agreed that canceling the event would be in the best interest of public health safety. \nThe well-being and safety of staff\, volunteers\, sponsors\, guests\, and donors are NOMA’s and Hancock Whitney’s highest priorities. \nFor fifteen years\, LOVE in the Garden\, which takes place in the iconic Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, celebrates the visual and culinary artists of New Orleans with a festive evening offering the best of New Orleans cuisine\, spirits\, and entertainment. A cash-only bar will sell beverages on-site. \nVIEW THE MENU AND MAKE AN ORDER \nAbout Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes\nBruce Sunpie Barnes is a veteran New Orleans musician\, former National Park Service ranger for 30 years\, actor\, photographer\, book author\, former high school biology teacher\, former college football All-American\, and former NFL player (Kansas City Chiefs). Sunpie Barnes’s many careers have taken him far and wide. He has traveled to over 50 countries playing his own style of what he calls Afro-Louisiana music incorporating Blues\, Zydeco\, Gospel\, Caribbean and African influenced rhythms and melodies. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, master accordion and harmonica player\, also piano\, rubboard\, talking drum\, and dejembe. He learned accordion from some of the best Zydeco pioneers in Louisiana including Fernest Arceneaux\, John Delafose\, and Clayton Sampy. Along with his musical group Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots\, he has performed at festivals and concerts across the US and around the globe. Sunpie has recorded 6 critically acclaimed CDs with his compositions currently featured in 16 Hollywood film productions. \nIn addition to this musical work Sunpie is also a member of the Paul Simon band and finished a 58 city arena tour “Paul Simon and Sting Together” which spanned 34 countries (2014-2015). He is deeply involved in New Orleans parade culture and co-authored the 2015 critically acclaimed book Talk That Music Talk passing on brass band music in New Orleans the traditional way. More than 300 of Sunpie’s photographs are featured in this book. \nSunpie is the Big Chief of the North Side Skull and Bone Gang\, one of the oldest existing Black Carnival groups in New Orleans. Sunpie is also an active member of the second line parading organization Black Men of Labor Social Aid and Pleasure Club. \nSafety Guidelines\nNOMA is committed to the health and safety of our community. We require that all registrants to this event wear face masks as per CDC\, state\, and city guidelines. All staff and participants will be wearing face masks\, with the exception of the on-stage musicians. There will be a minimum of 10 ft from the edge of the stage to the beginning of seating. \nPer city guidelines\, capacity will be limited to 50 people. \nNo social gathering will be permitted. SUMMARY:Helen Gillet in Virtual Concert for Mending the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archaeologist who explores synthesized sounds\, textures\, and rhythms using an acoustic cello. For Mending the Sky\, Gillet will weave together a soundscape using cello\, drum machine\, sounds in nature\, loop pedal\, poetry and storytelling. Across a series of three solo performances\, Gillet will explore the vibrations of sonic disturbance: the tipping points where swollen rivers of human tension and natural imbalances flood the banks of an unsustainable society. He has played with various ensembles at jazz festivals and clubs in Australia\, Barbados\, Bermuda\, Brazil\, Canada\, England\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Hungary\, India\, Italy\, New Zealand\, the Netherlands\, Norway\, Russia\, South Africa\, Spain\, Switzerland\, and Wales. Ashlin leads the Trumpet Mafia and plays regularly with ensembles in New Orleans\, such as the Ellis Marsalis Quintet\, The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, and Bill Summers and Jazalsa. He has played with musicians such as Ellis Marsalis\, Jason Marsalis\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Herlin Riley\, Roland Guerin\, Leroy Jones\, Derek Douget\, Adonis Rose\, Dr. John\, Karl Denson\, Igor Butman\, and Nicholas Payton\, as well as vocalists Rafael Saadiq\, the O’Jays\, Anthony Hamilton\, PJ Morton\, Aretha Franklin\, Quiana Lynell\, Tiffany Austin\, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Join us as together we intentionally and collectively inhale and exhale to ground ourselves\, be mindful of where we’ve been and where we go\, journal\, move and affirm our intentions. This class will be led by Freedom At The Mat creator Olivia F. Scott\, with musical accompaniment by musician Steve Lands. \nAbout Freedom at the Mat\nFreedom At The Mat is a multi-disciplined wellness class experience integrating mindfulness\, meditation\, yoga asana\, journaling and verbal affirmations.
