Collaborators include the Jamal Batiste Band\, Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley\, Empress Iyahdae\, Jesse Armerding\, and Lakeba Angelle. \nJones’s artistic\, creative\, and cultural work is centered at the heart of healing\, empowerment\, and forgiveness. She likes to call her music “New Orleans Swag” because it is influenced by and mixes in the traditional rhythms of the Second Line\, R&B\, hip-hop\, and folk. Jones’s music also celebrates legendary artists and their traditions\, like Deacon John and Allen Toussaint\, who through their musicality and songwriting made available New Orleans’ soulful and spirit-filled culture\, the bayou landscape\, and its colorful heritage to people around the world. Jones’s music is a good bowl of gumbo\, mixing in all these traditions to produce songs that honor love\, well-being\, ancestry\, family\, tradition\, and good times. \n  \n \nSets from DJ Chinua\n6:00–7:15 and 8:30–10:00 pm in the Coleman Courtyard\nDJ Chinua is a New Orleans–based DJ and event curator interested in facilitating community and connection through live events and global sounds. His projects include a two-year collaboration with Solange Knowles as resident DJ for Saint Heron’s Proclamation dance party series as well as ongoing collaborations with Arcade Fire for their Krewe du Kanaval celebrations and DOPEciety for Couches. He is also the founder and co-sound selector for Ascendance\, a monthly zodiac-themed dance party. \n  \n \nStill Life with Alan Grimes\n6:15–7:15 pm in the Coleman Courtyard\nAlan Grimes’s still life sessions started five years ago at Gallery 992 in Atlanta for the vanguard of artists and photographers. Combining academic figure drawing and set design with a community collection of work\, the program has evolved into a diverse artistic/photographic think tank that flushes out amazing conceptual pieces in a live setting with 15- to 20-minute poses by models. \nFor this event\, materials will be provided to produce your own drawings. \n  \n \nPerformance by Jesse Armerding\n7:15 pm in the Coleman Courtyard\nJesse Armerding is a drummer originally from New England. He enjoys mixing drumming with other mediums\, such as playing for dancers\, creating characters\, and foraging found-object percussion. They have performed in nearly every corner of North America\, as well as in the Caribbean\, South Africa\, Morocco\, Japan\, Ireland\, Scotland\, France\, and England. The band writes\, records\, and performs on the Jam-All Pro. Music Group independent record label. \n  \n \nAbout Empress Iyahdae\nEmpress Iyahdae is a creator and artist\, who has traveled through many mediums including tattooing\, jewelry\, graphite portraiture\, and ceramics. Photography\, however\, is their love and allows their heart to fly free. For Iyahdae\, every picture is as unique as the individual behind the camera\, and their work understands the power of perspective and how art can be used to inspire and invoke feelings of healing\, peace\, awareness\, and truth. Iyahdae uses photography intentionally to help others see the value in themselves. \n  \n \nAbout Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley\nBorn by the Red River waters of Central Louisiana and the only child of her parents to survive outside the womb\, Sha’Condria “iCon” Sibley is an intentional\, evolving\, faith-spirited\, multi-inspired artist based in New Orleans. Working in many mediums\, her work spans across page\, stage\, canvas\, theater\, music\, talk radio\, and short film. Sha’Condria earned her Bachelor of Science in biology from Xavier University of Louisiana and further studied community health sciences with a focus in maternal and child health at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She is a multiple-time national poetry slam champion and viral spoken word artist who shares her work nationally and internationally\, appearing in the third season of TV One’s Verses and Flow\, as well as on British television and BBC World Radio. She uses her words and work in collaboration with community-based organizations\, schools\, universities\, and detention centers. She also brings her gifts to stages at major music festivals\, on music projects alongside Grammy Award-winning artists and an orchestra\, in art museums\, at film festivals\, in anthologies and documentaries\, as well as on many notable platforms including For Harriet\, Huffington Post\, and Teen Vogue. During these casual conversations\, we’ll take a close look at different works currently on view at NOMA. \nThe fleur-de-lis is undoubtedly one of New Orleans’s most prominent symbols\, and today it can be found on everything from football helmets to gates and garbage cans. Beyond the New Orleans Saints and even the French monarchy\, the fleur-de-lis has even deeper roots that stretch to the continent of Africa. In his book Fleur Of The Nile: Remaking The Fleur-De-Lis\, Casey Delmont traces the origins of the fleur-de-lis and illuminates its relationship to the ancient Egyptian lotus. During this special Wednesday gallery talk in the museum’s Lapis Center for the Arts\, Delmont will be in conversation with NOMA’s Community Engagement Curator Nic Brierre Aziz regarding the book\, the history of this popular symbol\, and the layers of complexity that the fleur-de-lis still holds. \nFree with museum admission. His early creative involvement with the fleur-de-lis and his interest in symmetry analysis of the symbol led him to pen an engaging story based on substantiative evidence presupposing the Egyptian origins of the fleur-de-lis. His book Fleur of the Nile claims that the fleur-de-lis is an ancient iteration of an archetypical double-flower motif which emanated from prehistoric human ornamentation that began in Africa as far back in time as 35\,000 BCE. Casey has produced over 8 books through Roux Publishing and has written or contributed to two other books including La Fleur De Lis: Histories\, Mysteries\, Recipes and Mixologies of the World’s Oldest Symbol. He is a native and resident of Louisiana and has been recognized as a creative force in the Capital City helping to bring new life to the rich cultural heritage of Louisiana and the Greater South. Her works comprise an array of media from performance and installation to the glittering table laid for thirty-nine iconic women in The Dinner Party (now permanently housed at the Brooklyn Museum)\, the groundbreaking Birth Project\, and the meticulously researched Holocaust Project. She designed the monumental installation for Dior’s 2020 Paris couture show and\, in 2019\, established the Judy Chicago Portal\, which will help to accomplish her lifelong goal of overcoming the erasure that has eclipsed the achievements of so many women. \nThe Flowering is her vivid and revealing autobiography\, fully illustrated with photographs of her work\, as well as personal images and a foreword by Gloria Steinem. SUMMARY:Funerary Traditions in Ancient Egypt and New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:One of the most notable characteristics of Ancient Egyptian culture is preparation for the afterlife. Rituals around funerals and burials have long been of popular interest\, and many of these traditions can be seen in contemporary African-American culture. Rhodes Funeral Home currently operates as the oldest African-American-owned business in New Orleans and the genesis of its creation is rooted in many of the same intentions that those within Ancient Egypt had within their burial traditions. \nFor this conversation\, Community Engagement Curator Nic Brierre Aziz is in dialogue with Stephanie Rhodes Navarre and Joan Rhodes\, two of the four managers of the Rhodes Funeral Home\, to explore the history of their family’s business\, the traditions that go into their burials and the ways in which their work relates to the African-based funerary practices of Ancient Egypt. \nRegister Now \nThis program is free to the public. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a free educational screening of The Rainbow Prince. Co-created by Marea Claybourne-Napier and her mother—filmmaker Laura Napier—the short film is a modern-day children’s story that presents a new take on traditional fairytales. The film introduces K–6 audiences to new models of power and heroism. \nScreenings take place at 11 am and 1 pm in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts. Renowned historian Glenn Adamson turns that narrative on its head in this innovative account\, revealing makers’ central role in shaping America’s identity. Examine any phase of the nation’s struggle to define itself\, and artisans are there-from the silversmith Paul Revere and the revolutionary carpenters and blacksmiths who hurled tea into Boston Harbor\, to today’s “maker movement.” \nAdamson shows that craft has long been implicated in debates around equality\, education\, and class. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. As artistic director of Rencontre Orient-Occident at Chateau Mercier in Sierre\, Switzerland\, Chouki has brought together a wide range of international musicians to envision new forms of dialogue between East and West\, with music often the only common language between performers. \n  \n \nAbout Francis Scully\nFrancis Scully is the founder and music director of New Orleans-based chamber orchestra New Resonance Orchestra. The ensemble collaborates with theater\, dance\, literary\, and visual artists to create interdisciplinary performances which relate the emotions of classical music directly to the lives of the audience. Praised by the Times-Picayune as a “forward-looking chamber orchestra\,” this award-winning ensemble invigorates the classical music community in New Orleans and demonstrates the relevance of classical music in today’s world. \nScully also shares his passion for music in a variety of educational roles. He has conducted the Louisiana Philharmonic on numerous occasions\, included their Band Together educational series. As Assistant Professor of Music at University of Holy Cross\, Scully inspires new listeners in courses on music appreciation\, twentieth-century music\, and the history of Rock. \nHe holds an M.M. in Conducting from Peabody Conservatory where he studied with Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar. \n  \n \nAbout Hannah Yim\nHannah Yim is the Assistant Concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra\, which she joined in 2007\, Instructor of Violin at Tulane University\, and founder/arranger/violinist with the Radio Bird Quartet and Harlequin Chamber Music. \nShe has over 250 original rock and pop quartet cover arrangements with the Radio Bird Quartet and Harlequin Chamber Music. She views this as her most enjoyable and important musical work to date. Her work with Radio Bird Quartet have led to collaborations and shows with Kristin Diable\, Maggie Koerner\, Michael Mantese\, and Mahmoud Chouki\, amongst others. \nHannah has been a featured soloist and chamber musician with the Louisiana Philharmonic\, as well as a chamber musician in the Trinity Artist Series\, Bach Around the Clock\, and the Marigny Opera House. Past chamber collaborations have included Edgar Meyer\, Bela Fleck\, Pablo Ziegler\, and Anat Cohen. She has performed at Jazz Fest\, Voodoo Fest\, and the French Quarter Festival. In 2010 and 2012\, she shared the New Orleans Tribute to the Classical Arts Award for Best Chamber Music Performance. \nOther symphonic engagements have included the Pacific Symphony\, Louisville Orchestra\, Colorado Symphony\, New World Symphony\, Colorado Symphony\, and the Lakes Area\, Mendocino\, Colorado\, and Breckenridge Music Festivals. Carrier is a third-generation Zydeco artist\, who played his first gig on the drums with his daddy’s band at the age of ten years old. At fourteen years old he played his first gig on the accordion. In 1987 he joined the Terrance Simien Zydeco band and toured all over the world\, including Europe and North Africa. In 1989 \, Chubby decided to start his on band\, which performs 275 days a year at festivals\, fairs\, private parties and music venues all over the world. In 2010\, Chubby won a Grammy or Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album for Zydeco Junkie\, and in 2011\, he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. \n  \n \nThe Encroaching Sea: Excerpts from RISE for Mother Earth by Mélange Dance Company\n7:00–7:30 pm in the Great Hall\nIn collaboration with Louisiana Sea Grant’s Grand Isle Diaries\, Mélange Dance Company presents excerpts from their performance RISE for Mother Earth. SUMMARY:Steve Lands: Rearranging the Planets
DESCRIPTION:Creative Assembly Cohort member Steve Lands presents Rearranging the Planets\, a musical performance reinterpreting composer Gustav Holst’s influential orchestral suite The Planets. \nWith his original composition\, which premiered at NOMA in February\, Lands uses Holst’s work as a jumping off point to explore the varied relationships civilizations have had to the heavens over time. While Holst structured his suite—which premiered at the Queen’s Hall in London in 1918—around the Solar System and its Greco-Roman mythological namesakes\, Rearranging the Planets casts a broader net to consider how societies around the world have looked to the stars. In the words of planetary scientist Carl Sagan\, “We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.” \nFeaturing Shea Pierre; Alfred Jordan\, Jr.; Xavier Molina; Max Moran; John Maestas; Amari Ansari; Rex Gregory; and Amber Matthews. With additional credits to Francis Wong\, Camille Lenain\, Meghan Stewart\, and Amina Scott. \nPerformances take place in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts on Friday\, September 9\, and Saturday\, September 10\, at 8 pm. \nTickets are $30 | $25 for members \nBuy Tickets \n  \n\n\nPerformance Credits and Performer Bios\n\n\n\n\nSteve Lands\nHailing from the city of Baton Rouge\, Louisiana\, Steve Lands has been swaying stages\, clubs\, bars\, museums\, houses-of-worship\, and studios the world over for more than a decade now. He’s got the kind of skill that can only be gained from working with great artists from all walks of life. His experience ranges from shows with R&B/gospel Grammy winner PJ Morton; doing festivals with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band; and tours through Europe with Swiss pianist and composer Florian Favre to studio sessions with the Black Keys; jamming in DC with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters; playing in big bands with Ellis\, Jason\, Branford\, and Delfeayo Marsalis; and doing a tribute to David Bowie with Arcade Fire. Courage and care are his motivations for music and he’s got more than enough of both to give you a sonic fantasy.\n\n\n\n\nShea Pierre\nA native of New Orleans\, Louisiana\, Shea Pierre started his musical journey at the age of 4. He joined his family’s gospel group\, the Williams Sisters\, and began playing for various churches in the New Orleans area. He later attended the prestigious New Orleans Center of Creative Arts\, where he studied with Michael Pellera\, Chris Severin\, Ellis Marsalis\, and Jason Marsalis. While in high school\, he toured parts of South Africa with the Batiste Brothers Band from New Orleans. Shea is a 2014 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music\, where he studied jazz piano with Dan Wall. He continues to travel and engage in different projects throughout the Midwest.\n\n\n\n\nAlfred Jordan Jr.\nBorn in New Orleans in 1993\, Alfred Jordan Jr.’s parents noticed the gift that was on their son. Growing up in church\, gospel music played a huge part in molding him as a drummer. Alfred’s skill sprouted\, awarding him a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music graduating with a B.A. Alfred’s love for music turned into his profession\, landing his gig as the current drummer for Big Sam’s Funky Nation and has also been fortunate to work with Donald Harrison\, Christian Scott\, Nicholas Payton\, Kent Jordan as well as his collective projects NwaSoul Project and Bignatiouss. Alfred is forever grateful knowing this is “for the love of music.”\n\n\n\n\nXavier Molina\nWe have watched Xavier Molina grow as an artist since 2006 when he first picked up the trumpet. Xavier has blossomed into a singer/songwriter\, drummer and trumpeter with a heart dedicated to making great music. Xavier has played with several independent bands in the New Orleans\, Atlanta and Alabama areas\, and never ceases to amaze the audiences anywhere.\n\n\n\n\nMax Moran\nMax Moran is a Louisiana born musician and composer who has become a first-call bassist across several genres in New Orleans’ thriving music scene. Known for his versatility on electric bass\, upright bass\, and synthesizer\, Moran provides a solid\, soulful foundation to a number of classic and progressive bands. Performing since the age of thirteen\, Max Moran spent over ten years as the bassist of jazz master Donald Harrison and has also shared the stage with artists such as Davell Crawford\, Leo Nocentelli (The Meters)\, Bernie Worrell (Parliament/ Funkadelic)\, and Grammy nominees Christian Scott and Jamison Ross.\n\n\n\n\nJohn Maestas\nGuitarist John Maestas was born in Albuquerque\, New Mexico and is now based in New Orleans. He started his career first as a sideman to many inspiring contemporary young artists performing original music\, while also accompanying and learning from New Orleans legacy artists who keep the traditions of their city’s music alive and thriving. He has become known as a versatile music producer working in studios writing\, recording & performing songs for world-class artists including Christian Scott\, Nicholas Payton\, Jamison Ross\, Wendell Brunious\, MonoNeon\, John “Papa” Gros\, Elzhi\, Nesby Phips\, Fiend and many others. In 2016 he co founded the independent record label Bubble Bath Records with 3 other friends that helps to educate\, elevate & empower over twenty young artists who need support in navigating the music industry. “The Dream Catcher”\, the debut album from Maestas’ alt-rock band Juan Tigre\, is music inspired by the iconic high desert imagery of New Mexico and imbued with the expansive folklore of the Southwest.\n\n\n\n\nAmari Ansari\nAmari Ansari brings a fresh voice to the saxophone. The son of a gospel pianist\, the Alabama native credits his earliest interest in music to southern gospel and the late Alabama jazz educator Dr. Frank Adams Sr. Upon moving to New Orleans in 2009\, he was the recipient of the University of New Orleans’ Ellis Marsalis Jazz Scholarship where he would go on to graduate with a Master’s Degree in Music. This introduction to the Marsalis family led him to meet NEA Jazz Master Delfeayo Marsalis\, eventually becoming a long time member of the Marsalis led band the Uptown Jazz Orchestra. With his feature on Marsalis’ 2019 release\, Jazz Party \, Downbeat Magazine called Amari’s style\, “Hank Crawford meets Maceo Parker.”\n\n\n\n\nFrancis Wong\nFrancis Wong grew up in the New Orleans area and escaped into art from a young age. He attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and attended the University of New Orleans studying fine art and film. Hurricane Katrina interrupted his college education but educated him on so much more in life. His work is influenced by the magical realness of life in New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana. Through mixed media paintings\, music and video\,he uses art to help heal ancestral trauma and PTSD. His work is a unique hybrid of his Chinese heritage and his Southern and American upbringing.  Francis has Exhibited all over Louisiana\, NYC\, and Oakland\, California.\n\n\n\n\nCamille Lenain\nCamille Farrah Lenain is a French-Algerian documentary and portrait photographer who grew up in Paris\, studied Photography at l’ESA in Brussels and at ICP in New York City (virtual). She relocated to New Orleans in 2013\, where she teaches photography at Tulane University and works on long-term projects with a focus on empathetic portraiture\, exploring the notions of representation\, collective memory and plural identities. Her clients include : Rolling Stone\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post Magazine\, T Magazine\, The Bitter Southerner and Libération. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally\, including at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, Festival In Cadaques\, Les Boutographies\, PhotoVogue Festival. She was previously an Artist in Residence at the Joan Mitchell Center and Nunu’s Arts Collective.\n\n\n\n\nMeghan Stewart\nMeghan Stewart is a musician\, designer\, and instructor currently residing in New Orleans\, LA. She designs exclusively for musicians\, understanding the connection between visuals and sounds. She’s designed for musicians such as Steve Lands\, multi instrumentalist Mahmoud Chouki\, singer and Berklee resident Cindy Scott\, and others.\n\n\n\n\nAmina Scott\nAmina Scott\, born and raised in Oakland\, CA\, is an upright and electric bassist\, composer\, and arranger. Her interest in music began at an early age when her grandmother began giving her piano lessons. From then\, her love and passion for music has yet to cease\, playing electric bass at the age of twelve and was soon playing gigs with local bands in Oakland. In 2017\, Amina joined the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra led by Adonis Rose. Now based in New Orleans\, Amina leads her own band and she has performed with various artists including Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Steve Turre\, Wessell “Warm Daddy” Anderson\, Nicholas Payton\, David Murray\, Jamison Ross\, Joanne Brackeen\, Herlin Riley\, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah\, and more.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Creative Assembly\nCreative Assembly is a community engagement initiative by the New Orleans Museum of Art that uses neighborhood-based participatory art experiences as a vehicle for personal exploration\, community collaboration\, and social change. \nLearn more \nNOMA’s Creative Assembly community engagement initiative is supported by the Wagner Foundation.
