NOMA presents L’Odyssée: A Celebration 300 Years in the Making

Presented by IBERIBANK, the 51st Annual Event Takes Place November 4, 2017

NEW ORLEANS, LA – On Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), Odyssey 2017 presented by IBERIABANK will commemorate the city’s Tricentennial and highlight NOMA and the Odyssey Ball’s integral place in New Orleans’ cultural life and history. Now in its 51st year, this signature event has become its own New Orleans tradition. The legacy continues with this year’s theme, L’Odyssée: A Celebration 300 Years in the Making.

The Odyssey Ball celebrates and enhances the New Orleans Museum of Art in an evening of unparalleled elegance. Critically important to the museum and the wide community it serves, Odyssey raises the funds necessary to support NOMA’s nationally-recognized exhibitions and educational programs, which bring more than 250,000 annual visitors to the museum and sculpture garden. This year’s event co-chairs are Carmen and Kelly Duncan, Shaun and Foster Duncan, Sweet and Ben Dupuy, and Kitty and Stephen Sherrill.

Odyssey 2017 features NOMA’s fall exhibition, East of the Mississippi: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography. Although many 19th-century photographers worked in the eastern half of the United States, their pictures, with the exception of Civil War images, have seldom been exhibited. In association with NOMA, this landmark exhibition, co-organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, is the first to exclusively explore a vivid chapter of America’s photographic history—19th-century American landscape photography made east of the Mississippi River. These photographs of the eastern half of the United States helped shape evolving mythologies of the American wilderness, revealed the impact of the Civil War on the physical landscape, and played an important role in industrialization and environmental preservation.

The evening kicks off with the Patron Party from 7 -8 pm, and continues with the gala from 8 pm-midnight. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and DJ/Violinist Timothee Lovelock will provide musical entertainment, while the LSU vs Alabama tailgate à la NOMA occurs in the Café NOMA courtyard. The Jep Epstein Trio will perform in the NOMA Museum Shop courtyard. The gala will be catered by 1718 Events, Hyatt Regency New Orleans, with event design by Z Event Company.
