DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives initiative for adults 55 and older is proud to partner with the Congo Square Preservation Society to present the Elders Sacred Talk Series\, four-panel discussions with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while learning firsthand about the impact they’ve had on the city. \nJoin us on October 4\, at 5:30 pm in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts for the second program featuring our second two honorees of the series: award-winning percussionist Bill Summers and Nana Anoa Nantambu\, educator and community leader. Sula Janet Evans of the Congo Square Preservation Society will moderate the conversation. Doors open at 5 pm.\n \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \n\nAbout the Speakers\nBill Summers\nBill Summers is a multiple Grammy Award nominee and Billboard Music Award–winning percussionist. He has studied the rhythmic connections between Africa\, the Caribbean\, and the Americas for more than three decades\, making him a leader in the field of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz percussion. Summers performed with Herbie Hancock and worked with Quincy Jones on scores for Roots\, The Wiz\, and The Color Purple. His performance groups included Bill Summers & Summers Heat\, which produced seven albums; Los Hombres Calientes\, which produced six albums; and the Headhunters\, which released nine albums. \nOver the years\, Summers recorded and/or toured with numerous artists including Tupac Shakur\, Janet Jackson\, Anita Baker\, Carlos Santana\, Young Jeezy\, Keyshia Cole\, Miles Davis\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Malik Yoba\, Kenny Loggins\, Arsenio Hall\, Nina Simone\, Dianne Reeves\, Prince\, Michael Jackson\, Sting\, Stevie Wonder\, Sarah Vaughn\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Jay-Z\, Kanye West\, Kool & The Gang\, Teddy Pendergrass\, Barry White\, The Gap Band\, Jill Scott\, and Earth Wind and Fire. \nBill Summers—Baba Eshubi—is an initiated Priest of Orisha Esu Elegba. \nNana Anoa Nantambu\nNana Anoa Nantambu\, daughter of Roy and Mary Booker Cains\, is a perpetual educator and student. After attending McDonogh #35 High School\, she earned a BS in Mathematics from UNO and a PhD in Education (Research Methods and Statistics) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has taught in universities\, community colleges\, training programs\, and her community-based mathematics learning center\, Neighborhood Math Place. She also lectured at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State\, Nigeria\, for four years. As an independent consultant\, she provided program evaluations and community assessments for local nonprofit organizations for nearly 18 years. Nana is an initiated Priestess of Yemaya and was crowned in Cuba. \nHer present work\, her life’s calling\, evolved through Wholely Living Simply Living\, a not-for-profit organization that she started in Durham\, North Carolina\, while displaced after Hurricane Katrina. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \n\nAbout the Speakers\nKalamu ya Salaam\nKalamu ya Salaam was born Val Ferdinand III in New Orleans on March 24\, 1947. Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans\, Salaam became interested in writing and organizing for social change. During the Black Arts Movement\, Salaam was a member of John O’Neal’s Free Southern Theater for five years and founded BLACKARTSOUTH. Changing his name along the way to Kalamu ya Salaam\, which is Kiswahili for “pen of peace\,” he founded Ahidiana Work Study Center. He also assumed the editorship of the Black Collegian magazine\, a post he held from 1970 to 1983. Salaam published cultural and political essays in Black World\, Black Scholar\, and Black Books Bulletin. In 1977\, he was part of the first African American activist delegation to the People’s Republic of China. \nToday\, he is a senior partner of Bright Moments\, a public relations firm. He is also the founder of WordBand\, a poetry performance group; the NOMMO Literary Society; and Runagate Press. Salaam has written seven books of poetry. Louisiana State University honored his play The Breath of Life\, and BLK Love Song #1 won a Best of Fringe Award from The Manchester Evening News in England. A respected music writer and critic\, he is the arts and entertainment editor for The New Orleans Tribune. He regularly contributes to Wavelength\, The Louisiana Weekly\, and The New Orleans Music Magazine. He was executive director of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for many years and produced A NATION OF POETS for the National Black Arts Festival. \nBig Chief Victor Harris\nHaving begun suiting as a Black Masking Indian at age fifteen\, Victor Harris is the longest continuously suiting Black Masking Indian alive with over 50 years of suiting\, following the untimely death of Chief of Chiefs Allison “Tootie” Montana\, Big Chief of the Yellow Pocahontas. A Flagboy for the Yellow Pocahontas tribe since the mid-1960s\, Harris became Big Chief of his tribe\, the Mandingo Warriors\, in 1984\, after the epiphanic first calling of the Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi\, originally wearing a black suit. DESCRIPTION:Due to an excessive heat advisory for the New Orleans area on 6/18\, Motion to Move 2023 will take place entirely inside NOMA. \nIn partnership with Edward Spots and Magnolia Dance & Company\, NOMA is excited to present Motion to Move 2023\, a walking installation of pop-up dance art celebrating Juneteenth. SUMMARY:Celebrating Juneteenth at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:On June 19\, 1865\, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America\, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay\, Texas\, with news of freedom for over 250\,000 African Americans. With the principles of self-determination\, citizenship\, and democracy magnifying their hopes and dreams\, those Texans held fast to the promise of true liberty for all. \nOne year later\, in 1866\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in recognition of Black liberation nationwide\, continuing the celebration and lobbying for the federal holiday status granted in 2021. \nJuneteenth is a time to gather with family and community\, honor the present\, and reflect on shared history and tradition. Recognizing the legacy of liberation that Juneteenth represents\, NOMA invites you to reflect on the theme of “movement” as you engage with artworks in the galleries and Besthoff Sculpture Garden. \nIn celebration of Juneteenth\, NOMA is free to the public on Sunday\, June 18. \n\nActivities\n\nFreedom at the Mat\n10:30 am | Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, Sculpture Pavilion\nCelebrate Juneteenth at the New Orleans Museum of Art Sculpture Garden by expressing your freedom in community with others in a 60-minute joy of freedom movement & mindfulness experience presented by Freedom At The Mat. \nSIGN UP NOW \nMusic in the Garden\n2 pm | Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, Pine Grove\nDue to excessive heat\, Music in the Garden will move inside NOMA’s Great Hall. \nEncounter the sounds of local New Orleans musicians while strolling through the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden on select Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 pm. \nJoin us on Sunday\, June 18\, for a performance featuring Amine Boucetta. The concert will take place in Pine Grove\, the first green space by the main entrance on Dueling Oaks Dr. \nLEARN MORE \nArt-Making Activity\n10 am–4 pm | Great Hall\nExplore freedom of expression in a figure drawing art-making activity with NOMA educators. Live models will be present every hour on the half hour.
