His grief-stricken sister\, Ajany\, just returned from Brazil\, and their father bring his body back to their crumbling home in the Kenyan drylands\, seeking some comfort and peace. But the murder has stirred memories long left untouched and unleashed a series of unexpected Odidi and Ajany’s mercurial mother flees in a fit of rage; a young Englishman arrives at the Ogandas’ house\, seeking his missing father; a hardened policeman who has borne witness to unspeakable acts reopens a cold case; and an all-seeing Trader with a murky identity plots an overdue revenge. In scenes stretching from the violent upheaval of contemporary Kenya back through a shocking political assassination in 1969 and the Mau Mau uprisings against British colonial rule in the 1950s\, we come to learn the secrets held by this parched landscape\, buried deep within the shared past of the family and of a conflicted nation. \nHere is a spellbinding novel about a brother and sister who have lost their way; about how myths come to pass\, history is written\, and war stains us forever. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. But only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. They’re the guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits\, keeping a watchful eye on the two million square foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamorous fledgling career at The New Yorker\, Patrick Bringley never thought he’d be one of them. Then his older brother was diagnosed with fatal cancer and he found himself needing to escape the mundane clamor of daily life. So he quit The New Yorker and sought solace in the most beautiful place he knew. \nTo his surprise and the reader’s delight\, this temporary refuge becomes Bringley’s home away from home for a decade. We follow him as he guards delicate treasures from Egypt to Rome\, strolls the labyrinths beneath the galleries\, wears out nine pairs of company shoes\, and marvels at the beautiful works in his care. Bringley enters the museum as a ghost\, silent and almost invisible\, but soon finds his voice and his tribe: the artworks and their creators and the lively subculture of museum guards—a gorgeous mosaic of artists\, musicians\, blue-collar stalwarts\, immigrants\, cutups\, and dreamers. As his bonds with his colleagues and the art grow\, he comes to understand how fortunate he is to be walled off in this little world\, and how much it resembles the best aspects of the larger world to which he gradually\, gratefully returns. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with Musician Joseph Darensburg
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the galleries each Wednesday for weekly talks with artists\, curators\, and other special guests. During these casual conversations\, we’ll take a close look at different works currently on view at NOMA. \nIn celebration of Creole & Indigenous Heritage Month\, musician Joseph Darensbourg will sing a few Kouri-Vini (Louisiana Creole) songs and read Atakapa Ishak poetry in the Great Hall. \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the front desk for directions to the appropriate gallery. \nGET TICKETS \nTo book your ticket in advance\, click the link above and select the day for the gallery talk you’d like to attend. \n\nAbout Joseph Darensbourg\nJoseph is a native of Bulbancha (Choctaw for “place of many tongues\,” aka New Orleans) from the Faubourg Treme\, the oldest free people of color neighborhood in the country (predating the US itself). This neighborhood of Gens de Couleur Libres is a tri-racial ethnic blend comprised of Native Americans\, Europeans\, and African ethnic Creoles who speak a lingua franca known as Kouri Vini as well as Colonial Louisiana French. \nA performer of ethnic folk musics\, Joseph is a singer\, violinist\, and percussionist member of Les Cenelles ensemble\, which specializes in music inspired by resistance and protest poetry and Les Cenelles Gens de Couleur Libres\, civil rights activists opposing the Code Noir during US Reconstruction. Joseph focuses on the Bayou Ballads plantation songs (1840s–80s). \nA bookbinder by trade—trained at the oldest bookbindery in the US (Harcourt\, Boston)—Joseph is also a visual art alum of NOCCA\, as well as a member of the oldest early music ensemble in the America\, New Orleans Musica da Camera (founded in 1965\, as was Joseph).

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion: Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age
DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copies\, and selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor information or questions about the NOMA Book Club\, please email education@noma.org. \nRegister Now \n\nOctober 2023\nBook Club Discussion | Tuesday\, November 28\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nFour Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age by Annalee Newitz\nNorton\, 2022\, ISBN-13: 978-0393882452 \nIn Four Lost Cities\, acclaimed science journalist Annalee Newitz takes readers on an entertaining and mind-bending adventure into the deep history of urban life. Investigating across the centuries and around the world\, Newitz explores the rise and fall of four ancient cities\, each the center of a sophisticated civilization: the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in Central Turkey\, the Roman vacation town of Pompeii on Italy’s southern coast\, the medieval megacity of Angkor in Cambodia\, and the indigenous metropolis Cahokia\, which stood beside the Mississippi River where East St. Louis is today. \nNewitz travels to all four sites and investigates the cutting-edge research in archaeology\, revealing the mix of environmental changes and political turmoil that doomed these ancient settlements. Tracing the early development of urban planning\, Newitz also introduces us to the often anonymous workers―slaves\, women\, immigrants\, and manual laborers― who built these cities and created monuments that lasted millennia. SUMMARY:Elders Sacred Talk Series with Ronnie Moore and Doratha “Dodie” Smith Simmons
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives initiative and the Congo Square Preservation Society present the Elders Sacred Talk Series with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while learning firsthand about the impact they’ve had on the city. \nOn November 1\, 5:30 pm\, in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts\, the program will highlight Civil Rights activists Ronnie Moore and Doratha “Dodie” Smith Simmons. Doors open at 5 pm. \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \nTo book your ticket in advance\, click the link above. \n\nAbout the Speakers\n\nRonnie Moore\nRonnie Moore is a veteran civil rights activist\, community developer\, and photographer. At the age of 15\, he and his peers attempted to integrate a public park in his hometown of New Orleans. In 1961\, while a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, he led a group of 2\,500 students to the state capitol to protest the city's hiring policies and segregated lunch counters. That activism led to his arrest and expulsion from the university and prompted his full-time commitment to CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality). Moore worked as a field secretary for CORE from 1961 to 1965\, which included establishing voter registration initiatives in parts of Louisiana. From 1965 – 1973\, he worked as the executive director of the Scholarship\, Education and Defense Fund for Racial Equality\, Inc. Moore also served as the director of the Institute for Resident Initiatives at Tulane University from 1996 to 2005 and the director of the African American Youth Congress from 1982 to 1994. During his lifetime of activism\, Moore was arrested over 17 times and held in solitary confinement for 56 days for advocating for voting rights in Louisiana. \n\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons joined New Orleans chapter of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) in 1961 when she was 14 or 15 years old. It was one of the most active chapters in the region and she became a very active member participating in sit-ins and picketing. Her participation resulted in police arresting her several times. Her dedication led her to become a Freedom Rider and test the law that made segregation on public buses unconstitutional. She and other members of the New Orleans CORE rode a bus from New Orleans to McComb\, MS where they were met with severe violence and some of them suffered life-threatening injuries. “After the rides\, Smith-Simmons trained freedom riders and taught members how to participate in nonviolent protests. In the ‘60s\, she also worked to integrate hotels and Florida beaches and participated in the March on Washington. \n\nAbout Congo Square Preservation Society\nThe Congo Square Preservation Society serves as a continuing catalyst in the resurrection and continuation of activities\, advocacy\, and preservation of historic and sacred Congo Square in New Orleans. Learn more at https://www.congosquarepreservationsociety.org/. \n \n\nNOMA’s Art Thrives programs are supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion: The Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion\, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily\, befriending fashion’s most important designers (Halston\, Yves Saint Laurent\, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends\, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. \nThere\, he eventually became creative director\, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogue’s masthead\, André also ascended\, and soon became the most influential man in fashion. \n The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the who’s who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic\, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how André not only survived the brutal style landscape but thrived—despite racism\, illicit rumors\, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry—to become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion. SUMMARY:Art Thrives Color Theory Workshop (Ages 55 and up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. \nThe power of color in a painting cannot be underestimated. Be it subdued\, bright\, or absent\, it is a key component of any artwork. Along with the ability to mix colors together\, understanding color theory allows one to not only create unity\, but also to convey emotion in a painting. \nColor can be intimidating for beginning painters\, and color theory is a body of principles that provide guidance on the relationship between colors and the physiological impacts of certain color combinations. As an artist\, one does not necessarily need to be concerned with the complex underlying principles of color theory\, but you should understand general applications of color theory and color relationships. \nIn this workshop\, we will use the basic concepts of color theory to learn about how we perceive color. We will explore the qualities of color and how light affects color within a painting. For this workshop\, we will work in oil paint since the colors do not change when dry. \n$160 for the entire course | $120 for members \nRegister Now \nParticipants are expected to attend all eight sessions of this course. \n\nProgram Schedule\nClass time is every Tuesday and Thursday\, 2-4 pm on these dates: \nWeek 1:\nOctober 17 and 19 \nWeek 2:\nOctober 24 and 26 \nWeek 3:\nOctober 31 and November 2 \nWeek 4:\nNovember 7 and 9 \nParticipants are expected to attend all eight sessions of this course. \n\nAdditional Program Information\nWhat You’ll Need\nWear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting messy. All materials are included with registration. \nWhat You’ll Get\nYou’ll receive pencils and notebooks for sketching\, as well as the work you create throughout the workshop. \nFinancial Assistance\nFinancial Assistance is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please complete a brief form requesting financial assistance\, and a staff member will reach out to you soon. \nApply for Financial Assistance \nAbout the Instructor\nRebecca Birtel Madura is a New Orleans–born visual artist and art educator. Many of her colorful paintings represent humanity’s sometimes detached relationship with nature within an urban environment. Working primarily in oils and mixed media\, the emotional impact of color and color relationships is as important as the subject matter itself in her paintings. Recent work is especially concerned with the balance between saturated and muted hues depicted in her abstracted compositions. \n\nNOMA’s Art Thrives programs are supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion: Fabric: The Hidden History of the Material World
DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. \nRegister Now \n\nSeptember 2023\nBook Club Discussion | Tuesday\, September 26\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nFABRIC: The Hidden History of the Material World by Victoria Finlay\nPenguin Books\, 2022\, ISBN-13: 978-1639361632 \nHow is a handmade fabric helping save an ancient forest? \nWhy is a famous fabric pattern from India best known by the name of a Scottish town? How is a Chinese dragon robe a diagram of the whole universe? What is the difference between how the Greek Fates and the Viking Norns used threads to tell our destiny? \nIn Fabric\, bestselling author Victoria Finlay spins us round the globe\, weaving stories of our relationship with cloth and asking how and why people through the ages have made it\, worn it\, invented it\, and made symbols out of it. And sometimes why they have fought for it. She beats the inner bark of trees into cloth in Papua New Guinea\, fails to handspin cotton in Guatemala\, visits tweed weavers at their homes in Harris\, and has lessons in patchwork-making in Gee’s Bend\, Alabama – where in the 1930s\, deprived of almost everything they owned\, a community of women turned quilting into an art form. During the Black Arts Movement\, Salaam was a member of John O’Neal’s Free Southern Theater for five years and founded BLACKARTSOUTH. Changing his name along the way to Kalamu ya Salaam\, which is Kiswahili for “pen of peace\,” he founded Ahidiana Work Study Center. He also assumed the editorship of the Black Collegian magazine\, a post he held from 1970 to 1983. Salaam published cultural and political essays in Black World\, Black Scholar\, and Black Books Bulletin. In 1977\, he was part of the first African American activist delegation to the People’s Republic of China. \nToday\, he is a senior partner of Bright Moments\, a public relations firm. A Flagboy for the Yellow Pocahontas tribe since the mid-1960s\, Harris became Big Chief of his tribe\, the Mandingo Warriors\, in 1984\, after the epiphanic first calling of the Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi\, originally wearing a black suit. Today\, Harris is one of the most recognizable chiefs in the city and a community leader. \n\nAbout Congo Square Preservation Society\nThe Congo Square Preservation Society serves as a continuing catalyst in the resurrection and continuation of activities\, advocacy\, and preservation of historic and sacred Congo Square in New Orleans.
