SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Shakespeare Alive! (Ages 55 and Up)
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives program creates opportunities exclusively for adults ages 55 and up to learn new skills while building community and having fun. In collaboration with the NOLA Project\, we invite you to join us for an eight-session theater course themed “Shakespeare Alive!” \nFor many Americans\, Shakespeare is something they associate with reading and studying in school. But in truth\, his work was meant to be seen\, heard\, and enjoyed aloud and in person. In Shakespeare Alive!\, participants will have the opportunity to interact with the Bard the way actors do—by learning to speak verse\, apply actions\, use vocal techniques\, and learn about all the hidden clues Shakespeare provides actors within the text. \nThis is an adult acting course for beginners and advanced students. They fell in love with a style of music created over 50 years ago by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen\, and now they are bringing it to the people of New Orleans. You can expect lots of Fela Kuti tunes and some Afrofunk from ’70s Ghana and Benin\, but the majority of Kumasi’s live show features original music stemming from West African concepts\, composed to make any crowd move and groove. \n  \n\n\nDJ Sets from GAC and lo tide\nGreat Hall\nFrench-Algerian photographer and DJ\, GAC is based in New Orleans where she spins her large collection of vinyls around town. Norton & Company\, 2022\, ISBN-13: 978-1324006015 \nIn freewheeling 1920s Paris\, Kiki de Montparnasse captivated as a nightclub performer\, sold out gallery showings of her paintings\, starred in Surrealist films\, and shared drinks and ideas with the likes of Jean Cocteau and Marcel Duchamp. Her best-selling memoir―featuring an introduction by Ernest Hemingway―made front-page news in France and was immediately banned in America. All before she turned thirty. Kiki and Man Ray met in 1921 during a chance encounter at a café. What followed was an explosive decade-long connection\, both professional and romantic\, during which the couple grew and experimented as artists\, competed for fame\, and created many of the shocking images that cemented Man Ray’s reputation as one of the great artists of the modern era. Three determined artists–Louis Armstrong\, Dave Brubeck\, and Iola Brubeck used this double standard as the central message and take a stand against segregation by writing and performing a jazz musical titled The Real Ambassadors. First conceived by the Brubecks in 1956\, the musical’s journey to the stage for its 1962 premiere tracks extraordinary twists and turns across the backdrop of the civil rights movement. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. SUMMARY:Mindfulness at NOMA
DESCRIPTION:From January 21 through February 11\, NOMA presents a four-session mindfulness course with Dr. Jayashree Rao. Mindfulness is defined as experiencing the present moment with open curiosity\, without judgment\, and with a willingness to be with what is. \nMindfulness training teaches skills to help individuals \n\nCope with the stress\, pain\, and challenges of everyday life.\nDeal with distressing events with grace and composure.\nBe present and alive in the here and now.\n\nAbout Mindfulness at NOMA\nThis four-part mindfulness course will be held on Saturdays\, 9:30 am–1:00 pm\, in NOMA’s Woldenberg Boardroom on the museum’s second floor. Participants sign up for the entire series\, and attendance is capped at 30 people.  \nParticipants will learn to develop mindfulness through guided meditation and brief exercises that will help them experience the present moment during everyday activities. Although no specific outcome is promised\, participants typically report feeling more “in tune” with themselves and others. In addition\, research has shown significant beneficial effects in dealing with stress\, anxiety\, high blood pressure\, depression\, chronic pain\, and diabetes. \n $80 General Admission | $50 NOMA members | $70 Seniors (65+) | $65 University Students \nRegister Now \nAbout the Instructor\nDr. Jayashree Rao is a retired pediatric endocrinologist who spent thirty years teaching\, researching\, and practicing medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center and Children’s Hospital. For the past several years\, Dr. Rao has practiced and led others in practicing mindfulness\, employing techniques learned in the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course offered by Dr. Dave Potter.
