(New Orleans, LA)- The Isaac Delgado Museum of Art opened its doors on December 16, 1911 owning just 9 works of art. Today NOMA has over 35,000 art objects in the permanent collection.

Join the celebration on Friday, December 16, 2011 as we celebrate NOMA’s 100th Birthday! The museum will be open for 31 continuous hours with music, family art making activities, exhibition walk-throughs and more.

NOMA’s centennial celebration is FREE and open to the public.

December 16th:

NOMA 100: Gifts for the Second Century

In celebration of its centennial year and NOMA’s vast permanent collection, the museum is featuring 110 new permanent collection pieces that were recently donated in honor of NOMA’s 100th birthday.

NOMA 100: Gifts for the Second Century Features Works by Anish Kapoor, Keith Sonnier, Matthew Barney, Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, Kathe Kollwitz, and Gabrielle Münter

NOMA 100 is the culmination of a five-year acquisition project, celebrating the museum’s 100th anniversary with the exhibition of 110 newly acquired objects, ranging from a laminated color C-print by American artist Matthew Barney to a seven-foot long shark headdress from Nigeria. The exhibition, conceived by Director Emeritus John Bullard and trustee Anne Milling and on view through January 22, 2012, reaffirms the museum’s commitment to collecting outstanding works and highlights the dedicated support of the museum’s benefactors.

NOMA 100: Gifts for the Second Century is a celebration of the museum’s growing permanent collection and also marks a pivotal moment of transition with the new directorship of Susan Taylor.

“NOMA 100 is about telling stories: the story of the museum’s evolution from an eleven object collection to a wide-ranging encyclopedic collection of over 35,000 works today; that of Director Emeritus John Bullard’s enthusiasm and tireless pursuit of extraordinary works; and the stories those works of art tell us about a culture, artist, and moment in time,” said Director Susan Taylor.

NOMA ADMISSION
Wednesdays are FREE for all museum visitors. Adults, $10; Seniors (65 and up) and Students, $8; Children 7-¬17, $6; Children 6 and under, free. Free Wednesdays are made possible through the generosity of The Helis Foundation.

ABOUT NOMA AND THE BESTHOFF SCULPTUREGARDEN
The New Orleans Museum of Art, founded in 1910 by Isaac Delgado, houses over 35,000 art objects encompassing 4,000 years of world art. Works from the permanent collection, along with continuously changing temporary exhibitions, are on view in the museum’s 46 galleries Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden features work by 62 artists, including several of the 20th century’s great master sculptors. The Sculpture Garden is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. except for Fridays when it’s open until 8:45 p.m. The New Orleans Museum of Art and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden are fully accessible to handicapped visitors and wheelchairs are available from the front desk.
