SUMMARY:Book Club Curatorial Program with Curator Mel Buchanan

It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor information or questions about the NOMA Book Club\, please email education@noma.org. \nRegister Now \n\nOctober 2023\nCuratorial Program | Thursday\, October 12\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir by André Leon Talley\nBallantine Books\, 2021\, ISBN-13: 978-0593129272 \nDuring André Leon Talley’s first magazine job\, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview\, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic\, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion\, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily\, befriending fashion’s most important designers (Halston\, Yves Saint Laurent\, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends\, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. \nThere\, he eventually became creative director\, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogue’s masthead\, André also ascended\, and soon became the most influential man in fashion. \n The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the who’s who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic\, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how André not only survived the brutal style landscape but thrived—despite racism\, illicit rumors\, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry—to become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. SUMMARY:Art Thrives Color Theory Workshop (Ages 55 and up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. \nThe power of color in a painting cannot be underestimated. Be it subdued\, bright\, or absent\, it is a key component of any artwork. Along with the ability to mix colors together\, understanding color theory allows one to not only create unity\, but also to convey emotion in a painting. \nColor can be intimidating for beginning painters\, and color theory is a body of principles that provide guidance on the relationship between colors and the physiological impacts of certain color combinations. As an artist\, one does not necessarily need to be concerned with the complex underlying principles of color theory\, but you should understand general applications of color theory and color relationships. \nIn this workshop\, we will use the basic concepts of color theory to learn about how we perceive color. We will explore the qualities of color and how light affects color within a painting. For this workshop\, we will work in oil paint since the colors do not change when dry. \n$160 for the entire course | $120 for members \nRegister Now \nParticipants are expected to attend all eight sessions of this course. \n\nProgram Schedule\nClass time is every Tuesday and Thursday\, 2-4 pm on these dates: \nWeek 1:\nOctober 17 and 19 \nWeek 2:\nOctober 24 and 26 \nWeek 3:\nOctober 31 and November 2 \nWeek 4:\nNovember 7 and 9 \nParticipants are expected to attend all eight sessions of this course. \n\nAdditional Program Information\nWhat You’ll Need\nWear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting messy. All materials are included with registration. \nWhat You’ll Get\nYou’ll receive pencils and notebooks for sketching\, as well as the work you create throughout the workshop. \nFinancial Assistance\nFinancial Assistance is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please complete a brief form requesting financial assistance\, and a staff member will reach out to you soon. \nApply for Financial Assistance \nAbout the Instructor\nRebecca Birtel Madura is a New Orleans–born visual artist and art educator. Many of her colorful paintings represent humanity’s sometimes detached relationship with nature within an urban environment. Working primarily in oils and mixed media\, the emotional impact of color and color relationships is as important as the subject matter itself in her paintings. Recent work is especially concerned with the balance between saturated and muted hues depicted in her abstracted compositions. \n\nNOMA’s Art Thrives programs are supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.

SUMMARY:Baby Artsplay!: Lynda Benglis’s Wave of the World (Ages 0–5)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in City Park for Young Audiences of Louisiana’s Baby Artsplay! Presented by The Helis Foundation on Sunday\, October 22. This special pop-up program for young children under 5 years old and their caregivers is inspired by Lynda Benglis’s Wave of the World installed in New Orleans City Park within walking distance of the New Orleans Museum of Art. \nThis pop-up workshop will be led by Wolf Trap trained YALA teaching artist Ja’nese Brooks Galathe. This multi-modal family workshop will include singing\, moving\, and manipulatives. \nAfter the workshop\, please visit other pieces by Lynda Benglis inside NOMA\, including Wing\, which the museum acquired in 2015 with support from The Helis Foundation. \nRegister now \nThis workshop is free\, thanks to support provided by The Helis Foundation. Space is limited so register today to reserve your spot. \nAbout Lynda Benglis’s Wave of the World\nLynda Benglis\, born in Louisiana\, is an American sculptor and visual artist known especially for her wax paintings and poured latex sculptures. Following the 1984 New Orleans World’s Fair\, her Wave of the World sculpture sat hidden for decades in a former sewage treatment plant in the City of Kenner outside of New Orleans. The Wave suffered years of neglect that led to surface damage and the loss of a large section of the base. \nWith the permission of Kenner\, which owns the sculpture\, and the funding of The Helis Foundation\, Benglis personally undertook and supervised the complete restoration of the work in the summer of 2014. The piece was returned to the Modern Art Foundry in New York where Benglis originally created and cast the work. \nBenglis worked with 1983-84 team member\, Bob Spring\, and his son\, Jeffrey\, present director of Modern Art Foundry\, to pour a new base\, restore the original patina\, and repair the internal plumbing of the fountain. In October of 2015\, The Wave of the World (The Wave) returned to public view in City Park’s “Big Lake.” \n\nAbout Young Audiences of Louisiana\nYoung Audiences of Louisiana (YALA) is the leading provider of arts education and integration programs in the state of Louisiana. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor information or questions about the NOMA Book Club\, please email education@noma.org. \nRegister Now \n\nOctober 2023\nBook Club Discussion | Thursday\, October 26\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir by André Leon Talley\nBallantine Books\, 2021\, ISBN-13: 978-0593129272 \nDuring André Leon Talley’s first magazine job\, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview\, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic\, often caustic designer.
