All meetings begin at 12 pm. \nFor information or questions about the NOMA Book Club\, please email kmccurdy@noma.org. \nRegister Now \n\nJune 2024\nBook Club Discussion | Thursday\, June 20\, 12 pm\n\n\n\n\n\nCalling for a Blanket Dance by Oscar Hokeah \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTold in a series of voices\, Calling for a Blanket Dance takes us into the life of Ever Geimausaddle through the multigenerational perspectives of his family as they soldier through a myriad of difficulties: his father’s sudden kidney failure and subsequent disability\, his mother’s struggle to hold on to her job and care for her husband\, the constant resettlement of the family\, and Ever’s own bottled-up rage at the instability all around him. Meanwhile\, all of Ever’s relatives have ideas about who he is and who he should be. His Cherokee grandmother urges the family to move across the state to find security; his dying grandfather hopes to reunite him with his heritage through traditional gourd dances; his Kiowa cousin reminds him that he’s connected to an ancestral past. And once an adult\, Ever must take the strength given to him by his relatives to save not only himself\, but also the next generation of family. \nHow will this young man visualize a place for himself when the world hasn’t given him a place to start with? Speakers will highlight “how the exhibition explores Mutu’s evolution as a collage artist\, as she pursues an inquiry related to the representation of Black women’s bodies.”  \nSymposium | Rending\, Mending\, & Reusing: Art\, Justice\, & the Environment\n12:45–2 pm in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts\nArt is a unique technology that can distill complexity into simple human gestures that\, when experienced\, facilitate a deeper understanding of our world\, perhaps one that can lead to a greater sense of agency around environmental issues. It pushes the documentary medium in unexpected ways by opening with three contemporary South Asian-American women who recreate British colonial postcards from the early 20th century.

During these casual conversations\, we’ll take a close look at different works currently on view at NOMA. \nThis week\, Orlando Hernández Ying\, NOMA’s Lapis Curator of the Art of the Americas\, leads an exploration of Jupiter with a Thunderbolt by an unknown 17th-century artist and Auguste Rodin’s Age of Bronze\, 1875-1876. Hernández Ying will explore how the male body\, gesture\, and balance are treated in the two sculptures and discuss how these two works\, crafted centuries apart\, are influenced by the queer gaze. This gallery talk will begin in the Great Hall and travel to the second-floor elevator lobby. \nFree with museum admission. One year later\, Americans across the country were clamoring to see his art. How did the controversial leader of the Paris avant-garde break through to the heart of American culture? \nThe answer begins a generation earlier\, when a renegade Irish American lawyer named John Quinn set out to build the greatest collection of Picassos in existence. His dream of a museum to house them died with him\, until it was rediscovered by Alfred H. Barr\, Jr.\, a cultural visionary who\, at the age of twenty-seven\, became the director of New York’s new Museum of Modern Art. \nPicasso’s War is the never-before-told story about how a single exhibition\, a decade in the making\, irrevocably changed American taste\, and in doing so saved dozens of the twentieth century’s most enduring artworks from the Nazis. The night will spotlight a showcase of music organized by Sari Jordan & Mahmoud Chouki\, featuring both local and visiting musicians in a women- and queer-dominated band. They are available for purchase directly from our partner vendors. \n\nNOMA AT NIGHT LINE-UP\n\nDJ Set by HEELTURN\nIn the Great Hall\nWith a strong urge to help build community and a wide taste in music\, New Orleans native HEELTURN started out honing his DJ skills on WTUL with a show he likes to call “Accepted Eclectic.” From there he has bounced all over the city bringing a unique mix of soul\, disco\, hip-hop\, R&B\, bounce\, baile funk\, house\, and club music to a wide variety of audiences. He has opened Washed Out\, guest DJ-ed Set De Flo at the Hi-Ho Lounge (spotlighted by Boiler Room and Resident Advisor)\, performed with Katey Red\, and played music festivals including BUKU and Bonnaroo. His love of the local music scene has led him to contribute writing to Antigravity and to co-book for the POC-focused punk music festival Deep Cuts.  \nArt-Making Activity: Assemblage\n6:00–9:30 pm in the museum’s first-floor galleries\n  \n \nFeatured Exhibition | Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined\nThis major solo exhibition of work by Wangechi Mutu brings together nearly one hundred sculptures\, paintings\, collages\, drawings\, and films to present the breadth of the Kenyan–American artist’s multidisciplinary practice from the mid-1990s to today. \n\nAdditional Credits\nMahmoud Chouki\nNOMA is pleased to work with internationally renowned multi-instrumentalist and composer Mahmoud Chouki\, who is organizing musical performances for each NOMA at Night program in collaboration with museum staff. \nMahmoud Chouki is a master guitarist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and composer living and working in New Orleans. His art draws together music from many different international contexts to consider how music can speak across cultural divides. His own compositions incorporate musical influences from across the globe\, ranging from European classical\, Andalusian from Southern Spain\, Levantine music from the Middle East\, Maghrebian music from North Africa\, Latin American music\, and jazz from the Southern United States. Integrating sounds and rhythms from many different cultures\, Chouki combines classical guitar with instruments such as the loutar\, a traditional instrument of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco; the sintir\, a Sub-Saharan instrument from the Sahel region (Mali); the oud\, an oriental lute; the Algerian mandole\, a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin; the Bağlama saz\, a Turkish long necked bowl-lute; the banjo\, and a variety of percussion instruments. In many art books\, they’ve been marginalized with cold efficiency\, summarily dismissed in the captions of group photographs with the phrase “identity unknown” while each male is named. \nDonna Seaman brings to dazzling life seven of these forgotten artists\, among the best of their day: Gertrude Abercrombie\, with her dark\, surreal paintings and friendships with Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins; Bay Area self-portraitist Joan Brown; Ree Morton\, with her witty\, oddly beautiful constructions; Loïs Mailou Jones of the Harlem Renaissance; Lenore Tawney\, who combined weaving and sculpture when art and craft were considered mutually exclusive; Christina Ramberg\, whose unsettling works drew on pop culture and advertising; and Louise Nevelson\, an art-world superstar in her heyday but omitted from recent surveys of her era. \nThese women fought to be treated the same as male artists\, to be judged by their work\, not their gender or appearance. DESCRIPTION:The NOMA Book Club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in NOMA’s collection and exhibitions. It is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to join. \nBook selections are inspired by the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copies. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. But only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. They’re the guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits\, keeping a watchful eye on the two million square foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamorous fledgling career at The New Yorker\, Patrick Bringley never thought he’d be one of them. Then his older brother was diagnosed with fatal cancer and he found himself needing to escape the mundane clamor of daily life. So he quit The New Yorker and sought solace in the most beautiful place he knew. \nTo his surprise and the reader’s delight\, this temporary refuge becomes Bringley’s home away from home for a decade. Born in New Orleans\, he studied Philosophy at the University of Dallas\, and he holds an MA in Philosophy from Holy Apostles College and an MPhil in Creative Writing from Trinity College Dublin. His translation of the Divine Comedy was published in 2021 for the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death. His poetry and essays have appeared in places like Dappled Things\, New Oxford Review\, and Ocean State Review. He is the editor of Joie de Vivre\, a journal of art\, culture\, and letters for South Louisiana\, and he teaches English at Jesuit High School in New Orleans.

When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the front desk for directions to the appropriate gallery. \nGET TICKETS \nTo book your ticket in advance\, click the link above and select the day for the gallery talk you’d like to attend. \n\nAbout Joseph Darensbourg\nJoseph is a native of Bulbancha (Choctaw for “place of many tongues\,” aka New Orleans) from the Faubourg Treme\, the oldest free people of color neighborhood in the country (predating the US itself). This neighborhood of Gens de Couleur Libres is a tri-racial ethnic blend comprised of Native Americans\, Europeans\, and African ethnic Creoles who speak a lingua franca known as Kouri Vini as well as Colonial Louisiana French. \nA performer of ethnic folk musics\, Joseph is a singer\, violinist\, and percussionist member of Les Cenelles ensemble\, which specializes in music inspired by resistance and protest poetry and Les Cenelles Gens de Couleur Libres\, civil rights activists opposing the Code Noir during US Reconstruction. Joseph focuses on the Bayou Ballads plantation songs (1840s–80s). \nA bookbinder by trade—trained at the oldest bookbindery in the US (Harcourt\, Boston)—Joseph is also a visual art alum of NOCCA\, as well as a member of the oldest early music ensemble in the America\, New Orleans Musica da Camera (founded in 1965\, as was Joseph).

DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Art Thrives initiative and the Congo Square Preservation Society present the Elders Sacred Talk Series with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while learning firsthand about the impact they’ve had on the city. \nOn November 1\, 5:30 pm\, in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts\, the program will highlight Civil Rights activists Ronnie Moore and Doratha “Dodie” Smith Simmons. Doors open at 5 pm. \nFree with museum admission. Louisiana residents receive free admission to NOMA on Wednesdays courtesy of The Helis Foundation. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the Lapis Center for the Arts. \nPlan Your Visit \nTo book your ticket in advance\, click the link above. \n\nAbout the Speakers\n\nRonnie Moore\nRonnie Moore is a veteran civil rights activist\, community developer\, and photographer. At the age of 15\, he and his peers attempted to integrate a public park in his hometown of New Orleans. In 1961\, while a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, he led a group of 2\,500 students to the state capitol to protest the city's hiring policies and segregated lunch counters. That activism led to his arrest and expulsion from the university and prompted his full-time commitment to CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality). Moore worked as a field secretary for CORE from 1961 to 1965\, which included establishing voter registration initiatives in parts of Louisiana. From 1965 – 1973\, he worked as the executive director of the Scholarship\, Education and Defense Fund for Racial Equality\, Inc. Moore also served as the director of the Institute for Resident Initiatives at Tulane University from 1996 to 2005 and the director of the African American Youth Congress from 1982 to 1994. During his lifetime of activism\, Moore was arrested over 17 times and held in solitary confinement for 56 days for advocating for voting rights in Louisiana. \n\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons\nDoratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons joined New Orleans chapter of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) in 1961 when she was 14 or 15 years old. It was one of the most active chapters in the region and she became a very active member participating in sit-ins and picketing. Her participation resulted in police arresting her several times. Her dedication led her to become a Freedom Rider and test the law that made segregation on public buses unconstitutional. She and other members of the New Orleans CORE rode a bus from New Orleans to McComb\, MS where they were met with severe violence and some of them suffered life-threatening injuries. “After the rides\, Smith-Simmons trained freedom riders and taught members how to participate in nonviolent protests. In the ‘60s\, she also worked to integrate hotels and Florida beaches and participated in the March on Washington. \n\nAbout Congo Square Preservation Society\nThe Congo Square Preservation Society serves as a continuing catalyst in the resurrection and continuation of activities\, advocacy\, and preservation of historic and sacred Congo Square in New Orleans.
