SUMMARY:Celebrating Juneteenth at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:On June 19\, 1865\, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America\, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay\, Texas\, with news of freedom for over 250\,000 African Americans. With the principles of self-determination\, citizenship\, and democracy magnifying their hopes and dreams\, those Texans held fast to the promise of true liberty for all. \nOne year later\, in 1866\, Black people in Texas reclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in recognition of Black liberation nationwide\, continuing the celebration and lobbying for the federal holiday status granted in 2021. \nJuneteenth is a time to gather with family and community\, honor the present\, and reflect on shared history and tradition. Recognizing the legacy of liberation that Juneteenth represents\, NOMA invites you to reflect on the theme of “movement” as you engage with artworks in the galleries and Besthoff Sculpture Garden. \nIn celebration of Juneteenth\, NOMA is free to the public on Sunday\, June 18. \n\nActivities\n\nFreedom at the Mat\n10:30 am | Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, Sculpture Pavilion\nCelebrate Juneteenth at the New Orleans Museum of Art Sculpture Garden by expressing your freedom in community with others in a 60-minute joy of freedom movement & mindfulness experience presented by Freedom At The Mat. \nSIGN UP NOW \nMusic in the Garden\n2 pm | Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, Pine Grove\nDue to excessive heat\, Music in the Garden will move inside NOMA’s Great Hall. \nEncounter the sounds of local New Orleans musicians while strolling through the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden on select Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 pm. \nJoin us on Sunday\, June 18\, for a performance featuring Amine Boucetta. The concert will take place in Pine Grove\, the first green space by the main entrance on Dueling Oaks Dr. \nLEARN MORE \nArt-Making Activity\n10 am–4 pm | Great Hall\nExplore freedom of expression in a figure drawing art-making activity with NOMA educators. Live models will be present every hour on the half hour.

SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Shakespeare Alive! (Ages 55 and Up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. In collaboration with the NOLA Project\, we invite you to join us for an eight-session theater course themed “Shakespeare Alive!” \nFor many Americans\, Shakespeare is something they associate with reading and studying in school. But in truth\, his work was meant to be seen\, heard\, and enjoyed aloud and in person. In Shakespeare Alive!\, participants will have the opportunity to interact with the Bard the way actors do—by learning to speak verse\, apply actions\, use vocal techniques\, and learn about all the hidden clues Shakespeare provides actors within the text. \nThis is an adult acting course for beginners and advanced students. The course will conclude with a celebratory performance for friends and family members in which each participant gets time to shine on the stage. The only things required are a curious mind and an open heart.  \nSpace is limited and advanced registration is required. \nREGISTER NOW \nPlease contact jrjohnson@noma.org or 504.658.4140 for more information or to inquire about future Art Thrives programs \n$160 for the entire course | $120 for members \n\nADDITIONAL PROGRAM INFORMATION\nProgram Schedule\nClass time is 5–6:30 pm on these dates: \nMonday\, May 15 \nMonday\, May 22 \nTuesday\, May 30 \nMonday\, June 5 \nMonday\, June 12 \nTuesday\, June 20 \nMonday\, June 26 \nThursday\, June 29 \nParticipants are expected to attend all 8 sessions of this course. \nWhat You’ll Need\nPlease wear clothing and shoes that you are comfortable in.  \nWhat You’ll Get\nRegistration includes writing utensils\, notebooks for note taking\, and free admission to the NOLA Project’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  \nFinancial Assistance\nFinancial Assistance is available on a first come\, first served basis. Please complete a brief form requesting financial assistance\, and a staff member will reach out to you soon. \nAPPLY FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE \n\nABOUT THE NOLA PROJECT\nThe NOLA Project is an ensemble theatre company that challenges\, entertains\, and engages diverse New Orleans audiences through adventurous productions of classic works\, the development of innovative new plays\, and practical education opportunities. Norton & Company\, 2022\, ISBN-13: 978-1324006015 \nIn freewheeling 1920s Paris\, Kiki de Montparnasse captivated as a nightclub performer\, sold out gallery showings of her paintings\, starred in Surrealist films\, and shared drinks and ideas with the likes of Jean Cocteau and Marcel Duchamp. Her best-selling memoir―featuring an introduction by Ernest Hemingway―made front-page news in France and was immediately banned in America. All before she turned thirty. Kiki and Man Ray met in 1921 during a chance encounter at a café. What followed was an explosive decade-long connection\, both professional and romantic\, during which the couple grew and experimented as artists\, competed for fame\, and created many of the shocking images that cemented Man Ray’s reputation as one of the great artists of the modern era. The works they made together\, including the Surrealist icons Le Violon d’Ingres and Noire et blanche\, now set records at auction. Charting their volatile relationship\, award-winning historian Mark Braude illuminates for the first time Kiki’s seminal influence not only on Man Ray’s art\, but on the culture of 1920s Paris and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F.
