Entries to be showcased later this month at New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, March 22-28 with winners to be displayed at NOMA
New Orleans, La.- The New Orleans Museum of Art together with The Idea Village are issuing a call for artists to share their 3D printed designs to be included in New Orleans Entrepreneur Week’s inaugural 3D Printed Design Contest. Since New Orleans is an incubator for creativity, and early adopters are making both practical and artistic use of new printing technologies, this contest aims to encourage new forms of production of artwork made possible by 21st-century methods of computer-assisted digital fabrication.
“New Orleans Entrepreneur Week has become a platform for the local entrepreneurial ecosystem to introduce new ideas and showcase emerging industries,” said Tim Williamson Co-founder and CEO of The Idea Village. “This partnership withNOMA is an effort to catalyze energy around 3D printing by tapping into our existing creative culture.”
“As an arts city, we thrive with New Orleans’ historic creativity—including our jazz, food, parades, and architecture. What happens when we build on that tradition with the new artistic modes of 2014? What form does our next creative contribution take?,” asks Mel Buchanan, RosaMary Curator of Decorative Arts & Design, New Orleans Museum of Art.
Entries will be showcased this month at New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, March 22-28, 2014, and winners will be announced at Hugh Evans’ Keynote Lecture on March 27th. The best works will be displayed later at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Artworks will be judged on March 27 by Susan Taylor, The Montine McDaniel Freeman Director (NOMA), Neil Barclay, Executive Director, Contemporary Art Center, and Mel Buchanan, the RosaMary Curator of Decorative Arts & Design (NOMA).

There is a brief screening process for participants in the New Orleans Entrepreneur Week showcase. Participants are asked to send in their contact information, a photograph of their 3D printed design, the dimensions of their object and a short statement (no more than 150 words) describing the design and why it should be included in Entrepreneur Week to Alex at The Idea Village at alex@ideavillage.org by March 20, 2014. The winning entries will be 3D printed (or CNC) objects that step beyond practical applications into the realm of creative expression. Upon screening submissions for appropriate content, physical works will start being accepted beginning on Monday, March 24, at Gallier Hall for display.

The New Orleans Museum of Art, founded in 1910 by Isaac Delgado, houses nearly 40,000 art objects encompassing 4,000 years of world art. Works from the permanent collection, along with continuously changing temporary exhibitions, are on view in the museum’s 46 galleries Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden features work by over 60 artists, including several of the 20th century’s master sculptors.
