SUMMARY:Bookbinding Workshop with LaVonna Varnado-Brown and Jennella Young
DESCRIPTION:Join Creative Assembly member LaVonna Varnado-Brown and Brooklyn based artist Jennella Young for a creative experience with bookbinding. Explore how women have stitched together culture and community across time and space. \nThis program for adults ages 18 and up threads together concepts of bookbinding\, using needle and raffia\, taking inspiration from works currently on view in New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. \nRegister Now \n\nLaVonna Varnado-Brown has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans and with Beginning with Children\, a Brooklyn–based college and career preparatory program). Varnado-Brown finds inspiration in the community through facilitating workshops that create intentional space to engage in creative grounding practices that raise our spatial awareness and kinesthetic responses to one another and our environment. \nJennella Young is a Brooklyn-based painter and mixed-media artist. Her work elevates the voices and lost stories of women of color and draws from magical realism’s tradition of complex\, beautifully operatic tellings of the history of the Atlantic Slave Trade and colonization. Her practice includes an emphasis on portraiture—primarily of Black and Brown women from archival photos—and incorporates watercolor\, acrylic\, ink\, pastel\, bookmaking\, and journaling. Young holds a BA in Psychology from Lehigh University\, an MA in Counseling Psychology from New York University\, and has completed advanced graduate coursework in art history and library and information science at Pratt Institute. Over the years\, she has merged her academic background with a vibrant creative practice\, enriched by continued study at the School of Visual Arts\, Educational Alliance Art School\, Center for Book Arts\, and Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venezia. Young has developed city-wide initiatives that expand access to arts\, mentorship\, and youth programming across New York City. She is a 2024 Create Change Fellow with The Laundromat Project and has collaborated with institutions including the Apollo Theater Oral History Project\, Weeksville Heritage Center\, the Guggenheim Museum\, and the New York Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Art Thief: A True Story of Love\, Crime\, and a Dangerous Obsession
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. \nIt is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nRegister Now \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nThe Art Thief: A True Story of Love\, Crime\, and a Dangerous Obsession\nby Michael Finkel\nStéphane Bréitwieser is the most prolific art thief of all time. \nHe pulled off more than 200 heists\, often in crowded museums in broad daylight. \nHis girlfriend served as his accomplice. \nHis collection was worth an estimated $2 billion. \nHe never sold a piece\, displaying his stolen art in his attic bedroom. \nHe felt like a king. \nUntil everything came to a shocking end. \nIn this spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius\, Michael Finkel gives us one of the most remarkable true-crime narratives of our times\, a riveting story of art\, theft\, love\, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion | The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History
DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copies. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. This long practice of ignoring Indigenous history is changing\, however\, as a new generation of scholars insists that any full American history address the struggle\, survival\, and resurgence of American Indian nations. Indigenous history is essential to understanding the evolution of modern America. \nNed Blackhawk interweaves five centuries of Native and non‑Native histories\, from Spanish colonial exploration to the rise of Native American self-determination in the late twentieth century. In this transformative synthesis\, he shows that \n• European colonization in the 1600s was never a predetermined success; \n• Native nations helped shape England’s crisis of empire; \n• the first shots of the American Revolution were prompted by Indian affairs in the interior; \n• California Indians targeted by federally funded militias were among the first casualties of the Civil War; \n• the Union victory forever recalibrated Native communities across the West; \n• twentieth-century reservation activists refashioned American law and policy. \nBlackhawk’s retelling of U.S. history acknowledges the enduring power\, agency\, and survival of Indigenous peoples\, yielding a truer account of the United States and revealing anew the varied meanings of America. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n                                                \nEducation and outreach initiatives at NOMA are supported in part by the Zemurray Foundation; the Lois and Lloyd Hawkins Jr. Foundation; The Helis Foundation; The Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation; The City of New Orleans; IBERIABANK; The Wagner Foundation; Janice Parmelee and Bill Hammack; the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative\, funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation; Sara and David Kelso; Patrick F. Featuring an expansive range of work drawn from NOMA’s exceptional glass collection\, the exhibition will connect works throughout the museum and Besthoff Sculpture Garden\, showcasing the many forms and artistry of glass work from Egyptian pieces to contemporary works\, including a new major acquisition by Fred Wilson and commissions from Sharif Bey. The exhibition presents a variety of perspectives on how glass is connected to histories of scientific discovery\, foodways\, and artistic innovation\, and the accompanying catalogue highlights the perspectives of a glass artist\, a laboratory scientist\, a member of New Orleans’ tradition of Black Masking Indians\, and a sculpture conservator\, alongside those of historians and curators. Teresa Tumminello Brader\, niece of the convicted art forger William Toye\, retells her family’s experience as she discovers her uncle’s misdeeds after decades of secrecy. Personal reflections and newspaper records alternate with a fictionalized reimagining of Toye’s complicated life. On both sides of the story\, what emerges is an attempt to honor Louisiana artist Clementine Hunter’s legacy without flinching from the painful realities that come from reckoning with family bonds. Empathetic and honest\, Letting in Air and Light will inspire you to look more closely at your own history and wonder what else you might have missed. His fate—and the fate of the wooden tiger he helps create—will mirror the vicissitudes of nations and dynasties ravaged by war across India and Europe. \nWorking alongside the legendary French clockmaker Lucien du Leze\, Abbas hones his craft\, learns French\, and meets Jehanne\, the daughter of a French expatriate. When Du Leze is finally permitted to return home to Rouen\, he invites Abbas to come along as his apprentice. But by the time Abbas travels to Europe\, Tipu’s palace has been looted by British forces\, and the tiger automaton has disappeared. To prove himself\, Abbas must retrieve the tiger from an estate in the English countryside\, where it is displayed in a collection of plundered art.
