On December 16, 1911, thanks to a generous benefactor named Isaac Delgado, the art museum that originally carried his name opened its doors in New Orleans’s City Park. At the time the Isaac Delgado Museum of Art owned only nine works of art but it was a good start.

Today, a full century later, the renamed New Orleans Museum of Art has more than 35,000 art objects in its permanent collection, with new works being acquired regularly. In commemoration of the museum’s centennial, it will be open free of charge for 31 continuous hours, from 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 16 through 5:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17.

The event will feature live music, family art-making activities, exhibition walk-throughs and more. The museum is featuring 110 new permanent collection pieces that were recently donated in honor of NOMA’s 100th birthday.
