SUMMARY:Book Club Curatorial Program with Curator Lisa Rotondo-McCord
DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copies\, and selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor more information on the NOMA Book Club\, please contact NOMA’s Curator of Education\, Tracy Kennan\, at tkennan@noma.org or 504.658.4113. \nRegister Now \n\nAugust 2023\nCuratorial Program | Friday\, August 11\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows: A Memoir by Ai Weiwei\nCrown\, 2021\, ISBN-13: 978-0553419467 \nOnce a close associate of Mao Zedong and the nation’s most celebrated poet\, Ai Weiwei’s father\, Ai Qing\, was branded a rightist during the Cultural Revolution\, and he and his family were banished to a desolate place known as “Little Siberia\,” where Ai Qing was sentenced to hard labor cleaning public toilets. Ai Weiwei recounts his childhood in exile\, and his difficult decision to leave his family to study art in America\, where he befriended Allen Ginsberg and was inspired by Andy Warhol and the artworks of Marcel Duchamp. With candor and wit\, he details his return to China and his rise from artistic unknown to art world superstar and international human rights activist—and how his work has been shaped by living under a totalitarian regime. \nHere\, for the first time\, Ai Weiwei explores the origins of his exceptional creativity and passionate political beliefs through his life story and that of his father\, whose creativity was stifled. At once ambitious and intimate\, Ai Weiwei’s 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows offers a deep understanding of the myriad forces that have shaped modern China\, and serves as a timely reminder of the urgent need to protect freedom of expression \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Watercolor Plein-air Painting Workshop (Ages 55 and Up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. Join us this August in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden for a three-day watercolor plein-air painting workshop! \n“All pictures painted inside in the studio will never be as good as the things done outside”\n—Paul Cezanne \nIn French\, “plein air” simply means outdoors. In painting\, it describes a method that contrasts with the academic rules of studio painting. Painting outdoors on location has its challenges\, but is one of the most rewarding painting exercises. The intent of this course is to help students become acquainted with watercolor as a medium for plein-air painting and sketching for both novices and more experienced painters. Within the beautiful setting of NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, learn the basics of handling watercolor as a medium while focusing on the fundamentals of plein-air painting: choosing a subject/scene\, cropping to create interesting compositions\, exploring value and color theory as it applies to color mixing for landscape paintings. \n$60 for the entire course | $45 for members \nRegister Now \nSpace is limited and advanced registration is required. Please contact jrjohnson@noma.org or 504.658.4140 for more information or to inquire about future Art Thrives programs.  \n\nProgram Schedule\nClass time is 9–11 am on these dates: \nWednesday\, August 16 \nThursday\, August 17 \nFriday\, August 18 \nParticipants are expected to attend all three sessions of this course. \n\nAdditional Program Information\nWhat You’ll Need\nWear clothing and shoes that you are comfortable being outdoors and painting in. Protection from the sun is advised (e.g. sunscreen\, hats\, etc.) Please note that the Besthoff Sculpture Garden’s pavilion will serve as our air-conditioned home base whenever a break from the sun is needed. \nAll materials are included with registration. \nWhat You’ll Get\nYou’ll receive pencils and notebooks for sketching\, as well as the work you create throughout the workshop. Plenty of water will be provided daily. \nPlease contact jrjohnson@noma.org or 504.658.4140 with any questions. \nFinancial Assistance\nFinancial Assistance is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please complete a brief form requesting financial assistance\, and a staff member will reach out to you soon. \nApply for Financial Assistance \n\nAbout the Instructor\nRebecca Birtel Madura is a New Orleans-born visual artist and art educator. Many of her colorful paintings represent humanity’s sometimes detached relationship with nature within an urban environment. Working primarily in oils and mixed media\, the emotional impact of color and color relationships is as important as the subject matter itself in her paintings. Recent work is especially concerned with the balance between saturated and muted hues depicted in her abstract compositions. \n\nNOMA’s Art Thrives programs are supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.
